[ha-Safran] The Bible Retold by Jewish Artists, Writers, Composers and Filmmakers

2015-11-11 Thread Barry Walfish
Dear Safranim,

Here is the announcement of my recently published book:
The Bible Retold by Jewish Artists, Writers, Composers and Filmmakers
Edited by Helen Leneman,
Barry Dov Walfish.

Available from the usual sources.

Helen Leneman and Barry Dov Walfish, both specialists in biblical reception
history, have compiled an unusually rich collection of new essays by experts in
their fields. This book is a pioneering attempt to portray and analyse the
visions of twentieth- and twenty-first century Jewish artists working in
different media-visual art, literature (novels, poetry and short stories),
music (opera, oratorio and song), and film-who have retold biblical narratives
through their art. Reading these essays together will bring a new appreciation
and understanding of what makes the perspective of these visual artists,
writers, composers and filmmakers on the Hebrew Bible uniquely Jewish.

All of these Jewish visions can be considered a form of modern midrash, as the
artists imaginatively fill in gaps in the biblical narrative, bringing a modern
sensibility to the meanings of the stories.

Under the heading 'Biblical Women', the stories of the matriarchs, Hagar, and
other biblical women are re-imagined in the visual arts, poetry and music.
Several further chapters focus on the story of the Aqedah (Binding of Isaac),
as represented in the visual arts, literature and music. Other retellings of
biblical narratives through short stories are then examined, while yet other
chapters explore the books of Esther and Psalms as envisioned and retold in the
visual arts, opera, literature and film

These retellings, analysed and discussed by the authors of this ground-breaking
volume, will stimulate the reader to view the texts in new ways or to confront
their challenge to personal or traditional interpretations of those texts.

Helen Leneman is an independent scholar, singer and pianist living in Bethesda,
Maryland.
Barry Dov Walfish is Judaica specialist at the University of Toronto Libraries
and Curator of Judaica at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.

Re: [ha-Safran] Cuban stories

2015-11-11 Thread Sharon Elswit
Good morning, Rita,
Tropical Secrets is probably more on target with Jewish content for adult
readers, but I wanted to share a Cuban folktale which I discovered while
researching for a forthcoming Caribbean Story Finder. There are many
Sephardic roots buried in the Latin American tales, but I was astonished by
how much the many versions of The Rooster Who Went to His Uncle's Wedding
resemble Had Gadya. The rooster's beak has gotten dirty when he can't
resist eating a kernel of corn in the mud on route to his uncle's wedding
and he tries to get the grass to clean it and then the sheep to eat the
grass when it refuses and then the stick to beat the goat, etc.
Warmly,
Sharon Elswit
The Jewish Story Finder
The Latin American Story Finder
The East Asian Story Finder
P.S. Please contact me off-list if you are interested in sources for the
rooster story or a Cuban romantic tale about two children who are betrothed
at birth.

[ha-Safran] Need help ? AJL is here for you

2015-11-11 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Dear AJL members,
We have an amazing group of experienced Judaic librarians that are happy to
share their expertise. When I posted on Hasafran a request for volunteers to
serve as mentors, I did not expect to get over a dozen replies within a few
hours.
The team represent librarians form synagogues, universities, archives and
schools.
If you are new on the job, not having all the skills or just want an answer to
more than a question, that can be answered on Hasafran, contact me. I will pair
you with one of the volunteers.
Remember, You will not be judged by your questions. Librarians, by nature,
love to share their knowledge and expertise.
Heartfelt thanks to all the librarians that answered the call,
