[ha-Safran] Proposal for Revision of Uighur Romanization Table

2014-11-06 Thread Johnson, Bruce
Proposal for Revision of Uighur Romanization Table
11/05/14

A proposal to revise the Uighur romanization table has been submitted to the
Library of Congress and is available for review at
Uighurhttp://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/uighur-rev.pdf
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/uighur-rev.pdf [PDF, 207 KB].

The objectives of this revision are fourfold:

 * 1. The existing rules were occasionally confusing and conflicting (e.g.
Rule 2) and hampered reversibility (Rules 2, 6, 7, and 9).
 * 2. The letters i and y are distinct in Uighur and should be distinct
in Romanization.
 * 3. Medial hamzah should be romanized ' (alif).
 * 4. The new table is now almost completely reversible.

Comments on this proposed romanization table may be sent to Bruce Johnson,
Policy and Standards Division (b...@loc.govmailto:b...@loc.gov) by February
5, 2015.

[ha-Safran] collection development policy

2014-11-06 Thread Rachel Lewin
Continuing on the mission statement theme.can anyone share their
collection development policy?

My predecessor spent so much time cleaning up years of accumulated junk,
and putting everything into an online catalog, that she didn't focus too
much on adding to the collection.

Now, we are in a new shlav, where there is space on the shelves, and
(almost) everything is organized. I want to come up with a real plan--
not just randomly purchasing items that look interesting

Thanks!

[ha-Safran] new National Jewish Book Club from Jewish Book Council

2014-11-06 Thread Miryam Pomerantz Dauber
Dear AJL members,
I wanted to send you a quick note to let you know about an exciting new
project from Jewish Book Council's JBC Book Clubs department that I hope
will be of interest to you. The National Jewish Book Club is complimentary
program that offers an exciting, accessible way to discover a new favorite
book or re-read an old one.

For this first year, Jewish Book Council has selected 16 titles, both
fiction and non-fiction, from the breadth of Jewish literature. The
books—current, classic, and everything in between—were carefully selected
for their quality, their potential for interesting conversation, and the
variety that they represent. The titles are presented in a beautiful book
club guide with information on each book and discussion questions.

The National Jewish Book Club is designed to encourage readers and book
groups to engage with the program in the way that suits them best. Book
groups can choose how many of the suggested titles they wish to read and in
what order, plus they also have the option of connecting with selected
authors online through the JBC Live Chat program whenever possible.

Additionally, JBC will facilitate six online conversation each year. These
conversations will create their own national book club and also serve as a
supplement to a book club's individual reading. The first conversation is
coming up soon; join us on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 8:15 pm EST/5:15 pm PST as
we talk with Molly Antopol, the author of *The UnAmericans*!

If you'd like more information, please visit
www.jewishbookcouncil.org/bookclub/national-jewish-book-club.

And of course, JBC Book Clubs' regular programs are all available, from
book recommendations and support in starting a book club to video chats
with any of over 400 authors and assistance in locating or creating
discussion questions.

Please feel free to be in touch with any questions or anything that I can
do to assist book clubs at your library.

Thanks!
Miri

Re: [ha-Safran] question about Cut Me Loose

2014-11-06 Thread Joyce Levine
Dear Mirele,
I had a similar experience with the book The Rabbi's Daughter by Reva
Mann. I had only read some reviews, which were positive and didn't convey
the exact nature of the book. A 9th grader took it out and returned it
quickly, saying that she didn't like it. I then got an uncomfortable
feeling and read it myself, soon deciding that it didn't belong on our
shelves because of overly explicit and graphic sexual descriptions (yes, I
think sex in books is fine but often subtlety is best). I don't censor
books but this one was over the top. So I de-accessioned it myself!

 Hi Mirele:

This is a tricky situation! Does your school have a collection
development policy? A collection development policy can protect you from
having to personally make a judgement call and can outline procedures to
have a book removed from a library. I do not think Amalia's suggestion of
hiding the book behind the desk solves the problem. If you do not have a
collection development policy, now would be a good time to develop one with
the head of school and or other leaders within your community.

Let me know how I can be helpful!

the answer to the first is no and the answer to the second is yes then I

reviews on Amazon (one very astute one in particular) that lays out what
the book is about and discusses the meaning of its contents. It seems to
be a raw account of what happened to the author 15 years ago. For a certain
part of the population it sounds like it would be dangerous but for others
enlightening. It is your call but I think promoting the book might cause
controversy (because the teacher might make a stink to others) whereas
putting it on the shelf for someone to find might be a better solution. It
just depends on the make up of your school population. The reviewer seems
to feel that the girl never got any proper lessons on behavior so that this
is a cautionary tale. All of this said I have removed purchases from my
shelves because of negative comments that could have caused upset. I worked
in an elementary school where there was more parental screening than there
possibly would be in an upper school. But then I am a coward and try to
avoid conflict if possible. All of this said I have not read the book.

Back in the Stone Age when I got my MLS degree, we talked about selection,
and not censorship.
We would *never* engage in censorship! However, there are books one simply
doesn't select for the collection. You may have to justify the items you do
select, but not the ones you don't.
Do they not speak in these terms today?

Hi Mirele:

This is a tricky situation! Does your school have a collection
development policy? A collection development policy can protect you from
having to personally make a judgement call and can outline procedures to have a
book removed from a library. I do not think Amalia's suggestion of hiding
the book behind the desk solves the problem. If you do not have a
collection development policy, now would be a good time to develop one with the
head of school and or other leaders within your community.

Let me know how I can be helpful!

Best,

Is your school Orthodox or UltraOrthodox? Have you

There are several reviews on Amazon (one very astute one in particular) that
lays out what the book is about and discusses the meaning of its
contents. It seems to be a raw account of what happened to the author 15
years ago. For a certain part of the population it sounds like it would be
dangerous but for others enlightening. It is your call but I think
promoting the book might cause controversy (because the teacher might make a
stink to others) whereas putting it on the shelf for someone to find might be a
better solution. It just depends on the make up of your school
population. The reviewer seems to feel that the girl never got any proper
lessons on behavior so that this is a cautionary tale. All of this said I
have removed purchases from my shelves because of negative comments that could
have caused upset. I worked in an elementary school where there was more
parental screening than there possibly would be in an upper school. But then I
am a coward and try to avoid conflict if possible. All of this said I
have not read the book.

I just bought a

not one to censor, but I am one to question whether I should promote a title or
leave it, inconspicuously, on the shelf for someone to discover. Are
there any school librarians out there who have encountered similar issues with
this book? How have you handled them?
Thank you!
