[ha-Safran] Holiday spine labels

2012-12-18 Thread Susan Kusel
Hi everyone,
I'm searching for subject labels to put on the spines of holiday books in
our children's collection. I was able to find Hanukkah labels and a generic
"Jewish holiday" label through Brodart and Demco. I was wondering if anyone has
a source for additional holidays such as Passover and Purim. Thanks for any
help.

Hello,

We are thinking of changes some of the class novels our students read about the
Holocaust. Here are the novels students read now:

4th Jacob's Rescue
5th Number of the Stars
6th Devil's Arithmetic
7th The Wave
8th Night

We are considering changing to Diary of Anne Frank for seventh grade and Shadow

[ha-Safran] FREE: Heritage Preservation Offers Free Online Courses on Preserving Archival Collections

2012-12-18 Thread Stephanie L Gross
Heritage Preservation Offers Free Online Courses on Preserving Archival
Collections

The Connecting to Collections Online
Community, a joint project of Heritage
Preservation, the American Association
for State and Local History, and
IMLS, is offering a full series of free, online webinars
about the preservation of archival and historical collections.

The new series Caring for Yesterday's
Treasures-Today features
a number of courses on a variety of preservation topics (full list below). Each
course includes 4-6 90-minute webinars. Participants attending all the webinars
in a course and completing homework assignments will receive a certificate of
completion.

Registration is free and the first course begins on January 9, 2013. Program
details are available
online and the full
press release is copied below.

-

Heritage Preservation is proud to announce Caring for Yesterdays Treasures
Today, a new series of
free, online courses about the preservation of archival and historical
collections. Tailored to meet the needs and schedules of staff and volunteers
at libraries and archives, each course includes four to six 90-minute,
interactive webinars presented by preservation experts.

Libraries and archives shoulder an immense responsibility to protect and
preserve Americas treasures. According to A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage
Health Index Report on the State of Americas
Collections, libraries
hold 63% or about 3 billion of the 4.8 billion collection items in the United
States. Archives hold another 360 million artifacts. The survey also revealed:
*78% of libraries and 70% of archives have no emergency plan to protect
collections with staff trained to carry it out.
*Almost half of public libraries with rare or archival collections have
no staff assigned to preservation tasks.
*Archives and libraries have significant photograph and audio-visual
collections and, increasingly, digital materials.
*Tuition and travel costs can be an obstacle for professional
development.

The courses for Caring for Yesterdays Treasures Today will address these issues
and more. Participants are encouraged to submit specific questions about
collections care to ensure that the courses are directly relevant to their
needs.

The series will be conducted via the Connecting to Collections Online
Community. Each course will have its own Web page with handouts and links to
additional resources. When each course concludes, participants will be able to
continue the conversation with instructors and classmates via the Connecting to
Collections Online Community.

Participants will earn a certificate of completion if they attend all the
webinars in a course and submit simple homework assignments. Although
registration is free of charge, to enable participants to adjust their work
schedules and to indicate an institutional commitment to improve collections
care, we ask that participants submit a permission form signed by their
supervisor to attend these courses.

Course Schedule:
*Collections Care Basics: Where Do I Begin? - January 9, 10, 15, 16,
17, and 23, 2013 (all webinars at 2:00 3:30 p.m. Eastern)
*Risk Evaluation: First Step in Disaster Planning - February 5, 7, 12,
and 14, 2013 (all webinars at 2:00 3:30 p.m. Eastern)
*Protecting Your Collections: Writing a Disaster Response Plan - March
5, 7, 12, and 14, 2013 (all webinars at 2:00 3:30 p.m. Eastern)
*Caring for Digital Materials: Preventing a Digital Dark Age - five
90-minute webinars in April 2013 (dates and times TBA)
*Caring for Photographic Materials - five 90-minute webinars in May
2013 (dates and times TBA)

Courses on caring for audiovisual materials, fundraising for collections care,
and outreach activities for collections care are planned for fall 2013.

Caring for Yesterdays Treasures Today is made possible through an Institute of
Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Continuing
Education grant to Heritage Preservation. The website and webinars are produced
by Learning Times.

[ha-Safran] video or youtube

2012-12-18 Thread Beverly Geller
Dear Safranim-a student is looking for a video or youtube that she saw a few
years ago where an animated map of the United States showed what it would look
like if land were to be "given back" to the Native Americans it was taken from.
(It was in a comparison to Israel)

I have been unable to locate this. If anyone recognizes this description, I
would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks in advance.

[ha-Safran] Book on Brandeis Bardin Institute

2012-12-18 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Le-Kulam,

Please see the information below on how to order the new book on the history
of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute and how it influenced Jewish life in
Southern California. We hope you'll add a copy to your library's collection.

History of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute
Preserved for Future Generations

There is an extraordinary place in the hills of Simi Valley,
California where Jews of all ages and from around the world come for
self-exploration and discovery of their own distinct voice and identity
relative to Judaism. It is one of the most impactful institutions ever to
appear on the landscape of American Jewish life.
If you were fortunate enough to have had this experience, or even
if you have not, the recently published The Brandeis-Bardin Institute: A
Living History is a must read. The story begins in the 1930’s when the
fortuitous connection between Dr. Shlomo Bardin and United States Supreme
Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis led Dr. Bardin to create an innovative
summer program whose purpose was to arouse a spark in college students that
would awaken a positive attitude toward their Jewish culture and tradition.
It goes on to chronicle the evolution and dynamic history of the
Institute from its humble beginnings through the creation of such notable
programs as Camp Alonim for young children and House of the Book, a pioneer
in adult Jewish education.
Each chapter follows in chronological order and is filled with
vibrant and amusing historical photos, and intertwined in the narrative are
contributions of artists, scholars, and supporters, all of whom felt deeply
connected to the Institute.
This book is a labor of love born out of the dedication of four
women whose lives were indelibly marked by their many decades of involvement
with the Institute. To ensure that the institution’s history would not be
lost, they founded the Brandeis-Bardin History Project, and within it a
committee to oversee the writing of the book. All four founders--Ms. Rita
Chotiner, Ms. Elaine Gill, Ms. Mickey Wapner, and Ms. Betty Weiner--served
on the committee and invited educator Dr. Bruce Powell, a longtime
participant and scholar of Dr. Bardin’s methodology, to join them.
The author, Jenna Leventhal, is the coordinator of research
efforts at the Boston History and Innovation Collaborative. Her work in
public history includes documenting histories of nonprofit organizations,
developing museum exhibits, and producing historical documentaries.
Copies are available for purchase by calling 805.582.4450 or
ajula.edu/bbihistory.

Have a winter break,

[ha-Safran] Holocuast books for grades 4-8

2012-12-18 Thread Lois Ruby
Gee, I was hoping someone would recommend my book so I wouldn't have to toot my
own horn, but here goes. I suggest Shanghai Shadows, a novel about the 20,000
Jewish refugees who escaped to China and spent the duration of the war in
Shanghai, under Japanese occupation. It's a little-known story and a welcome (I
hope) departure from the European angle. The Jews in Shanghai weren't targeted
for extermination, but they were forced into a ghetto, where they formed a rich
and varied culture under extremely difficult circumstances.

Thanks for considering the book ...
