Call for Papers An international conference on "Russian-Jewish New York" April 4-6, 2006. The organizers of the conference are the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian and East European History and Culture (Columbia University), International Center for Russian and East-European Jewish Studies (Moscow), the Harriman Institute (Columbia University), and The New York Public Library. By the beginning of the 20th century, New York had become the largest Jewish community in the world. One hundred years later, it remains so. The vast majority of its Jews are descendants of immigrants from the Russian Empire or people who came from the Soviet Union and the territories of the former USSR. For many decades, Yiddish was their main means of self-expression, as Russian has been for a later generation. The conference will focus on questions raised by the phenomenon of Russian-Jewish New York, from the time of its coming into existence in the late 19th century until the present. Among anticipated topics are: problems of immigrant adaptation and everyday life; the development of a new identity; artistic and journalistic activity in Russian and Yiddish; participation in politics, etc. Those wishing to take part are invited to submit a proposal-a short abstract of the paper in Russian or English (not longer than one page), CV, and a list of major publications-not later than November 1, 2005. You will be notified of our decision by December 1, 2005. Proposals can be sent electronically to: E.A. Zabolotskaia. [EMAIL PROTECTED] and Tanya Chebotarev [EMAIL PROTECTED], or mailed to: International Center for Russian and East-European Jewish Studies, Krasin Pereulok 15/1, Suite 19, 123056 Moscow. The expenses of participants from the Russian Federation (visa, airfare, room and board during the duration of the conference) will be covered by the conference organizers.
