[ha-Safran] Sunday hours to mirror community use

2015-03-25 Thread Judy Falzon
Hello,

I am writing a proposal to my library administration to request that the public
library branch I manage be allowed to open on Sundays. Our branch is located in
the heart of the Orthodox Jewish community in our city. Our branch follows the
system-wide standard Mon-Sat open schedule, which is not convenient for our
core group of users. (We limit our programming days to Mon-Wed. since many
families are doing last minute preparations for the Sabbath on Thursdays and
Fridays.)

Our Main Library is open Sunday afternoons, yet my families tell me they would
much prefer to walk to our neighborhood branch on Sundays. During the proposed
Sunday open hours, I would like to offer a storytime as well as
browsing/circulation services.

To support my proposal, I have news articles about the public library in
Brooklyn adding Sunday hours back in 2009. I also have information about a 2005
study from SEFLIN on Jewish use of libraries in Southeast Florida.

I am hoping the collective wisdom of this group might point me to other studies
or arguments that would help me demonstrate that mirroring our neighborhood
lifestyle with convenient hours of access would boost circulation, attendance,
and public service to our patrons. If anyone from the group has thoughts to
share please send me an email. My address is: j.fal...@sjcpl.org

Thank you,

The San Bernardino Public Library System (California) has a branch on
25581 Barton Road in Loma Linda (California) which is a 7th Day
Adventist town. As you can see from the web page

http://www.sbclib.org/LibraryLocations/LomaLindaBranchLibrary.aspx
...the library hours follow the Adventist religious traditions:

_Branch Hours_

Monday 11-7

Tuesday 11-7

Wednesday 11-7

Thursday 10-6

*Friday Closed *

**

*Saturday Closed*

Sunday 9-5

This is because the Adventists of Loma Linda which make up about 99.98%
of the population take their religion quite seriously. The Loma Linda
Hospital is excellant especially their cafeteria which is 100% vegan.
When we were high schoolers with our newly-won driver's licences we used
to go out to Loma Linda on Sundays to study in the library, shop at the
vegetarian supermarket, and then have a vegeburger in the hospital
cafeteria. We used to drive to other places and do other things as well,
but we never told our parents about that part.

Happy Pésaj!

[ha-Safran] Rare book collection bookcase?

2015-03-25 Thread Sara Lesley Arnold
Hello everyone,

I am researching glass front bookcases for a new rare book collection at
our library. The collection includes a talmud set that is quite large, so
we need shelves that are adjustable-- the shelves available through Demco
are not nearly deep enough for this set unfortunately.

Does anybody have experience selecting such a piece? Not sure if
bookshelves made for the home may have finishes that can damage old books
in the long term?

Thanks for your help!

Re: [ha-Safran] Rare book collection bookcase?

2015-03-25 Thread Daniel Stuhlman

We have glass book cases in our library that we use for the reserve
collection. They don't work. First the doors are not secure. The
doors are easy to remove when locked. The locks are hard to use and
eventually they just refused to work. While the shelves adjust,
they don't do well for paperbacks or large size (greater than 27 cm)
materials.
Just my two cents.
