RE: [ha-Safran]: Good challenge - Finnish Jewish composer

2005-02-15 Thread Miller, Philip
It would have been remarkable for a Jew to live in Finland in the 17-18th
century as Finland at that time was a province of Sweden, and Jews were
precluded from living there. Jews only established a presence there in the
mid-19th century, and even then had to petition the Tsarist government for
permission.

I'd love to be wrong, and if anyone knows better, please correct me!

Phil Miller

Maybe the name you want is Moses Pergament, but the time frame is
off. The Grove Dictionary gives his dates as (b Helsinki, 21 Sept 1893; d
Gustavsberg, nr Stockholm, 5 March 1977).

Grove says: ...some of his most important works treat Jewish themes and
are partly influenced by Hebrew cantillation. Den judiska sången (1944) is
a central work, and the orchestral Rapsodia ebraica, written in protest at
the massacres under the Nazis and parodying Deutschland über alles, is
another Jewish-inspired piece.
