[ha-Safran] PJ Library books

2012-12-07 Thread Dina Tanners
Hello all,
I've heard that some librarians have received multiple copies as
donations of PJ Library books and do not know what to do with all of them.

I would love some, and would be happy to pay the postage. I could
probably take 2 copies of each. Some would be used in our Beit Midrash for
when parents bring young children to services or classes. I have two
small baskets for such books, one for younger children and one for middle
elementary school. Our rabbi has asked that the books have Jewish content.

Secondly, I have a friend in Kiryat Malachi, Israel that I know through
our Jewish Agency Partnership (now P2G). She and her husband are trying to
talk to their first son (who is almost 2) in English and has been delighted
with the few English books I have brought. Both parents were born in Israel
but spent some time in the US when their parents were on shlichut.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Hag Hanukat sameach!

[ha-Safran] YIVO Seminar on December 16 at 6:30 pm by Bernard Wasserstein

2012-12-07 Thread Fruma Mohrer
I would appreciate if you would post the announcement below about a YIVO
seminar on December 16, thank you, Fruma Mohrer, Chief Archivist, YIVO
Institute for Jewish Research

RUTH GAY SEMINAR IN JEWISH STUDIES
YIVO INSTITUTE FOR JEWISH RESEARCH, NEW YORK, 15 WEST 16 STREET, NYC
SUNDAY 16 DECEMBER 2012 | 6:30PM
RSVP REQUIRED: fmoh...@yivo.cjh.org | 212.294.6143

ON THE EVE: THE JEWS OF EUROPE BEFORE THE SECOND WORLD WAR

BERNARD WASSERSTEIN, PROFESSOR OF MODERN EUROPEAN JEWISH HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF
CHICAGO

How conscious were the Jews of Europe in 1939 that they stood on the edge of an
abyss? Were they blithely insouciant of the catastrophe that threatened them or
was there general awareness of the dangers that confronted them? Bernard
Wasserstein argues that on the eve of the war, even if there was no consensus
about how to confront the challenge, there was widespread understanding among
Jews on the continent that they faced an existential crisis.

Benard Wasserstein is Ulrich and Harriet Meyer Professor of Modern European
Jewish History at the University of Chicago. Previously he held appointments at
Brandeis and Glasgow Universities and was President of the Oxford Centre for
Hebrew and Jewish Studies. His many books include Britain and the Jews of
Europe 1939-1945, Vanishing Diaspora: The Jews of Europe since 1945, and The
Secret Lives of Trebitsch Lincoln which won the Golden Dagger award for
non-fiction from the Crime Writers' Association. His latest book On the Eve:
The Jews of Europe before the Second World War (Simon & Schuster) has been
praised as 'nothing less than a marvel' (London Sunday Times), 'enthralling,
heartbreaking' (San Francisco Chronicle) and 'a masterpiece' (Yiddish Forward).

Inaugurated in 2008 thanks to a major gift from the family of Ruth Gay, the
Ruth Gay Seminar in Jewish Studies takes place several times a year at the YIVO
Institute for Jewish Research. Established in honor of Ruth Gay (1922-2006),
the noted American Jewish historian and writer, the seminar series is given by
scholars who have used the resources of the YIVO Archives and who wish to share
their research with the public.

[ha-Safran] Happy Hanukkah from Diva Communications!

2012-12-07 Thread Andrea Janes
Please accept our best wishes for Hanukkah, and take a moment to check out this
little video we made as a gift to everyone this season:

http://www.divacommunications.com/whats-new/wisdom-of-the-holidays-hanukkah/

This five-minute film is narrated by Rabbi Irwin Kula and is a mediation on the
wisdom of the holiday. Rabbi Kula brings home the essence of Hanukkah,
reminding people of all faiths that, in the face of darkness and despair, you
can still find light and hope. This message has been so relevant to us in New
York City this year, and it is with heartfelt sincerity that we pass this along
to you all.

Best,

Diva Communications

Re: [ha-Safran] Tour of Manuscript Exhibit, Columbia University, 12/12/12

2012-12-07 Thread Michelle Chesner
Dear Safranim,

Please note that due to space constraints, there are only one or two spots
left on the Columbia tour. If I don't have your name by the end of the day
today (and/or haven't responded to your email), I don't have you on my
list. I need all the names in advance for security purposes. However, if
you can't make it on the Wednesday tour, you are of course welcome to come
at a later date! The physical exhibit will be open through January 25 (and
online in perpetuity).

Best,
Michelle

P.S. Hold January 22 on your calendars for a lecture by David Stern of Penn
in connection to the exhibit!
