[ha-Safran] Please put locations in subject line when announcing events

2019-09-17 Thread Diane Wolf via Hasafran
It’s wonderful to read about so many interesting programs, etc., on our
listserv.

Sometimes I have to read the entire announcement before learning that the event
is too far away for me to consider.

It would be helpful if we all indicated the location in the subject line. For
those who are job hunting it would also be nice to note the city in the subject
lines for job postings as well.

Thanks for considering this,

Diane

[ha-Safran] New Book

2019-09-17 Thread Jacqueline Benefraim via Hasafran
Shalom,

Here is another Tuesday posting for a new book. Please contact Byron
directly at bryan...@gmail.com if you are interested in this title.

Dear readers,
The new book, “The Girl in the Haystack,” tells the true-life story of an
Atlantic City woman who, as a young Jewish girl in western Ukraine during
World War II, survived a pogrom, the Tuchin ghetto, and nearly two years in
hiding, in haystacks. Key to her survival were a Ukrainian farmer, since
recognized by Yad Vashem, and his dog.
While the book isn’t a children’s book, per se, it reaches middle readers.
Described as “moving and original,” “riveting,” and “historically accurate”
by, respectively, Omer Bartov, Michael Berenbaum, and Modecai Paldiel, the
book is available widely and distributed by:
https://itascabooks.com/the-girl-in-the-haystack/

[ha-Safran] Jewish culture in obsolete formats

2019-09-17 Thread David Zvi Kalman via Hasafran
Hello,

I'm looking to write about aspects of American Jewish culture that are at
risk of being lost because they are locked away on audio cassettes,
records, VHS tapes, and other rarely used media formats. I'm looking for:

(1) examples of significant Jewish media that originally existed in one of
these formats and never made the leap to digital;
(2) any significant collections in an obsolete format that have not yet
been digitized

Thank you!

[ha-Safran] Early modern Hebrew paleography course

2019-09-17 Thread Michelle Chesner via Hasafran
Call for Applications:
EARLY MODERN HEBREW PALEOGRAPHY WORKSHOP, Feb 9-11, 2020

Footprints: Jewish Books through Time and Place, in conjunction with the
Jewish Theological Seminary, invites applicants to participate in a
three-day workshop in New York City devoted to the study of early modern
Hebrew paleography .

This three-day intensive workshop in New York (February 9-11, 2020) will
train students as well as early career scholars of early modern Jewish
history in paleography and the analysis of manuscript annotations in
printed books.

During this workshop, participants will engage in an intensive study of
early modern Ashkenazic Hebrew hands. They will also be introduced to
Footprints provenance project. The first workshop will be led by Dr. Edward
Fram (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev) and will take place in the newly
re-opened rare book room at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Fram is a
specialist in early modern European Jewish history and focuses on Eastern
and Central Europe.

This workshop is the first of a series of sessions for training in reading
handwriting in Hebrew characters from the early modern period. We are
hoping to build a cohort that will participate in webinars and a second
follow-up workshop covering additional scripts in 2020. There is no charge
for the workshop for those accepted to the program. Those accepted should
commit to full attendance for the three days. Participants must also be
willing to become (if they are not already) participants in the Footprints
project as contributors of incidental findings to the database as they do
their own research (trusted scholar-sourcers). For more information on the
Footprints project, see here: https://footprints.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/

Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging, but
subsidies are available for students and early-career scholars as funds
allow. Kosher meals will be provided during the workshop. Space is limited.

Support for this workshop and training program has been provided by the
American Academy of Jewish Research, Rare Book School, Columbia University
Libraries, the Center for Jewish Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, the
Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, Fordham's Center for
Jewish Studies, the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia
University, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Program in Jewish Studies
at Princeton University, and the Ben Zion and Baruch Michah Bokser Memorial
Fund.

To apply, please send a brief letter of interest including current and
future research projects; and a current CV. Those requesting subsidies
should also send an itemized budget for travel and lodging, including other
funds available and applied for. Graduate students, please list the name
and e-mail for one reference. Send material (and questions about the
program) to: footpri...@columbia.edu

Deadline for applications: Friday October 11.

[ha-Safran] large collection looking for a home - may include money to prep a space

2019-09-17 Thread Karen Ulric via Hasafran
We were contacted by a person looking for a home for their father's personal
collection of materials, much of which is Judaic.
Please see the information below, and contact Hillel Felman directly if you
have questions.
--

My father who is a retired dermatologist, was also an ABD in Jewish Studies at
Columbia. He was more than a little of a Hebraist and general bibliophile, and
has a large personal library of about 15,000 volumes. He also took many
courses at JTS. He is moving and is looking to donate it.. Everything is in
good to excellent condition. As he actually recently moved, the collection is
now in storage in Howard Beach, NY.

The Hebrew volumes are mostly academic, religious texts, and Hebrew literature.
They are about 20% of the total. Some of the academic ones would be especially
expensive.

The English ones are mostly English literature, and non-fiction, like history,
of some sort or another.

I thought it would be very nice if there was some way that this collection
could be preserved and donated to a Jewish institution, perhaps being a room of
its own, under his name. Were it necessary, but also sufficient for that
purpose, perhaps the a donation could include 25-50k for such a room, I haven't
broached that yet. However, I meant to first inquire if there might be a
possibility for such a donation to this, or some other institution in the US.
If not, perhaps you might now of some other possible institution here or abroad.

Thank you for any assistance.

Sincerely,
Hillel Felman

[ha-Safran] CCLI 2020 | Deconstructing and Reconstructing Assessment - Proposals due 10/22/19

2019-09-17 Thread Anna M Levia via Hasafran
We'll greatly appreciate it if you'll post the following to your member
listserv.
For anyone interested in the issues inherent in library instruction at all
levels: a high-quality, single day conference to be held in May, 2020 in San
Francisco.
Call for Proposals
California Conference on Library Instruction 2020
Deconstructing and Reconstructing Assessment

In 2020, the California Conference on Library Instruction seeks to explore the
intersection of information literacy and assessment. At its best, assessment
provides us with data to make informed decisions. Assessment can be aimed at an
individual level, across library services, or for institutional learning
outcomes. However, valid questions have been raised about the value and
inherent bias of emerging and established assessment methods. For example,
technological solutions have been playing an increasing role to aid in
retention efforts and track student success, but these methods raise concerns
around patron privacy.

The California Conference on Library Instruction invites you to submit a
proposal for the 2020 program, to be held Friday, May 29, 2020, at the
University of San Francisco.

Examples of specific questions that proposals could address include:

  * Can assessment be both engaging and useful? How do you use the results to
create change? How are you using assessment to inform your instruction or your
instruction program?

  * How are you addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in your
assessment? What critiques of assessment have influenced your approach?

  * How do you adapt your assessment methods for different students and
institutional environments?

  * How do online learning environments and user privacy concerns impact
assessment?

These are just a few ideas of what we are hoping to showcase at CCLI 2020. We
welcome any and all interpretations of the above suggested questions.

Please submit a proposal for one of the following formats: 60-minute
presentation or panel discussion, 75-minute active learning workshop, or 5-7
minute lightning talk. We recommend that prospective presenters review our
evaluation rubric for presentations and workshops at:
http://bit.ly/ccli2020rubric. Proposals should relate to the conference theme,
clearly outline the session, and be timely and applicable to librarians. For
presentations and workshops, please also include 2-3 learning outcomes, as well
as details on how you plan to incorporate active learning into your session.
Please submit your CCLI 2020 proposal at: http://bit.ly/ccli2020cfp.

The deadline for submissions is October 22, 2019. We appreciate your
consideration and look forward to hearing from you! Please visit
http://www.cclibinstruction.org/ for additional information. For questions,
contact CCLI Chair Matthew Collins at
colli...@usfca.edu or (415) 422-6923, or CCLI
Speakers Subcommittee Chair William Cuthbertson at
