[ha-Safran]: Subject heading (WAS Re: Children's holocaust
Dear Steve and Colleagues, Applicable LCSH headings may include: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Fiction. [Name of Individual Person]--Fiction. LCSH also has a form heading, "Biographical fiction" (for collections and criticial works). "Biographical fiction" is also a heading in ALA's Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc. > I looked up Blake Eskin's book on Wilkomirski, and LC > uses 'Literary > forgeries and mystifications' along with > 'Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945), > in literature'. Does that do it? For the book ABOUT Wilkomirski & his book, yes. But > Meanwhile, Wilkomirski's book, Fragments, has the > Fiction subheading. > It's an interesting question ... Indeed. I don't mean to split hairs - and I have much respect for the hard-working classifiers at LCSH - but using the heading "HOLOCAUST, JEWISH, 1939-1945 -- FICTION" doesn't let the reader know that the work was a fiction intended to be passed off as non-fiction. I think that's an important point. I think "Literary forgeries and mystifications" would be a more apt subdivision or subject heading to be used along with HOLOCAUST, JEWISH, 1939-1945. Just my 2 cents. Re: [ha-Safran]: Subject heading
Dear Margot, I encourage you to go consider establishing the "disengagement" from Gaza as a subject heading as Aaron suggests. If your institution is not an independent PCC member and thus not a member of SACO, may I recommend that your institution join the Judaica SACO Funnel. We would welcome the contributions from the Simon Wiesenthal Center of which I am sure that there could be potentially many unique and important subject heading contributions from which we could all benefit and use. If you do consider joining the funnel please feel free to contact me and I can outline the steps for you. You can also take a look at the SACO website at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/saco.html. Re: [ha-Safran]: Subject heading
I would suggest establishing the "disengagement" from Gaza in LCSH as a subject heading. LC has had only a handful of books solely on it, and the catalogers have managed to use a "shotgun" approach (many headings around the point, but none really on target). A pattern is the usage of the military science heading for "disengagement" at some point in the array. If unwilling or unable to create a heading in LCSH, I'ld suggest a local alternative heading (653 in LC, often a 690 elsewhere). --Aaron Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

I'm cataloging a work on the Israeli disengagement from Gaza, and I'm working on the subject headings. Michael Sokoloff also wrote the foreword for _Dikduk ha-Aramit ha-Gelilit li-´sefat ha-Talmud ha-Yerushalmi veha-midrashim_ (A grammar of Galilean Aramaic), which was assigned the subject heading ARAMAIC LANGUAGE--DIALECTS--PALESTINE. Shalom to all. Yesterday we found something very interesting in the catalog of the Library of Congress. We searched for the book A Dictionary of Judean Aramaic, by Michael Sokoloff. I would recommend that you look at the subject heading they gave.
