[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Book Award

I am pleased to announce that Rena Citrin and Marjorie Shuster are joining
the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee.  They officially begin their four
year committee service at the AJL Conference in June. They have already
started to receive and review submissions for this award.

Rena is teacher/librarian at the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in
Chicago.  She is active in the Chicago chapter of AJL and is a frequent
children’s book reviewer for AJL.  Marjorie recently became the librarian
at Congregation Emanuel of the City of New York. She has many years’
experience as a day school librarian.

The STBA Committee received amazing applications from a large number of
candidates and had a difficult time selecting only two new members for the
committee.  Everyone who applied was extremely qualified and capable.

We will again seek new STBA members in the late fall of 2017 to replace
several existing members whose service on the committee ends in June 2018.

Please welcome Rena and Marjorie to the committee.

Thank you, everyone, for these kind words! I am deeply indebted to the 
Groner-Wikler Scholarship Committee for this vote of confidence in my work as a 
Judaica librarian.


My particular mission at AJL will be to encourage SSC members to consider 
submitting articles with a children's literature focus to Judaica 
Librarianship. JL is a peer-reviewed journal that "provides a forum for 
scholarship on all theoretical or practical aspects of Jewish Studies 
librarianship and cultural stewardship in the digital age; bibliographical, 
bibliometric and comprehensive studies related to Jewish booklore; historical 
studies or current surveys of noteworthy collections; and extensive reviews of 
reference works and other resources, including electronic databases and 
informational websites." As you can see, it is not limited to research 
articles. Do you steward a collection that JL readers (and that's all of AJL) 
should know about? That's just one example of the type of article you might 
consider...there are many more!

For a concert performance one of our School of Jewish Music instructors is 
looking for the lyrics of a poem of Saul Tchernichowsky in Yiddish - Amol iz 
geven a melech.  We have the Hebrew, ויהי בישורון מלך.  It’s possible this was 
translated from the Hebrew.  It looks liked it was arranged by Engel.

movement during WWII. With only 400 volunteers versus the Vichy garrison of 
25,000 troops, the underground succeeded in taking control of Algiers for one 
night, before handing the city over the Americans, who arrive via an amphibious 
landing the next morning.

[ha-Safran] AJL 2017 Conference Early Bird Deadline April 27

We are excited that so many of you have already registered for the 2017 AJL 
Conference, "The Sky's the Limit: The Next Generation of Judaica 
Librarianship," which will take place from June 19-21 in New York City. For 
those of you who have not yet registered, keep in mind that the April 27 Full 
Early Bird Registration deadline is just a month away. To register, please go 
to the Upcoming Conference page of the AJL website where you will also find 
information regarding the most recent program schedule, conference fees, 
stipend applications (March 31 deadline), hotel, tours, and frequently asked 
questions. Conference Chair Jim Rosenbloom, Programming Chair Michelle Chesner, 
and other members of the NYC Conference Committee have been working incredibly 
hard to put together a wonderful 52nd annual conference. We hope to see you
