[ha-Safran] Gershwind-Bennett Isaac Leeser Digital Repository moves to new URL

2014-04-01 Thread arthur kiron

Dear Jewish Studies Communities,

The Penn Libraries' *Gershwind-Bennett Isaac Leeser Digital Repository*,
featuring access to the personal papers and publications of Isaac
Leeser, widely regarded as the foremost American Jewish leader in
antebellum America, has moved to a new URL:

http://leeser.library.upenn.edu/

The site has been developed as an international partnership over the
course of seven years and thanks are due to a number of people,
families, foundations and institutions, whose names and work are fully
acknowledged on the site:

http://leeser.library.upenn.edu/ilproject.php

The Leeser site is the first of what we hope will be a continuing number
of digital initiatives as part of our *

J**esselson-Kaplan American Genizah Project*:

http://leeser.library.upenn.edu/agproject.php .

The Jesselson-Kaplan American Genizah Project, founded in 2006, is an
international initiative to integrate digital technologies into the way
we study early American Jewry. Its primary goal is to create an open
access digital repository or "genizah" of physically dispersed primary
sources that document the development of Jewish life in the western
hemisphere from the 16th-19th centuries.

We welcome your feedback as the site continues to evolve.

   Thanks,

   Arthur

[ha-Safran] One Book program

2014-04-01 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello all,
My synagogue is planning on doing a One Book- One Community program, and
we're having difficulty picking the right book.

Ideally, we'd like to conclude the program with a visit from the author- so
we're trying to make sure the author of the book we select would be able to
come to our shul in the Washington D.C. area.

We would like to find a book that appeals to both men and women, preferably a
novel, and not a Holocaust title.

Any feedback about recommended books or successful programs would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you so much!

Re: [ha-Safran] A book I would like to publicize (Yiddish Songs from Warsaw 1929-1934: The Itzik Zhelonek Collection)

2014-04-01 Thread Tamara Silberman
Will you also be doing a recording and concerts?  I believe the best way to get
the word out is for people to hear this music.  See if you can get a grant. Try
calling the Yiddish Center in Amherst, MA for some suggestions.

Best of Luck

Hello,

I am an independent musician and author. I have spent three years finding and
compiling the melodies to almost 120 songs chosen by Warsaw book and
record-store owner Itzik Zhelonek as "The Best and Newest Theater Songs" of his
time. He published the lyrics to the songs in 7 tiny booklets I found at the
National Library in Jerusalem and at the Chabad library in Brooklyn. This
seemed to me a wonderful primary source answering the question: what songs were
people loving before the Holocaust brought an almost permanent end to jovial,
droll, cosmopolitan Yiddish music?

I'm currently doing the final edit on the book and it will be published in May.
It will have the melodies, chords, transliterations, translations, notes on the
songs and the singers, and information about the archives where the original
sources I used can be found. I believe this book is unique. Many of these songs
have, I'm quite sure, not been heard since before the War.

What might be the best way for me to publicize this book to libraries?

Thank you,
Jane Peppler

The book is already available (though before its last edit) as a pdf, see
http://yiddishemporium.com/ the first item. You can see the table of contents
there, too.

[ha-Safran] Relaunch of Natural Jewish Parenting magazine

2014-04-01 Thread Yael Resnick
Some of you might remember my magazine, Natural Jewish Parenting, which was in
many Jewish libraries but went on hiatus several years ago. I am now working to
relaunch the magazine, and I have been running a Jewcer campaign to make it
possible. There are only 10 days to go; I have had a lot of enthusiastic
support and I am halfway to the goal.

I would be very grateful if you would take just a few minutes read my page and
watch the video, and consider contributing a small amount. It would also help
if you would share this link with others who might also like to see NJP back in
print.

[ha-Safran] Walking through the land of the bible (Magnes press)

Hello
We would like to introduce a new book published by Magnes

Walking through the land of the bible

Historical 3D Adventure

By James H. Charlesworth
 , Michael Medina

The Land of the Bible, cradle of Judaism and Christianity, is a world of
wonders.
Here Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his first born son Isaac,
returning from decades of exile in Egypt the Israelites established a
nation, and Jesus with the Twelve Apostles founded what would be known
as Christianity.
Due to its strategic position and spiritual significance, this small
piece of land attracted kings, emperors, and sultans who throughout
thousands of years claimed it in their quest to dominate the world. It
is also a land of unique topographical phenomena. Most notably the
world's lowest spot The Dead Sea, the largest Makhtesh, the Great Rift
Valley, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

Michael Medina's three dimensional photos accompanied by Professor James
H. Charlesworth's descriptions walk you in Jesus' footsteps as well as
through some of the Holy Land's most significant and spectacular
historical, archeological, and topographical wonders.
