[ha-Safran] Passover book sale

2013-04-11 Thread SeferSoGood

We got rid of all the chametz, but I didn’t get rid of enough Passover
books! As many of you may know, I’m gradually closing my business, but I
still have a fairly large inventory to sell. Please contact me if you are
looking for titles other than those listed below, for ANY AGE, but I'll
continue letting you know, season by season, topic by topic, what I still have
in
stock.
This is the third SALE offering – TAKE 35% OFF YOUR TOTAL! (If you missed
the other two, see the Sale Lists at the end of this list.) Shipping will
be based on total amount purchased – the more you buy, the better your
shipping deal – email or call with your order and I’ll calculate the shipping.
Quantities are limited and only in-stock books will be sold – no
backorders – so don’t wait. Please note that I can’t accept charge cards, but
checks are fine. Thank you.

[ha-Safran] Register before April 16th for the 48th Annual AJL Conference in Houston

2013-04-11 Thread Judy Weidman
Whether you are a new Judaica librarian,or a veteran of the profession, this
year's AJL Conference has a full range of inspiring and educational
programming to appeal to you. The Sydney Taylor award winners will be
present at the popular sessions featuring the current crop of stellar
offerings for the year. Best practices, innovative progamming in your
library, emergency preparedness, genealogy reference instruction, technology
and ebooks updates will be discussed, and the question of "what to do with
the books"will be addressed. The Jews of Texas will be explored in sessions
on the history, personal tales and tours of Houston. Updates from the
National Library of Israel and Library of Congress will be offered, plus
presentations to appeal to the RAS members. Vendors will be offering
insights into their products, and of course a range of exhibitors will offer
opportunities for the attendees. This year's conference promises to be the
best yet, plus the city of Houston offers what the New York Times described
"Making Houston a Dining Destination" because of the superior culinary
attractions. And come get a first look at "Deli Man", the documentary,
attended by the filmmaker Erik Anjou and the star of the film, Houston's own
Deli Man, Ziggy Gruber. Anjou produced two other Jewish-themed films, "A
Cantor's Tale" and "The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground."

Be sure to take advantage of the early registration discount before April
16th. For any questions, check out the website or email Judy Weidman,
Houston Chair, at jud...@gmail.com. See you there!

2013-04-11 Thread Jacqueline benefraim
Not only are there copies of Don Quixote in Hebrew (but I read it in
English), but there is a song by Danny Sanderson about Don Quixote.

[ha-Safran] Book review on "From 'Likute shoshanim' to the 'Paper brigade': the story of the Strashun library in Vilna"

2013-04-11 Thread Rachel Leket-Mor
I’d like to bring to your attention a recently published review on the 2012
book by Frida Shor, Mi-Liḳuṭe shoshanim ṿe-ʻad Brigadat ha-neyar (From
Likute shoshanim to the Paper brigade: the story of the Strashun library in
Vilna).

Nathan Cohen’s review is published in ha-aretz Sefarim (Hebrew
link), but watch
out for a potential English translation at
http://www.haaretz.com/culture/books, in hope this thoughtful review will be
selected for translation.

[ha-Safran] An ode to YOU, and why we need you in Houston

2013-04-11 Thread Heidi Estrin
AJLers, we want YOU at the AJL conference in Houston, it's as simple as that.
I know it's expensive. I know Houston is hot in June. I know that for most of
our members, it's far away.
But it won't be any fun without you.
Without you, we won't learn as much.
Without you, we won't generate as much excitement or as many new ideas.
Without you, we won't be able to stay up half the night bonding with people who
really get us.
It just won't be the same if you're not there.
So please, try to find a way to be there.
Register NOW for the early bird rate (by Tuesday).
Use the "presidential letter" on your boss (link below).
Just get there any way you can.
Because we miss you!

Love,
AJL President Heidi Estrin

[ha-Safran] New Book: The American Jewish Story through Cinema

2013-04-11 Thread Ergo Media
We want to call your attention to the publication of Eric Goldman's new book,
"The American Jewish Story through Cinema" (University of Texas Press). By
analyzing select mainstream films from the beginning of the sound era until
today, Dr. Goldman's groundbreaking study uses the medium of cinema to provide
an understanding of the American Jewish experience over the last century.

Eric will be giving book talks over the next few weeks. Please join him at the
Toronto Jewish Film Festival (4/14), 92nd street Y in NYC (4/17), Brandeis
University (4/18), Jacob Burns Film Center (4/22) or the New Jersey Jewish Film
Festival (4/24). Dr. Goldman presents film clips that go back to the 1920s,
demonstrating how cinema reflects the changing situation of Jews in America.

Dr. Goldman teaches cinema at Yeshiva University and the Jewish Theological
Seminary and is president of Ergo Media.

You can get it at Steimatzky's Books

<=Cliq on that. Costs 130 NIS which is about 22euros which is about
26$$US. If you have a membership card, you get a discount which is
always cool.
If you want it in Spanish, I have about 47 g'zillion copies if you want
one for kids for adults for Martians colouring books. Funny how it's on
every shelf in every home in every bookshopand as far as I can tell
nobody has read it except me.
