Re: [ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's book

2006-12-21 Thread Andrea Rapp
Aside from the comments and citations given, there were also the
statements of American negotiator Dennis Ross. Ross takes Carter to
task on a number of issues. For example, Carter apparently wrote that
Ehud Barak rejected Clinton's peace plan. Ross said that not only
did Barak accept the Clinton plan, but the Israeli cabinet actually
voted and approved it. This is a matter of record. As Ross said in
a TV interview, Carter is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his
own facts, and he got the facts wrong, and should retract them.
It would certainly be nice if President Clinton would also speak
up (or has he?) to correct Carter's errors.

[ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's Book

2006-12-21 Thread Eli Wise
Jimmy Carter’s book and it relevance goes beyond the normal
collection development criteria. Since it has been argued that many
facts are incorrect and his subsequent interviews give us a loud and
clear message where he stands why purchase it. If someone wants to
read the book I am sure that there are public libraries that provide
it in their collections. If your library has a policy to collect all
types of overt and alluded to Antisemitica then I suppose the book
should be purchased. Otherwise a Judaica library should provide
different points of view but Carter’s book has a purpose and an
agenda. Would a library buy a book on Jewish history by David Duke,
the president of Iran or the likes? Perhaps not, but just because
someone was President of United States does not automatically require
purchase. I would advise to spend your money on materials that
reflect the needs of your public which is the primary responsibility
and materials that present viewpoints without the hate, venom, and agenda.

I wouldn't worry about your congregants who want to read Carter's
book. Keep in mind that as a book written by an former president of
the United States, it will be available in every public library and
your patrons will have no trouble getting it. As a librarian in a
Jewish library, given its inaccuracies and anti-Israel bias, I
wouldn't waste my money on it and increase Carter's profits.

[ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's book

2006-12-20 Thread David Elazar
Whether I would purchase the book or not depends on my libraries budget and
acquisition policy. I would not use a limited budget on this book which
contains many inacuracies and is basicly anti-Israel.

Should one decide to include the book his/her collection, I recommend that
your patrons be made aware of the following responses and reviews:

Misinformation in In Jimmy Carter’s New Book

http://www.standwithus.com/pdfs/flyers/Carter_Responses.pdf

1) “The World According to Jimmy Carter,”by Alan Dershowitz
2) “Jimmy Carter’ Calumny: A review of ‘Palestine Peace Not Apartheid’”
Review by Mitchell Bard
3)Letter of Resignation of Dr. Kenneth Stein from the Carter Center
4) “Jimmy Carter’ Disingenuous Diplomacy,” by Rick Richman

In any case, I would encourage all my patrons to read the above, with or
without the book, especially the letter of Dr. Stein.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's book

2006-12-20 Thread Ellen Zyroff
I would use the same collection development criteria you use for
other books purchased for your library's collection. If a
non-fiction book is known to be filled with factual errors (as this
one is), then it is a disservice for a librarian on whom library
users are relying, to purchase it and add to the collection as a
non-fiction book.

[ha-Safran]: Jimmy Carter's book

2006-12-19 Thread Lori Amchin
I was wondering whether synagogue libraries are planning to purchase
Jimmy Carter's new book, Palestine Peace Not Apartheid. I have read
an email written by Alan Dershowitz which refutes and criticizes the
book, and that leads me to not purchasing it. On the other hand,
there are congregants who might want to read it for themselves. I
would appreciate your opinions. Thank you!
