Re: [ha-Safran] on today's My Machberet

2019-05-24 Thread Annette Goldsmith via Hasafran
Thank you, Erika! I was moved by Sara Lippman's essay and learned a
delightfully melancholy new word there. "Vellichor," coined by John
Koenig (*The
Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows*), means "the strange wistfulness of used
bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time — filled
with thousands of old books you’ll never have time to read, each of which
is itself locked in its own era, bound and dated and papered over like an
old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex littered with
thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured." Source:

[ha-Safran] publishers for Holocaust memoirs

2019-05-24 Thread Amanda Seigel via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

I've received a few inquiries recently from researchers/writers seeking
publishers for Holocaust memoirs in English.

Amsterdam Publishing, Azrieli Foundaiton (Second Story Press), and Gefen
Publishing are a few of the names I've encountered so far.

Do you have any experience with these publishers, or recommendations?

Please contact me at amandasei...@nypl.org

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Amanda

Hi Daniel,

At Columbia, Art Properties is under the jurisdiction of the Libraries, and
so we have artworks listed in the catalog. You can see a sampling here:
https://clio.columbia.edu/catalog?q=&f%5Bformat%5D%5B%5D=Art+Work+%28Original%29&search_field=all_fields&commit=Search

We have a separate format for it: "Art Work (Orginal)"

[ha-Safran] on today's My Machberet

2019-05-24 Thread Erika Dreifus via Hasafran
Good morning, everyone:

As many of you know, each week I post a collection of "Pre-Shabbat Jewish
Literary Links" on the My Machberet blog. This week's post kicks off with a
magnificent essay by Sara Lippmann (on the popular book-focused site The
Millions) on the dismantling of a Jewish library.

Also in the post: the announcement for the part-time job that AJL is
advertising. And a few other things. Link: https://wp.me/p4x0h8-c3L

Shabbat shalom,

Re: [ha-Safran] First-person accounts

2019-05-24 Thread Yelena Luckert via Hasafran
Hi Anna,

Here are some possibilities:

Elie Wiesel, The Jewish of Silence, 1966
Paul Novick, Jews in the Soviet Union, 1965
Shelomo Even-Shoshan, Sipuro shel masa, Tel Aviv, 1964
Zvi Rudy, Die Juden in der Sowjetunion, 1966
A. Werth, Russia: Hopes and Fears, 1969 (based on several author's
visits).
Sidney Rackoff, "My visit to the USSR," New World Review, v. 40, 1972.
Rackoff was an American Rabbi.
M. Kaufman, "Visit to Russia," Jewish Life, v. 35 (1967).

Hope this helps.

[ha-Safran] Collection of Holocaust ephemera of about 800 items on offer

2019-05-24 Thread Robinson Books via Hasafran

Dear Safranim,

We would like to offer a vast collection of Holocaust ephemera, spanning
around 800 items, consisting of pamphlets, proclamations, photographs,
drawings, posters, letters, postcards, identity cards, etc.

The collection represents Jewish life on the brink of WWII, under Nazi rule,
in ghettos and concentration camps, as well as rescue endeavors, youth
Aliyah, and She'erit ha-pleta in Germany, Poland, Israel, Italy, UK,
Belgium, France, Sweden and the USA.

Among the most notable items in this collection are a 1940 sketch book of
German Jews interned in the Isle of Man, 1943 handwritten piece of
Babylonian Talmud, French Underground Yiddish documents, statement signed by
Belsen Camp commander Kramer, Ketuba from an internment camp in Cyprus, and
more.

To receive the full catalogue of items, please write to us at:
robin...@robinson.co.il

With thanks and good wishes,
