[ha-Safran] New Book By Prof. Lev. Hakak: Reading Modern Hebrew Poetry and Prose

2017-04-27 Thread Hasafran
*Reading modern Hebrew poetry and prose*

>From the author: "This is a collection of articles surrounding Modern
Hebrew Literature. It includes articles about the prose fiction of S.Y.
Agnon, who is Modern Hebrew Literature’s only Nobel Laureate, as well as a
piece discussing the work of the internationally acclaimed Hebrew writer
A.B. Yehoshua. Most of the articles were published in various academic
periodicals. Lev Hakak guides us with passion and depth on a rich and
exciting journey into worlds created by prominent Hebrew authors. These
worlds depict Jewish life in Europe, Near Eastern countries and Israel. It
begins in medieval times in Spain and ends in contemporary Israel. We meet
a medieval Hebrew poet whose love for Israel was the leading spark in his
life, and a Rabbi who strove to touch the souls of his readers through
sharing folktales. We meet a man and a woman undergoing a marriage crisis,
a young man who gives up love because of the dominating older generation, a
criminal who turns to faith on his way to execution, and more. The book
also provides a little glimpse into Israeli movies and is also a literary
voyage into the wounded souls of Holocaust survivors and others who
converged to form the new nation-state on ancient soil."

[ha-Safran] Temple Beth Am Sunday Salon

2017-04-27 Thread Etta Gold

Please join us this Sunday for a remarkable presentation by Peter Tarjan:
Date: Sunday, April 30, 2017
Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Adult Reading Room, RAMBAM Center (Library)
Temple Beth Am
The Janet z"l and Richard Yulman Campus
5950 N. Kendall Drive, Pinecrest, Florida 33156

Transplanted Lives
The Adventures of Young Jewish Immigrants from post-Fascist and
Communist Hungary to the Free World Following the 1956 Uprising

Susan V. Meschel and Peter Tarjan bring us their stories along with several
others' accounts of seeking freedom and escape from persecution.

The majority of the protagonists had survived the Holocaust in Hungary and had
written about their wartime experiences as children, and post-war experiences
as teenagers in two earlier collections in 1992 and 1998. These are their
recollections of escaping from Hungary, the land of their birth - where they
never had real roots - following the 1956 Uprising against Communist rule.

Their family backgrounds represent a broad range and so does the spectrum of
careers at the time of writing their stories more than a half century later.
The subject seems to resonate at this time when millions of displaced persons
seek a better life in freedom and security around the world.

The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee will soon be starting to evaluate
manuscripts for the 2018 award.

We have an opening on the committee. Members read, evaluate, and choose a

The committee is especially interested in members from the South and Midwest.
