*"The Stones Remember: a Presentation by Poet and Hebrew Translator Barbara
Goldberg"*


Please join us on *Sunday, April 30, 2017, from 11 am-1 pm* for a program
with poet and translator from the Hebrew Barbara Goldberg.  Ms. Goldberg
will present the poetry of Moshe Dor and other Israeli poets whose work she
has translated.   Ms. Goldberg will raise some of the challenges involved
in the translation process and how she resolved them.  In addition, Ms.
Goldberg will read a selection of her own poems that were influenced by her
work as a Hebrew translator.  Some poems will be read in Hebrew and in
English translation.



The program will be held at the home of Gail Shirazi, 11033 Snowshoe Lane,
Rockville, MD 20852.  Please RSVP by COB, Wednesday, April 26, 2017 to

*Bios*


*Barbara Goldberg *authored five prize-winning books of poetry, including
one that received the Felix Pollak Poetry Prize.  She and Israeli poet
Moshe Dor translated Dor’s poetry in *Scorched by the Sun *and Ronny
Someck’s poetry in *The Fire Stays in Red*.  Goldberg’s 2016 selection as
translation and series editor of the Word Works’ International
Editions is *Handful
of Salt*, translations of the Kurdish poet Kajal Ahmad.


*Moshe Dor* (1932-2016), born in Tel Aviv, authored 40 books of poetry,
essays, interviews, and children’s books.  Recipient of the Bialik Prize,
Israel’s top literary award, and twice winner of Israel’s Prime Minister’s
Award in Literature, he was Counselor for Cultural Affairs in London, and
Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at American University, Washington, D.C.
As a youth he joined the Haganah and later served on the editorial board of
Ma’ariv.  His poems have been translated into some 30 languages. Dor, along
with American poet Barbara Goldberg, has translated books by Dor and Ronny
Someck as well as four anthologies of contemporary Israeli poetry. He was
the lyricist of “erev shel shoshanim,” sung worldwide as a wedding song.

Amitai Mendelsohn investigates the various appearances of the figure of Jesus 
in Israeli art as a significant, multifaceted and ever-present phenomenon. 
Through works by prominent artists from different generations, it discusses in 
depth the evolving attitudes of Jewish, Zionist pre-state, and Israeli art 
towards Jesus, from the second half of the nineteenth century until today: from 
artists laboring "In the shadow of the Cross" to artists who saw Jesus as a 
symbol of the rebirth of the Jewish people in the land of Israel, and artists 
whose engagement with Jesus is detached from the complex and fraught relations 
between Christianity and Judaism, and who see him as symbolizing the suffering 
artist. The book examines the different directions taken by Israeli artists in 
portraying the figure of Jesus, and proves the extent of this phenomena and its 
ever present importance.
Dr. Amitai Mendelsohn is the Curator of Israeli Art in the Israel Museum, 
Jerusalem.
He holds an M.A. in Art History from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and 
finished his Doctorate in Israeli Art in the Ben-Gurion University of the 
Negev. His PhD. Thesis focused on the figure of Jesus in Jewish and Israeli Art.
