[ha-Safran] JBN article

2018-04-24 Thread Cory Rockliff
Does anyone have the Fall/Winter 1972/3 issue of Judaica Book News
handy, to see what pages an article called “JBN In Dialogue with
Sydney Taylor” is on? Thanks so much!

I have a teacher looking for two documents -- and I have no idea how to find
them.

Lahav, H. (1999). Youth on the fringes of society: The phenomenon, ways of
dealing,
treatment policy for youth at risk and disconnected youth in Israel. Target
populations,
goals, principle and operational methods. The Ministry of Education, Society
and Youth
Administration: Tel Aviv.

Shemesh, A. (2005). A program for prevention and advancement of youth at risk
in schools - based upon the learning and education support model. A proposal
for the Yaniv initiative, internal document. Tel Aviv: The Ministry of
Education, Culture and Sport, Youth and Society Administration, Youth
Advancement Section

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[ha-Safran] a private library event

2018-04-24 Thread Israel Cohen
 A true story:

My father asked me to drive a visiting rabbi to the home of our rabbi. When
we arrived, our rabbi was occupied with another matter and asked that we
wait for him in his study. What does one do while waiting in a rabbi's study?
One looks at the books which fill the shelves on every wall.

I'm looking over the English titles, and the visiting rabbi is looking over
the many Hebrew ones. Suddenly the visiting rabbi pulls a book from the
shelf. He opens it, rapidly scanning from page to page. The color drains
from his face. He is now quite pale and agitated. Gradually he calms down,
the color returns to his face. He slowly closes the book, kisses it, and
replaces it on the shelf. I didn't say anything. After all, he's a rabbi and
(on this occasion) I'm just his chauffeur.

But then it happens again. The visitor pulls another book from the shelf.
Again he flips the pages furiously. Again he becomes pale and seems upset.
And again he regains his composure, kisses the book and puts it back on the
shelf. This time I asked: "Rabbi, what was wrong with that book?"

He smiled and replied: "Nothing. Nothing at all. For a moment I thought he
had one I didn't have."

[ha-Safran] New publication by Magnes Press

2018-04-24 Thread Yael Klein
Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to introduce a new publication by the Hebrew University Magnes
Press:

A Jewish Community in an Arab Town
Beit She'an, 1890-1936

By Reuven
Gafni

book is the first attempt to review the history and the fall of the Jewish
community that existed in Beit She'an from the late 19th century until the
outbreak of the Arab Revolt in 1936. The story of the community, which has been
almost completely forgotten by the public and academic consciousness, is based
on an initial study of several public and local archives, as well as a thorough
study of dozens of primary and secondary sources of various types: press
clippings, academic and autobiographical sources, oral interviews and others.
Beside presenting the history of the community itself, which includes the
unique challenges it experienced during its fifty years of existence and the
organizational and ideological processes which characterized it, the study is
also a base for a better assessment and understanding of the several small
Jewish communities that existed during this period in a number of Arab cities
and towns: Be'er Sheva, Ramle, Nazareth, Samakh, Jericho and others. This is
accomplished by comparing the events in Beit She'an to those which took place
in other communities, while trying to identify the factors that led to the
collapse of these communities during the Mandate period, and to the withdrawal
of the Zionist movement from its substantial support to their continued
existence. The book also deals with different questions of ethnic and national
Jewish identity, the relations between marginal communities and the leading
national institutions, and issues relating to Zionist historiography over the
past century.
