I am I the minority. It is the contents that matters not the religion of the
author. According to the author the Jewish contents is minimal. I prefer books
that teach about our religion, culture, History, current issues Israel etc.

Re: [ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers

2014-01-09 Thread RCFRISCHER
I would like to weigh in with a hearty agreement that content and literary
worth should be the determining factors, not the author's religion, gender,
hair color or associates. Rachel may remember we featured a number of
speakers at Sinai Temple, during long-ago days in LA, whose work was
significant in terms of Jewish interest, values, history or culture but who
were not
MOT's.

I wish her well in educating her committee. With her help, they'll learn
to deepen their collection and expand their programming, not limit it by
setting up inappropriate barriers. Lois's example is well taken and her
advice worth following.

Best of luck,
Rita

Dear Hasafranim,

We have a respected professor and historical novelist in town -- Grace
Tiffany -- who just wrote a book called Paint set during the Shakespearean
era, the protagonist being a part Jewish, part Italian female poet. According
to the author herself, the Jewish content is minimal. However, she also
wrote an earlier book, based on The Merchant of Venice called The Turquoise
Ring, which is primarily Jewish.

I'm considering inviting her to speak, but one member of my library
committee suggested that, as a Jewish institution, it would be best to support

Jewish authors exclusively. Such a thing never occurred to me; to me, as
long as the scholarship and perspective is sound, then the author should have

earlier book, based on The Merchant of Venice called The Turquoise Ring, which
is primarily Jewish.

I'm considering inviting her to speak, but one member of my library committee
suggested that, as a Jewish institution, it would be best to support Jewish
authors exclusively. Such a thing never occurred to me; to me, as long as the
scholarship and perspective is sound, then the author should have something of
great value to impart.

I'm curious as to what others have done and considered regarding non-Jewish
speakers.

Re: [ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers

2014-01-09 Thread Lois Ruby
I'm stunned by the notion that Rachel's committee would object to having this
non-Jewish (and worthy) author speak. Yes, we need to support our local Jewish
authors. In fact, my library committee is sponsoring its second Author Panel
wherein local Jewish authors who write on mostly secular topics discuss their
work. However, a library represents first and foremost the literature, not the
author. Let's look at it from a different perspective. I am a Jewish author,
and I am currently invited to speak at two Catholic schools. They apparently
don't feel they need to support only Catholic writers. So, I say invite Grace
Tiffany and promote it robustly! L OIS RUBY www.loisruby.com Author of ...

[ha-Safran] Interesting article re: Jewish Geneology from Slate

2014-01-09 Thread Stephanie L Gross
Here's The Fascinating Origin Of Almost Every Jewish Last Name

Bennett
Muraskin,
 Slate

Ashkenazic Jews were among the last Europeans to take family names. Some
German-speaking Jews took last names as early as the 17th century, but the
overwhelming majority of Jews lived in Eastern Europe and did not take last
names until compelled to do
so. The
process began in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1787 and ended in Czarist
Russia in 1844.

In attempting to build modern nation-states, the authorities insisted that Jews
take last names so that they could be taxed, drafted, and educated (in that
order of importance). For centuries, Jewish communal leaders were responsible
for collecting taxes from the Jewish population on behalf of the government,
and in some cases were responsible for filling draft quotas. Education was
traditionally an internal Jewish affair.

[ha-Safran] Non-Jewish speakers

Dear Hasafranim,

I'm stumped. A patron asked about some sort of memoir by a woman upon whom the

[ha-Safran] Today's Google Doodle - Chaim Nachman Bialik

2014-01-09 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Today's Google Doodle honors Chaim Nachman Bialik, who was
one of the pioneers of modern Hebrew poetry and came to be
recognized as Israel's national poet.

I posted the Google Doodle at:
http://www.jr.co.il/t/doodles/index-2014.htm

I also posted on the page a video of Arik Einstein singing the
Hebrew song: "Bring Me in Under your Wings"
The lyrics were written by Chaim Nachman Bialik.

FYI - I graduated from Bialik Elementary School which was named
after the poet. My mom a"h, taught Hebrew at Bialik School
from 1964 to 1982.

I also upload the doodle to my Facbeook album at:
http://bit.ly/Cool-Google-Doodles

Please share with friends. Thank you!

Have a good day,
Jacob
