[ha-Safran] Looking for a suggestion of a collection of short stories for a women's discussion group

2017-11-30 Thread Amalia Warshenbrot
Shalom,
I’m looking for a suggestion of a collection of short stories for a women's
discussion group.
A discussion stories from the book Apples from the Desert was very successful.
The discussion on the stories in the book After Abel (recommended by Rachel
Kamin) went well too.
Thank you to Rachel for suggesting the book The Best Place on Earth. I like it
but I was asked for additional suggestions.
Shabbat shalom,
Amalia

Re: [ha-Safran] ISO short films for students

2017-11-30 Thread Rachel Kamin
I highly recommend the short videos at https://www.bimbam.com/. They are all
very short (like 2-5 minutes) and are available for free on almost any Jewish
topic imaginable from holidays, life cycles and values to each of the parshiot.
There are also downloadable teacher guides.

I am looking for short film titles -- available in DVD format -- for children
(grades 3-6) on an wide variety of Jewish-related topics. I’m trying to gather
a collection that can be shown to students, and most are just too long; I’m
hoping for 15-60 minutes, maximum. These can be animated, musical, humorous,
or on serious subjects. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

2017-11-30 Thread Stahl, Sheryl
Thanks! I’m glad that it was valuable to you. For those who were interested,
but couldn’t attend the session live, the recording will be available through
ALA.

I’m looking forward to relaxing as a participant in Rebecca Jefferson’s
upcoming webinar Dec. 10. And then I will be doing another one January 10 on
other aspect of Judaica cataloging.

[ha-Safran] Launched: National Portal Museums in Israel

2017-11-30 Thread Dov Winer
Cheers to Shirit Keessem (cc'ed) head of the Department of Museums and

Plastic Arts and her team at the Ministry of Culture who led the
development of

this important portal

The National Portal Museums in Israel was launched last week at the
14th EVA/MInerva Jerusalem Conference on Advanced Technologies for Culture.

The portal:

http://www.museumsinisrael.gov.il/en/Pages/default.aspx

The announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

http://mfa.gov.il/MFA/IsraelExperience/Culture/Pages/The-Museums-in-Israel-
National-Portal-Culture-and-History-for-the-Digital-Age-.aspx

The Museums in Israel National Portal
 is the new virtual home
for dozens of Israel’s
museums, providing visitors with unlimited access to more than 63,000
photographs,
items, and exhibits with a touch of a button.

The five year project, which began in 2012, through a joint venture of
Israel’s Ministry of
Culture and Sport, the Prime Minister’s Office, and Israel’s Heritage
Division, is the first
of its kind large scale initiative to consolidate Israel’s museums under
one digital roof.

The portal, which features works of art, archaeological artifacts,
extensive Judaica, and
original historical documents from prehistoric times to today, will add
tremendous value
to students, researchers, and visitors interested in a number of fields. In
addition to some
of Israel’s most outstanding collections, the portal also gives visitors
access to millions
of items featured in Europeana, the
European digital cultural library, through an agreement
signed between the two parties.

Enjoy!

Interesting. It seems that the map is populated only by "Contributors [map
represents all organizations] that have shared library performance metrics or
SDG stories with us, such as national library associations, national libraries,
individual libraries, and library support organizations." - click on the
Contributors tab.
So it seems to me that only the University of Haifa library took the time to
contribute their data, while the Palestinians did a better job and their
contributor (Palestinian libraries and Information Association) sent a
comprehensive list of 101 libraries... :)
Maybe someone at the National Library of Israel or ASMI (the Israeli librarians
organization) would pick this up.

Hello all,
I noticed several weeks ago that IFLA's Library Map of the World
(https://librarymap.ifla.org/) records Israel as having one library. (In
contrast, Palestine is recorded as having 101 libraries.) I emailed IFLA with a
correction (via this form: https://www.ifla.org/contact/IFLA) but have not
heard back from them. Perhaps some of you, especially the ones in Israel, would
be able to give them more information? I certainly hope this was an oversight
and would appreciate the backup from the rest of you!
Thanks,
