[ha-Safran]: Old children's books

2011-10-14 Thread ritaallen08
Some time ago I remember reading that someone was developing a
collection of old childrens' books. I have several that I would like
to add to this collection. Please let me know who is involved in this
project. Thank you.

[ha-Safran]: old children's books

2010-08-10 Thread ritaallen08
Re U of AZ at Tempe:

When we were preparing to move from Trenton NJ to Pennington NJ &
had, literally, a closet full of books we didn't want to keep, I put
out some feelers for this. Boxes went to Harvard, San Diego State, &
U of AZ at Tempe. This man Zipperstein left them something like
10,000 books, & I sent them some more. Later I was in Phoenix for an
Elderhostel program & walked over to the U & met Rachel leKet Mor (I
think I got her name right). Beyond fascinating. Cataloging &
classifying these books will occupy this lady for the rest of her
life. Seems like an unusual place for a collection of Judaica, but there it is.

...and we mustn't forget Spain. Anyone who has baby, infant or youngster
books in
spanish or hebrew (with the dots and dashes) is welcome to send them across to
overly sunny Valencia any time the thought occurs.

[ha-Safran]: Old children's books

2004-08-22 Thread Fredisaac
Safranim --

I want to weigh on this before it gets by.

Those who want to clear their overloaded shelves of books that are no
longer used, have old-style illustrations, and outdated information should
certainly feel free to do so. I highly recommend that criteria and
policies be established to explain the reasons for this move by the Librarian.

In addition, there are synagogues and schools elsewhere that don't have any
books, and whose staffs would love to have them. These include
institutions in the FSU and Eastern Europe, where Jewish culture is still
in the early stages of revival and development.

As the consultant for the regeneration of Bnai Israel in Sacramento after
its fire in 1999, Poshi Mikalson and I went through (literally) hundreds of
boxes of books that were no longer needed or wanted by wonderful AJL member
libraries. While we did not accept all of these donations, many of them
had been in the old library. We accepted a large number of them gratefully.

So while you may think a book has outlived its useful life, take another
look. No, don't worry about tossing books that are in tatters, or have
ugly, brown pages. But many of them can serve a second, very useful life
if we take some time and effort.
