[ha-Safran] How to choose a mentor by Caroline Baxter

2013-01-08 Thread Stephanie L Gross
By Caroline Baxterhttp://www.caroline-baxter.com/author/admin January 3, 2013

How To Choose a Mentorhttp://www.caroline-baxter.com/how-to-choose-a-mentor

Why should you have a mentor? A mentor is someone who can offer you a different
perspective. A good mentor does not offer you specific advice, instead helps
you to find the answers yourself. A good mentor will encourage you; tell you
the truth even when the truth hurts and will also celebrate your success. A
good mentor can help you through tough decisions and can be a sounding board
for new ideas.
Mentors genuinely enjoy helping others, seeing others reach success and helping
others not make the same mistakes they might have made. A good mentor/mentee
relationship gives both parties a reward. You can pay a mentor for their
services or you can always give your mentor gifts, or pay for lunch when you
meet up as a token of your appreciation. Or you can help them in their business
by referring clients. Finding a good mentor requires some planning and thought.

  1. Identify some possible candidates. They might be friends, family or
simply someone you respect in the business world. If you are choosing family or
friends, be careful. Business and pleasure do not always mix. But if you are
sure they are far enough removed from you then go for it. When asking around,
other people may suggest contacts who you can consider asking.
  2. When you do approach someone to ask if they would be a mentor, ask
nicely, be polite and say why you thought of them. If you admire their skills,
tell them. This is the best way to get someone to say yes, as well as check
that they are a good fit.
  3. Consider how the relationship will work. What are you looking for? Try
not to be too needy. Define whether you will meet in person, or over the phone.
Once a month or once a week? Your arrangement should suit both parties.
  4. Try to find a mentor that while does think in similar ways to you, also
pushes you to think about things in a different way. Your mentor should be
someone who you occasionally disagree with, can have a mature debate or
discussion with as well as someone who has a broad view. Yes you want someone
you can gel with and enjoy their company, but you also want someone to push
your boundaries.
  5. Keep honing your own gut instinct. Don't get too dependent on your mentor
for every little decision. And remember, you don't have to take every bit of
advice your mentor gives you.
  6. Have more than one. Yes you can have several mentors if you like. Each
mentor will bring a different point of view and come to topics with varying
opinions. They will also have different expertise and experience.
  7. Say thanks and make sure your mentor knows they are appreciated. Share
your successes with them and for goodness sake, pay for lunch if you meet up.
Know their birthday and send them a card every year.
  8. Finally, know when to stop. If someone can no longer act as your mentor
then do not stress. Thank them for their time up until now and move on. Change
is good.

[ha-Safran] Thanks for hallah stories

2013-01-08 Thread Aileen Grossberg

I knew I could count on you! Within 30 minutes I had enough suggestions for at
least 2 storytimes. I ordered a few books and found a couple that I had
forgotten about in my own library.

Of course, if the library were automated, I could have come up with some
alternatives very quickly.

Now I just have to find out who borrowed our library's books without signing
them out.

Re: [ha-Safran] Online Catalog

2013-01-08 Thread ALBA TOSCANO

Some Library-Persons wrote:

We are now switching to OPALS Returns not in yet

Being viewed online is a positive thing.

Was the monetary investment worth it?

First you have to define Worth What?.There is Library Thing and other
organizations that cost all of 25 bucks for a life-time niche in their
system which is especially good for small libraries. And 25 clams isn't
going to break anybody's bank much.

Has it resulted in an increase in use of the library by members?

Ah. That's a trick. Depends on how you interpret the word USE. A ghost
lives in a castle but as long as they are careful, you shouldn't be
seeing them too often. You will never know how many different
individuals use the online catalogue. The Online Catalogue is like the
Serengeti Wildlife Reserve, i.e., it takes the existance of humungous
lot of wildebeasts to feed al little pride of lions. When I was a
school-college girl I used to bang around in the card catalogue (or
Chemical Abstracts or Social Science abstracts) for hours looking for
stuff. This did not necessarily mean I would take that material out of
the same library where I was looking up the info. Often one of my
professors already had the material in their private collection of
journals and/or books. I would ask them if the article was worth the bother.

There are a lot of stages between looking up, and finally walking in to
have a look see. A b'zillion persons browsing the online catalogue
probably won't get more than a baker's dozen of physical bodies into the
library but, on the other hand, the catalogue is extremely good P.R. for
the synagogue. Synagogues without classes or libraries are sad dying
places.

Over these last 16 years of running the Sinagoga La Javurá library, I've
noticed that people need a personalized invitation to come on over. They
call or email: I found a book in your online catalog about such a thing
which isn't exactly what I was looking for but could you tell me where I
might find something similar about this or that related topic. So, you
get all nice and charming and say: Why, yes I do bla bla bla info
info info and what's your email address and I'll put you on the
list... And, if you happen to be in the 'hood on the way home from
school/work, why not pop in for a cuppa and we'll see what we can't dig
up.

For me the point of a synagogue library is to bolster up the existance
of the synagogue. Just last Wednesday, the local Valencia Sheriff Guys
called up for a completely unrelated matter. I entertained them with
coffee and chocolate bit banana bread in the sinagoga the walls of which
are lined with the library. They staid a whole 45 minutes (which is
unheard of with peace officers) but I let them run the conversation,
time whooshed by and when the cake was gone, I sent them on their merry
with calendars and some muesli-walnutbutter balls. Will they come back?
Doubtful. But they took away a positive image of the synagogue and the
library. F

No synagogue in its right mind would stop the publication of a weekly or
monthly paper or e-bulletin which is a temporal catalogue of the
services and activities of the organization. In fact most synagogues
today are dancing all over Facebook. The word must get out to the
members or the members will stop coming. That said, a synagogue can't
afford a dead spot within the services offered to its members. Thus, an
online library catalog, with an introductory page with recent activies
and new acquisitions is another source of P.R. that can not be dismissed
out of hand by a board of directors. The library is the Go-To Place for
info when the rabi is off doing hospital rounds. Having a healthy
library and librarian (also healthy) is like having that fire
extinguisher out there in the hallway ready for all evenutalities.

Anyways. Blather blather.

Happy new secular year to one and all. I hope everybody started off on
the right as opposed to the other foot and may all your projects be fun..
