Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish history videos for children

2022-10-23 Thread Erika Dreifus via Hasafran
Hi, Annette:

With the caveat that these are not videos I have *used* in my teaching (I
work with older students), here are some possibilities for you to consider:

On the younger side: BimBam
(https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bimbam.com/__;!!KGKeukY!2vCSK52wWE2gTksQyl-kicRn24yiwSZC_roKzYhwsIA9vyDqZGW7zdQUd-GqIVmPVzLFPiPN1SpbwLw7PG1Y-vMPTs1tCA$
  ).
On the older side: Jewish Unpacked
(https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://jewishunpacked.com/videos/__;!!KGKeukY!2vCSK52wWE2gTksQyl-kicRn24yiwSZC_roKzYhwsIA9vyDqZGW7zdQUd-GqIVmPVzLFPiPN1SpbwLw7PG1Y-vNMhIAnLQ$
  ).

Facing History and Ourselves has an abridged/classroom-ready version of the
film *Who Will Write Our History?* (about the Warsaw Ghetto/Ringelblum
Archive:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.facinghistory.org/resource-library/watching-who-will-write-our-history__;!!KGKeukY!2vCSK52wWE2gTksQyl-kicRn24yiwSZC_roKzYhwsIA9vyDqZGW7zdQUd-GqIVmPVzLFPiPN1SpbwLw7PG1Y-vOc5wFV_Q$
  )
that they say is appropriate for grades 7-12, so while it may work for the
12-year-olds in your group, it's likely too much for the youngest kids. (I
am a huge fan of this film and use the unabridged version with my
undergrads.)

Good luck!

All best,
Erika

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish history videos for children

2022-10-23 Thread Annette Goldsmith via Hasafran
Thanks so much, Erika! I think the more cartoony vibe of BimBam is what I
need. For example, I can use How Did Judaism Get Its Name?
 (4:17) to show the
changing borders of Israel and Judah and the various conquering powers.
I've seen this type of animation showing the different empires swooping in
on videos elsewhere, but accompanied by overly-complicated narration --
it's much more child-friendly here.

The Unpacked videos I watched were too old for my group, but I'll check
again and see if there are younger ones that I've missed. If anyone on the
listserv can recommend specific Unpacked Jewish history videos that would
work for 8-12 year olds, please let me know.

I've seen the unabridged *Who Will Write Our History* and will definitely
watch the abridged version out of personal interest (thanks for the
recommendation!), but I agree that it will probably be too much for the
kids I have in mind.

Thanks again!
Annette
