RE: [ha-Safran]: Judaica librarianship - Classes

2009-11-16 Thread Vanessa Freedman
An online course sounds like a great idea, especially if modules could be
taken for continuing professional development, not just for credit towards a
degree.

We have discussed both possibilities. Would anyone be interested in
working with the Education Committee and Yelena Luckert who is
researching the programs available out there?

Wouldn't an accredited ONLINE course make a lot more sense, perhaps even
two or three courses (cataloging and reference, or perhaps different
courses relevant to Israeli materials, Rabinicial materials,
etc.). There already is a well established program for distance education
in library science.

[ha-Safran]: Judaica librarianship - Classes

2009-11-03 Thread Nancy Poole
Greetings safranim,

This topic has come up before (I've been looking through the
archives), but there are some of us fairly new to the organization
and list serve. SO - if you could help us out, that would be much appreciated.

First are you aware of any classes in librarianship for Jewish
libraries? I mean, at colleges or universities, either online or in
classrooms. Not ceus - for example - as AJL does every year. COuld
be a full progrqm or just some courses toward a certificate or
specialization within another degree - but the main element must be
librarianship as related to Judaica/Jewish llibraries.

I've tried to look at the Israeli universities - but, alas, my
knowledge of Hebrew makes the going very slow. Bar Ilan, JNUL, and I
think Hebrew University are supposed to have library programs.

In the states, I noticed Yelena had one started or in the process a
few years back at U Maryland, there was also mention at Gratz, but it
seems that those programs are no longer around. I have looked at all
the ALA programs and have not seen a single course relevant to Jewish
librarians (in terms of special issues).

Is anyone aware of any offering elsewhere - or that I may have missed?

Secondly, how willing would you be to take such classes if offered online?

Thanks
