[ha-Safran]: From Here to Obscurity
Henry Hollander, Bookseller has taken over the retail and wholesale distribution for North America of "From Here to Obscurity: A Novel," by Yoel Sherman. Orders should be sent to us directly for the time being. From the cover copy: 'From Here to Obscurity' tells the story of the now lost Jewish East End of London through the eyes of Shulem, an immigrant from Poland, his wife Rivka, and Yulus, their EWnglish born youngest son. It takes us through the turbulent years in London from 1933 to 1945, through poverty, fascist incursions, evacuation and targeted war-time bombings by Hitler's luftwaffe that destroyed the infrastructure of this one time thriving East London Yiddish-speaking community, forcing its ultimate dispersion. Shulem's relatives are lost in the Holocaust and many of Yulu's friends are killed by the last German V-2 rocket to fall on London. Despite all this trauma, 'From Here to Obscurity' is an uplifting tale of human warmth, humour and solidarity in the midst of overwhelming global forces. Paperbound. ISBN 0-9540811-0-2. Re: [ha-Safran]: From Here to Obscurity
I wonder about the propriety of postings that not only alert us to the publication of a new book which may be of interest to many of us, but also reach forward considerably towards undue self-promotion by giving a second "alert" with full information, when only a simple correction would have been enough. Further, I am not pleased to see excerpts from a review with elipses in the text -- indicating that something was left out. It's not too 'kosher' to do that -- better to have merely given us the URL for the review or only the simple citation, and left it at that! B'shalom, Bernard Katz, former Head, Special Collections and Library Development McLaughlin Library, University of Guelph and founding Treasurer, AJL - Ontario Chapter From the Moderator: I agree, it was my mistake. 2 or 3 days ago Mr. Sheridan posted the same message and I shortened the original posting by deleting the "book reviews" and the self-promotion parts. I will try to be more attentive next time. From Here to Obscurity
When I wrote that my book "From Here to Obscurity" (ISBN 0-9540811-0-2) was now available in the USA from McBooks, 4450 Poe Road, Medina, OH 44256 USA Phone: 330-725-0402 Fax: 330-722-2439, I inadvertently omitted their e mail address which is [EMAIL PROTECTED] The book, which is about the life and times and demise of the Yiddish-speaking Jews of the East End of London in the period 1933 to 1945, has universal appeal as indicated in the review that appeared in the Jerusalem Post under the heading "A London Jewish world that is no more by Alexander Zvielli." "This is a well-executed historical novel about London's Jewish East End, covering the 1933-1945 period..Sheridan is successful in portraying the character types that we could just as easily find in Lodz or the Lower East Side of New York... From Here to Obscurity is a historically perceptive and exciting chronicle that gives us a moving fusion of history and literature. Local author Yoel Sheridan does a good job of bringing us the ambiance, lifestyle and nostalgic humor of London's East End. Indeed, I found the historical descriptions absorbing." I would like you all to know that my book "From Here to Obscurity" is now available in the USA from McBooks, 4450 Poe Road, Medina, OH 44256 USA Phone: 330-725-0402 Fax: 330-722-2439 The book deals with the now lost Yiddish-speaking 100,000 strong Jewish community of the East End of London, England, in the period 1933 to 1945. It is not widely known that this vibrant Jewish community was not outside the orbit of Nazi terror and that it was forced to disperse by the targeted bombing of the German Luftwaffe in WW2. The book has received excellent reviews from the Jewish press in England, Israel and New Zealand.
