Ben Shahn did illustrate The Alphabet of Creation, a story from the Zohar about how G-d chose the letter Bet to begin creation (B'reshis). Perhaps that's what your patron remembered. An open message to Yossi Galron: All of the answers to my question advised me that Ben Shahn never illustrated Pirke Avot but Saul Raskin did.
