RE: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?
My thanks to Marion Stein for her message (attached) and for her permission to send it on to the list since I know there are those on the list interested in the responses I have been receiving. Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2007 17:16:17 -0500 From: Marion Stein [EMAIL PROTECTED] We are keeping it for sure. The 1972 has so much richness that is totally missing from the new edition. NO PICTURES TO SPEAK OF, for one thing. Marion Stein , Librarian A J Heschel HS. Re: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?
Although we are a different kind of library (community library located at a JCC), I decided to keep the old edition of EJ on the shelf next to the new for 2 reasons: 1. Pictures -- the new edition seems lacking in illustrations 2. The Hundred Year Calendar -- although this is easily available online, many patrons are used to reaching for the old EJ index volume for this info Elizabeth Edelglass, Library Director Dept. of Jewish Education of Greater New Haven [EMAIL PROTECTED] Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
Re: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?
Henry Hollander is right about errors. For instance, they couldn't even get the index comprehensive - in these days of computers! They have often, quite legitimately, retained an article from the 1972 edition , but had someone revise it, and at the bottom attributed it to both the original author, as well as the reviser, thus: [A.Cohen/B.Levy (2nd ed)]. It's therefore unclear whose views are being expressed at any particular point. This is a careless thing to do. I know of a case where the reviser's views were inserted within the text written by the 1972 author's views, yet which were diametrically opposed to those of the 1972 author! Who could tell, unless he/she knew the subject? Production is not as handsome as the 1972 edition. Also, no pictures (except centerfold). Good reasons to retain the old edition. Re: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?
1) The new EJ was rushed to publication and contains many errors. I am sure that there will be plenty of errata and corrigenda forthcoming, but I would keep the 1972 EJ at the very least to check up on the new version. 2) Would the arrival of the new version of the EJ cause you to discard the Jewish Encyclopedia or the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia. RE: [ha-Safran]: 1972 Encyclopaedia Judaica: to keep or to withdraw?
Dear Schmuel, Here at the HUC-JIR Klau Library, Cincinnati, we plan to keep the 1972 edition of the EJ in Reference, amidst the many other older encyclopedias, including the 1901 JE. However, I expect that most of our users will access the EJ2 in its online format. Be well, David David J.
