[ha-Safran]: Thank you for articles

2011-03-05 Thread Ulric, Karen
A huge thank you to everyone who sent me the articles I requested a
couple of weeks ago. I was able to get them to my Head of School
despite having limited internet access in Israel, and it was a huge
help and brownie points for me!

Israel was amazing – it was a very odd first-timers trip because
of the intensity and focus of the trip as a teacher's mission, but I
definitely got a lot out of it.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Thank you for suggestions of Paris libraries

2011-02-14 Thread Emily Bergman
Two people asked me to report on my Paris library visits. They have
been more wonderful than I could have imagined. First, let me say
that they all share a common catalog, using Aleph from Ex Libris
called Rachel:http://www.rachelnet.net/rachelnet/index.htm. You can
search their catalogs and link to the individual Websites from Rachel.

1. Centre Francais de Musique Juives. They have both sound
recordings and scores, some of which are manuscripts, as well as some
archival materials. The sound recordings are being digitized, and
you can listen to examples of all the tracks online, limited by
copyright. As some go into the public domain, the entire recording
can be made available. They just got an overhead scanner, and I
think they will now scan and make available the some of the scores
and archival material.

2. Bibliotheque de l'Alliance Israelite Universelle. They have an
extraordinary library, mostly for researchers. Begun in 1860, the
Alliance has the weekly reports from the Jewish schools they
supported around the world. That archive must be a true treasure
trove of information about Jewish communities over the last century
and a half. They obviously have an extraordinary collection of books
and journals, but the manuscript collection amazed me. I saw several
wonderful pieces, but two in particular--an illuminated Chumash that
not surprisingly gives a history of its time and place through the
images, and a leaf of Maimonides in his handwriting. I got to hold
it (encased in mylar, of course). It's in Arabic, written in Hebrew
letters. I honestly don't know what it says, but just holding a leaf
in his handwriting was probably the most moving bibliographic thing
I've ever done, even with all my years of when I was a rare book
curator and even now visiting antiquarian book fairs. I spent over
two hours there and had lunch with the librarians that included a
lively conversation about libraries and where we're all headed.

3. Paris Yiddish Center- Medem Library. The collection has books,
journals, sound recordings, films, etc. not only in Yiddish but about
Ashkenazi Judaism in all languages. They just moved to a new space
with more storage. I can't read Yiddish and haven't spoken it in 35
years, but I did my best and enjoyed the exhibit the librarian,
Natalia Krynicka, developed.

4. La Mediateque Musee d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaisme. The
librarian, Isabelle Pleskoff-Berkowitz, has been there since the
beginning of the library, so it was very interesting to hear the
history of the collection and the library's programming. The art
books seem to be the most used, but there are obviously books on
history, ritual, philosophy, etc. as well as some film and sound
recordings. It is open to the public, not just the curators, which I
found delightful, since we had very few outside users when I worked
in a museum library. I had visited the museum on the Sunday before
with my husband, and we noticed that the library was open, and anyone
could go in. The topics of the library's programs are quite
interesting, including Jews in Lebanon, Yiddish marionette theater, a
chazan from Morocco, and a Marrano from Spain who rediscovered his
Judaism and converted. They all speak for free--I often have to pay
speakers quite a hefty honorarium, so I was happy to hear she
doesn't. The museum has quite a collection of books (some wonderful
incunabula and early printed books) and manuscripts on exhibit, but
they are on loan, as the library does not have a rare book
collection. She said the Biblioteque Nationale has a collection, but
they don't lend.

As you can tell, everyone was very generous with their time, and I
learned a great deal in my visits. People asked why I would be
visiting libraries during my vacation, but what could be a greater
pleasure for a librarian, and they are all in different parts of
Paris, so I got to see areas I might not have visited. For more
information about the libraries, go to Rachel; it's worth a visit.

2010-04-14 Thread Rebecca Wolk
Hi All,

Thank you for all of your responses to my post. After so many
rejections from area synagogues and libraries, it was good to hear
that these books were valued somewhere. I have already given away
about a dozen cartons of books, but there are still many left. Some
of these seem to have value. Are there any booksellers who would
take a look at these items and offer a donation to the shul in
exchange for these books? I would also prefer if they were picked
up, so it would be better to give them away to someone in the NY/NJ area.

Thank you,

Rebecca

Subject: Thank you

Dear Jewish Librarians - Todah Rabah - THANK YOU for your
support. Today the New York Board of Rabbis is sending off 7 cases
of Jewish books into the New York State Corrections system provided
by different libraries. These books are being added to prison
libraries throughout New York State for the benefit of inmates - both
Jewish and non-Jewish. The books range from novels with Jewish
themes to basic information on Judaism to even one on needle pointing
Jewish themes.

We have chaplains serving close to 75 correctional facilities. The
NYBR works closely with our chaplains, helping them meet the needs of
over 3,000 registered Jewish inmates within these facilities. If you
have duplicate or no longer needed Jewish themed books in "like new"
condition that you can donate to be sent into NYS prison libraries,
we would be glad to pay the UPS postage to receive them. We can
always use Chumashim/Bibles. Finally, if you have Jewish educational
materials appropriate for a prison library in LIKE NEW condition,
such as Hebrew/English Talmud sets, commentary sets, etc., please
feel free to contact us about donating these as well.

Again, thanks for the support you as a group have provided up to
now. In advance, thanks for your continued support.

[ha-Safran]: Thank You for Convention

2006-07-05 Thread Susan Dubin
I would like to thank everybody that was involved in organizing the
convention in Cambridge, Mass. It was a very interesting conference, the

sessions were informative, and presented in a most professional way.
Meeting
with other librarians and sharing the problems we encounter on a daily
basis
was comforting and helpful, and as I mentioned to you before, I'm an AJL

member for the past 14 years, and yet, this was the first convention
that I
participated in full. My previous work place, elementary Jewish
day-school,
didn't believe in librarian's professional development, and since I
couldn't
get Avi-Chai financial support, I couldn't attend any convention unless
it
was taking place in town (Toronto), and then only for one day. This year
I
started working in CHAT Richmond Hill high-school (Community Hebrew
Academy
of Toronto, Richmond Hill branch), where the Administration has quite a
different view regarding library work, and librarian professional
development, but most important - since this is a high-school, I could
receive Avi-Chai support to attend the convention. Overall, the
experience
of the convention was very positive, and I returned home with many
helpful
tools and information, which will help me better the library collection
and
services, and support the students and staff in their needs. I hope that

Avi-Chai will continue with its generous support of librarians and
Jewish
libraries to the benefit of all that are involved in Jewish education.

Thank you again and Yeshar Koah to all of you,

Esti Bega, Librarian
CHAT Richmond Hill

[ha-Safran]: Thank you for lots of questions about EZbook

2006-06-08 Thread Hilary Gilmore
Dear Librarian

Last week I wrote to you and several other librarians introducing
EZbook.com, our web-based reservation service for libraries. I was
delighted at the interest shown since we are all enthusiasts, and
want to answer some questions asked.

a.Pricing? - EZbook costs just $399 / year for each 10 resources.

(For example, 2 meeting rooms, 4 computers and 1 data
projector = 7 resources).

b.Is there a cost relating to the number of users? You may have
as many users as you like with no extra cost.

c.How does one get started? You send me a list of, say, 3 or 4
of your library's resources and I will create a sample EZbook site at
no charge. You can use this site for managing these resources for 30
days without any obligation. We will give you all the guidance you
need. Simply mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

d.Who are EZbook? EZbook is a product of Korbitec, a leading
software development company with a 30 year history of excellent
products. EZbook.com has been in business for over 6 years and has
nearly 10 000 users. More at www.Korbitec.com

e.Why is EZbook web-based? Benefits of being "web-based"
include: lowest cost, access from anywhere, easily implemented
enhancements, automatic backups.

For convenient reference I am attaching my earlier letter below.

Kind regards

Hilary Gilmore

Our system, http://www.ezbook.com/>EZbook.com,
provides a simple way of managing your meeting rooms, PCs and other
shared equipment. EZbook eliminates the problem of double-booking
and is used by hundreds of libraries, universities, schools,
laboratories and in other situations where a paper diary was previously used.

EZbook.com is a web-based system costing just $399 per year for each
10 facilities, and an unlimited number of users.

I would be pleased to set up a site specifically for you, and to show
you how it is used.

The easiest way of moving forward with EZbook is for me to show you
how Silwood Library are using it for the management of their meeting
rooms, PC's and audiovisual equipment. I'd be happy to phone you and
to take you to their EZbook site and show you how they use it.

To see Silwood's EZbook reservation site please reply to me with a
convenient time I may call you, or alternatively you may visit their
site in your own time by going to

I am confident that you will find EZbook useful.

be with other people who want to advance the cause of
Judaica Librarianship!

I have one more cataloging question. Since all of you
were of great assistance to me with my last question,
I'd appreciate another helpful response! The
synagogue library that I am helping out with is now
taking fruition, but we've run into a problem. How do
you catalog Jewish prayer books/siddurim with the
Dewey system? Where do they go under in the 200
section? What if we have different types of siddurim
like Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox? It seems like
a monumental but possible task.

[ha-Safran]: Thank you Rachel Kamin

2005-05-17 Thread Reister, Maureen
I want to thank Rachel Kamin for the thoughtful, well-researched article
which she wrote for School Library Journal (SLJ May 2005, "Middle East
Muddle?: A reader challenges some Rosen titles" pg. 13). It is difficult
to be on your toes about every title you consider for purchase, and it is
easy to rely on reviews by SLJ, Booklist, Kirkus, etc. Many librarians
(and teachers) are unassuming about inconsistencies (or sloppy research) in
books that are published by reputable houses. I try to be careful, but I
was looking for books specifically on the Yom Kippur War and didn't look
further than the SLJ review and the reputation of Rosen Publishing when I
purchased Aaron Rosenberg's Yom Kippur War for my own library. Rachel's
article is a valuable reminder for all and I am so happy that SLJ published
it for all to see!

P.S. There were many times I found multiple favorable reviews for a title,
then read a review by an AJL member in the AJL Newsletter that made me look
twice.

With gratitude for and pride in AJL and member librarians,

Maureen

Dear all,
I would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who responded so
quickly to my question on library planning.
We all really appreciate the effort here at Solomon Schechter Academy in
Montreal. I'm confident we'll be able to create a beautiful and functional
new library.
Thanks,
