[ha-Safran] Doctorate on Kabbalah Messianism and Israel for sale

2012-04-03 Thread Genizah Society

For Sale:
Doctorate : THE 'SULAM'  JOURNAL
BETWEEN POETRY AND POLITICS By Dr Baruch Falach,  310 pages
in Hebrew including 8 pages in color.
This
doctorate reveals an underlying Messianic stream in the Brit
Biryonim (Covenant of Hero's) which later became the Etzel movement.
The Messianic idea was especially potent in the ideology of Yair
Stern, and that of Israel Eldad of the Lechi, and in the Sulam
Journal which he edited; as well as in the Jewish underground
movement whose mission it was to get the British out of Palestine.
The
research reveals that this was a coherent messianic stream which
started in 1930 and continued well into the 1980's in terms of
ideology as well as action. This stream included 5 underground
movements and 4 ideologies. In this research the author reveals for
the first time the connection between these ideologies and their
Messianic roots based on certain eminent Messianic and Mystical
personalities whose thoughts in Jewish philosophy throughout history
were based upon the Kabbalah and especially the  Sefer HaZohar.

Subject: [ha-Safran] small library needing software?
Our religious school has a small library of about 300 books. Nothing is in
electronic format. Our circulation is small & I don't expect it
to grow much. I'd like to have a list of our books that I can manipulate, sort,
etc. but I'm not sure what is best for a library of our size. I want something
easy to use. Maybe we'll eventually use software for circulation, but that's a
ways off. BookThing, Readerware, & LibrarySoft have been suggested. I'm not
sure what criteria to use to evaluate these systems. I'm not a librarian. Any
suggestions? Thank you. Allyson

HISPANIA JUDAICA is a product of many years of work by leading scholars of
The Dinur Center for Research in Jewish History at The Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. This series of monographs founded by Prof. Haim Beinart and
originally published by The Magnes Press, has been now been issued in
electronic format by Varda Books.

The monographs contain the archival material from Spain and Portugal
designed to methodically cover all regions of the Sefarad. A representative
number of communities, major events and various aspects in Judeo-Spanish
history and biographies of personalities who played a major role in the life
of Hispano-Jewish society are described anew and historically evaluated. The
collected material aims to provide primary sources for historians.

"The reconstruction of the history of the Jews during the Middle Ages has
come to emphasize increasingly the utilization of archival materials that
permit a closer look at the economic and social realities of Jewish life...
The Hispania Judaica series... has distinguished itself through the
presentation of a series of close studies of medieval Spanish Jewish
communities."
--Robert Chazan
New York University

The aim of the Series is the publication of monographs and documentary
collections on the history of the Jews in the Iberian peninsula from the
earliest times until the end of the Middle Ages.

". . . a rich mine of information for the researcher and all who are
interested in Jewish life in medieval Spain."
--Ruth Rigbi
Israel Genealogical Society

Scholars from various countries take part in the preparation of books, in
which archival material from Spain and Portugal is collected and evaluated
under the editorial supervision of Hispania Judaica. It is designed to cover
methodically all regions of Sepharad. A representative number of
communities, major events and various aspects in Judeo-Spanish history and
biographies of personalities who played a major role in the life of
Hispano-Jewish society are described anew and historically evaluated. These
monographs are to serve the future historians of Iberian Jewry.

"[Two Portuguese Exiles in Castile is] a brilliant investigation...
Lipiner's contribution to the study of the history of Jews and "conversos"
in Portugal and Brazil is inestimable innovative approach, elegance of
literary style, and meticulous care in researching sources."
--Inazio Steinhardt
Shofar, Book Review

Issued in eminently convenient electronic format by Varda Books, each volume
of this collection--all books of the series published to date--has been
indexed separately to enable a scholar to search and find what he or she is

proper documents regardless of their pages, to make finding them very easy
. Searchable individually or collectively in a great variety of ways
. Printing and copying are unrestricted (for personal use only)
. Infinitively expandable
. Can be installed on up to three library computers

[ha-Safran] Lovely article on the benefits of mentoring

Let's hear from you, now. I'm suggesting that seasoned mentors (as well as
those in library school) post your favorite articles on mentoring, emerging
librarianship and EdTech (RAS as well as SSC). Perhaps we can begin a
conversation and then catch up face-to-face at convention.

[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award

2012-04-03 Thread Aileen Grossberg
The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Competition Committee has been deliberating
for some days and has finally reached a decision about the 2012 award. The
Committee felt that, while the crop of manuscripts was interesting and each had
some merit, none adequately met the competition's criteria. Consequently, no
award will be given this year.

However, 4 manuscripts were selected as Manuscripts of Merit. Each author will
receive a certificate and the titles will be listed on the website.

Look for more details about the manuscripts, the authors and the process in the
next AJL Newsletter.

[ha-Safran] Literary suggestions?

2012-04-03 Thread Rose Novil

Hi Everyone,

Chag Sameach! For the past 5 years, our institution has been organizing
"Let's Talk about it"--Jewish Literature readings and discussions
focusing on various themes. For example, this year's theme has been
Fathers and Daughters in a Changing World and the five books we are
reading are: /Tevye the Dairiyman (/Sholem Aleichem), /Bread Giver/s
(Yezierska), /1185 Park Avenue: A Memoir/ (Roiphe), /American Pastoral/
(Roth), and/Bee Season/ (Goldberg).

I am writing to ask your collective wisdom about suggestions for other
Jewish literary themes and some titles of books, especially novels that
spotlight the theme and that you consider good reading. One theme we
are seriously considering is the theme of "*Jews from other lands."*
Any suggestions you offer are greatly appreciated. All the Best, Rose
