However, this activity should be in addition to required readings that the school or teachers decide should be read. If the students don't have some novels in their common background they will be missing experiences that they need in college and later. Our language is based on understanding of the literature of the previous generations. But your project wasn't: Read anything at all you want, it was: choose from these offerings. The offerings probably didn't include Captain Underpants type of books. Anyway, I'll bet I'm not the only one wondering what college it was that rejected students because their high school didn't require Silas Marner. Weird! In my opinio nitis a very bad idea. Literature, at its best, can elevate the spirit. I doubt the typical seventh and eight gradr will siply stumble upon such literature.
