Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

2015-05-07 Thread Sharon Elswit
Good morning, Eileen,
There is also the story where parts of the body argue about which is most
important . It appears as "The Great Debate" in Peninnah Schram's Jewish
Stories One Generation Tells Another and in the picture book Milk of a
Lionness by I.B. Singer, and then as an African tale (where a stomach also
participates in the arguing), "What is the most important part of the
body?," in Julius Lester's How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have?
There are also several versions of The Magic Pomegranate (Jewish, also in
Peninnnah's book) which helps to heal the princess. Eric Kimmel has a
picture book version from the Middle East called The Three Princes, where
the healing fruit is an orange. And then, in working on my new guide to
Latin American folklore, I came across another.

There's a variant of Howard Schwartz's Cottage of Candles from Mexico,

*La Madrina Muerte = Godmother Death,* Olga Loya, *Momentos Mágicos = Magic
Moments*.

Plus several versions of the youngest brother who brings back healing
leaves to cure his father's blindness, but is killed by his jealous
brothers. Let me know if that's one you'd like.

Warmly,

Sharon

Re: [ha-Safran] the Dream and the Treasure

2015-05-07 Thread Andrea Rapp
Captain Jiri and Rabbi Jacob is Marilyn Hirsh's telling of this story. It's
interesting  because her version illuminates the European Jewish experience and
Jewish values, in that the Rabbi uses his treasure to teach his oft-bullied
students about self-defense, one sees the Jewish value placed on books and
learning, and a disdain for soldiering. So for the purposes of a college class,
it might be useful.  (On the other hand, the class may find the unflattering
portrayal of the Captain's (non-Jewish) troops  to be offensive!

[ha-Safran] Tell NPR about The Book of Life

2015-05-07 Thread Heidi Estrin

I know that many of you listen to my monthly podcast, The Book of Life. I just
found this podcast questionnaire and I don't know if it's too late to
participate, but the form is still up so let's give it a whirl. NPR asks
"What's your favorite podcast episode?"

If you enjoy The Book of Life, consider sharing a favorite episode with NPR
listeners! Maybe you appreciated the recent discussion of diversity. Maybe you
enjoy the coverage of events like Book Expo America and the AJL conference.
Maybe you recall fondly (as I do) the time Simms Taback sang a Yiddish song on
the show! (That was in August, 2006.)

Click here to access the form and tell NPR about The Book of
Life!
Bonus points if you share the URL.

Thanks for helping more people learn about the show!

[ha-Safran] Fw: New Title of noveals: Five Selves

2015-05-07 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
I’m writing op behalf of Emanuela Barasch-Rubinstein author of Five Selves. It
was sent to our general address.
Hello,
I am the author of Five Selves, a collection of five novellas published by
Holland House Books in the UK. I wrote the stories in Hebrew; wishing to make
them available to a wider public, I translated them into English. I have
published several academic books, but this is my first experience with literary
writing.Though the stories take place in Israel, they deal with general themes:
the death of a loved one; modern contemporary values of success; overcoming a
phobia. Only one story is about Israeli society: three women that represent
three generations of Israelis. The last novella is a more experimental one: a
man lost his memory in a car accident, and now examines his life from an
estranged primordial perspective.
The book got three excellent reviews: A starred Publishers Weekly review:
http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-1-909374-79-9A , A review at The Jewish
Chronicle: http://www.thejc.com/arts/books/130628/review-five-selves , The
Mail on Sunday, February 15th 2015: Best New Fiction.

A more detailed description of the process of writing is found in my blog
http://onourselvesandothers.com/writing-five-selves/

I hope you will find the book interesting.

Regards,

[ha-Safran] Children's Illustrated Holocaust Books

2015-05-07 Thread Anna Olswanger
Lisa Silverman, Library Director of Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library, just sent
me her written bibliography of Holocaust picture books, which she has updated
with 2014 and 2015 books. I added her updates to my "Children's Illustrated
Holocaust Books" page:

http://www.pinterest.com/olswanger/childrens-illustrated-holocaust-books/

Please let me know if you think I should add other books (they need to be in
print and available from publishers' websites).

I am continuing to add to all my Pinterest pages, so let me know if you have
suggestions there, too:

I hope the pages will be of interest to you.

Thanks.
