which is training Syrian refugees in traditional stone carving.

Writing for the BBC, Kirsty describes meeting Tony Steel, the 68-year-old
stonemason from Barnsley who has worked on heritage sites all over the world,
and Owais, a trainee learning skills in heritage preservation who dreams of
going back to restore the old souk in Aleppo.

Handmade Quran made with silk fabric at the Turquoise Mountain Foundation in
Mourad Khani. © Turquoise Mountain Trust

38 calligraphers and artisans have recently completed one of the only Qurans
from silk fabric ever made. Lapis, gold and bronze have been used to recreate
delicate 15th and 16th century patterns, and a solution made from the dried
seeds of ispaghula, or psyllium, has been used to stop the ink spreading across
305 metres of fabric.

The Quran has been completed as part of the Turquoise Mountain Trust project
supported by the Fund in Afghanistan. Turquoise Mountain began work in Kabul
with the aim of preserving ancient Afghan craftsmanship, including ceramics,
carpentry and calligraphy.

Read the full article in the Tribune to find out more about the silk Quran, the
craft involved to make it, and the plans for its future.
