[ha-Safran] Reminder: RAS Roundtable on Digital Resources (Tuesday, October 6)

2020-10-05 Thread Amalia S. Levi via Hasafran
Thanks to all those who have already registered for tomorrow's members-only
roundtable. You still have time to register to join the discussion
tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6. Times: 9:30 am PST; 12:30 pm EST; 5:30 pm
BST; 7:30 pm Israel. The roundtable will be moderated by Haim Gottschalk
(Library of Congress).

Here is what we will be discussing:
At the AJL 2010 conference in Seattle, the keynote speaker, Dr. Joseph
Janes (University of Washington) remarked that while in the past people had
to physically go to the information they were seeking by going to the
library, today the library is available 24/7 and the information comes to
them. This RAS Roundtable will focus on digital resources. We explore
various facets especially its impact on collection development and
management.

Some general questions to help guide the discussions are:
1.In considering digital resources, would your library also acquire the
print edition or not - Why and why not?

2.Considering Open Access - a. What are the challenges of identifying
and maintaining OA resources? b. In the event that some journals are not
maintained and vanish, is there a back-up plan to replace these journals in
your library?

3.A philosophical question - the relationship between user/patron and
information - a. Do you think that digital resources has impacted that
relationship or not? b. If we were to compare digital resources to the
introduction of the multi-layer text of the Talmud (Soncino or Bomberg),
would you say the impact is similar or different?

Looking forward to seeing you and to the discussion.
Regards,
Amalia S. Levi
RAS President

Hi Everyone,

We had an excellent lecture given by Dr. Kathy Aron-Beller: UNCOVERING SECRET
JEWISH LIFE IN THE TRIAL TRANSCRIPTS OF THE PORTUGUESE INQUISITION. Kathy is
our Scholar in Residence on a number of our tours including the ones to
Portugal. Portugal was our last tour which took place this year and Kathy took
us back there via her stories and photos which was wonderful. She really gave
us insight to the Cryto Jewish community via the trial transcripts of the
Portuguese Inquisition.

Our upcoming lectures are:

Wednesday, October 7 at 6 pm Israel time: WOMAN OF VALOR: IMAGES AND OBJECTS OF
THE SEPHARDI WOMAN IN MOROCCO, Prof. Shalom Sabar

Shalom Sabar is a Professor Emeritus of the Dept of Art History and Jewish
Folklore of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Shalom has been our amazing
scholar in residence on many of our tours throughout many years. Shalom has
introduced us all to the wonderful culture, art and folklore of so many Jewish
communities throughout the world. His wonderful enthusiasm has rubbed off on
everyone who listens to him! He has been our Scholar in Residence on our
fabulous tours to Morocco.

Tuesday, October 13th at 6 pm Israel time: ANCIENT CAPITALS OF IRAN AND THE
JEWISH CONNECTION, Dr. Thamar E. Gindin

Dr. Thamar E. Gindin is Israel's first cultural attaché in free Iran, and
until Iran is free, she builds bridges between the Iranian and Israeli nations,
opening eyes on both sides to see the other side is just like us, with some
fascinating differences. She does it by writing books, articles and posts,
media appearances in Hebrew, English and Persian, podcasts, a blog and of
course - lectures. She is currently a research fellow in Ezri Center in Haifa
University.

Tuesday, Oct 20th at 6 pm Israel time: YOUR LOYAL SUBJECTS: NATIONAL PORTRAIT
GALLERY, LONDON, Rachel Kolsky

Rachel Kolsky was our wonderful guide on our tour to England last year. She is
a popular prize-winning London Blue Badge Tourist Guide. Focusing on the 'human
stories behind the buildings' Rachel's talks are known to be fun and
informative filled with anecdotes past and present. From off-the-beaten track
London and famous personalities to cinemas and shopping, memories of all
aspects of London's rich and varied social history come flooding back. Before
embarking on her career as Guide and Lecturer, Rachel, a qualified librarian,
worked as an information professional in the financial services industry for
over 25 years. Rachel has published five books including Jewish London (2012),
Whitechapel in 50 Buildings (2016) and Women’s London (2018) and she is
thrilled to have been a guest lecturer on cruises since 2009.

When paying for a lecture on PayPal.me/JHSeminars,
you should write in the note below the payment which lecture/s it is for. Each
lecture costs USD 12. If you did not do so, please email me to let me know
which lecture the payment is for. PLEASE NOTE: When signing up for a lecture,
please check if you have received the link to the lecture at least 12 hours
prior (and not at the last minute). Sometimes the email goes to spam or junk
mail. I send the links twice (one two days prior and another one the day
before).

If you have Facebook, please LIKE our page: Jewish Historical Seminars.

Also visit our website:
www.JewishHistoricalSeminars.com to
see what the upcoming lectures will be.

As I mentioned previously, people have emailed me asking if our lecture series
are only for people who have traveled with us or if they can pass on our
information to others. Definitely PASS ON our information to friends, family
and your community and have them email me directly to be put on our mailing
list! I really would like enlarge the number of people who would could enjoy
joining the lecture and also learning about Jewish Historical Seminars.

A wonderful idea is that one can give a friend or family member a gift by
registering him/her for a lecture or two and having them visit a museum, a
special town or learn about a different community or culture...

Looking forward to seeing you all at the lectures!

Best regards,

Debbie

[ha-Safran] A new dictionary of Hebrew nouns and adjectives, by Prof. Shmuel Bolozky

2020-10-05 Thread Oren Mass via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

We are happy to announce that we have just published in English a new
dictionary of Hebrew nouns and adjectives, *DICTIONARY OF HEBREW NOUNS*, by
PROF. *SHMUEL BOLOZKY*, who is known by his book "*501 Hebrew Verbs*", and
other important books.

*Rubin Mass publishers**, Jerusalem,* *ISBN 978-965-09-0360-2, 828 pages,
2020*

.

The dictionary is arranged by close to 1,000 patterns (*mishkalim* as well
as linearly-derived ones), and the indices (one by pattern, the other
alphabetical) cover about 14,000 entries that are not obsolete today. Each
pattern is accompanied by short grammatical explanations, some sentences
illustrating the pattern in context, related special expressions, and some
additional entries.

We intend to handle two separate versions- a printed version which is
already available by us (and in about a month also by Amazon), and at the
end of 2020 – an online version (on Amazon as well). In the meantime, one
can look up some additional information and a sample pattern, as well as
acquire a copy – see the link below:
