Re: [ha-Safran] Sad News

2022-10-25 Thread Jacqueline Benefraim via Hasafran
Hello Elliott,

I am shocked and saddened. By Arielle’s passing. She was a pleasure to work
with. She edited some of AJL’s YouTube recordings. She wanted to do more for
AJL, but her health didn’t allow it.

Barukh Dayan Emet,

[ha-Safran] Sad News

2022-10-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Last night, I got the very sad, shocking news that Arielle Sokol, a former
colleague in the Near East Division, Area Programs in the Graduate Library
at the University of Michigan and AJL member, recently passed away, a most
untimely passing.

For about five years, Arielle assisted me in developing and cataloging
materials in the Judaica collections of the Judaica unit and Jewish
Heritage Collection (in the Special Collections Library). Arielle was a
very hard worker who was self-directed and loved the work, especially in
the JHC, which is both a print and object collection. She wanted nothing
more than to get a permanent position working with Judaica in special
collections and/or archives as a librarian or archivist after she had
completed her Masters in Information Science at U-M. After graduation and
finishing up her job in the Library, Arielle moved to Colorado and worked
primarily in the field of music for which she had a special talent.

I received the news from a fellow participant in Itsik Mager's *"Purim
shpil"* in which Arielle and I and several others performed a few years ago
in the Ann Arbor Jewish Community Center. She had a beautiful singing
voice and was a gifted musician. I was planning to call her just a couple
of days ago. We had spoken and did a Google Meet a few months ago. How sad
to not be able to share that experience with her ever again.

As fellow New Yorkers, we also both shared a passion for the New York
Yankees. She once told me how she attended a game at Fenway Park, home of
the archrival Boston Red Sox, and got her brother and his girlfriend to
wear Yankee regalia in that very hostile anti-Yankee environment! Even
when I attended games there many years ago, I was very subtle about my
Yankee fandom, so I admire her bold, somewhat "crazy" actions in the enemy
den! But one thing anyone who knew her can attest to, Arielle was never
reticent about her views!

More information from her friends and colleagues at the InterHarmony
International Music Festival where she was an Assistant the past two years:

Such a vibrant and unique personality taken from us much too soon. May her
memory be for a blessing.

In sorrow,
Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] [EXTERNAL] book on the "Yiddish/Hebrew debate"

2022-10-25 Thread Jesse Abelman via Hasafran
Not sure this is exactly the book they are thinking of but Liora Halperin's
Babel in Zion is about how Zionists pushed for Hebrew and against a
multi-lingualism that included Yiddish alongside other languages in mandatory
Palestine.

[ha-Safran] AJL Synagogue Libraries Slack Workspace

2022-10-25 Thread Paula Breger via Hasafran
Dear AJL-Member Synagogue Librarians,

At the conference "Birds of a Feather" session, we discussed streamlining
communications among synagogue librarians. Creation of a Slack workspace was
proposed, and the new AJL Synagogue Libraries Slack workspace is now available!

For those who are new to Slack, here's a quick-start guide:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://slack.com/help/articles/360059928654-How-to-use-Slack--your-quick-start-guide__;!!KGKeukY!2N9CjHcBHdXrGqRzpvOw8TBZVcrFpfSY_iZPgMC1-YQordrAFFzrdiObgPxlJ-i3eacWxbrFIyJXkBBfDlMF5SLfHCLoZ7hDEsYnfwA$

You can access Slack via Mac and Windows applications, web browsers, and mobile
apps.

In addition to Slack's default #general and #random channels, I've created
channels for accreditation, archivists, classification, collection development,
and development. New channels can be created at any time as topics arise, and
you can join as many as interest you.

If you are an AJL-member synagogue librarian and are interested in joining the
Slack workspace, please reach out to me directly (offlist) at
libr...@templeemanu-el.org and I'll send you
an invitation. Be sure to use the email address you want to use with Slack.

See you in the workspace!

Paula Breger

[ha-Safran] Free Online Event with Posen Library and the Maltz Museum

2022-10-25 Thread Pamela Turner via Hasafran
Register now for next month's free event with the Maltz Museum.

*Part of "Creating a Movement" Series! ** Behind the Camera: The
Photographers of This Light of Ours (Online)*

*November 18 | 12 pm | Free*

Join Dr. Deborah Dash Moore, Editor in Chief of the Posen Library of Jewish
Culture and Civilization as she explores photographs featured in the
special exhibition, This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil
Rights Movement, and the photographers who risked everything to take them.

Photographers like Bob Adelman, Maria Varela, and Matt Heron weren’t just
journalists, they were artists and they were activists, using their cameras
to document moments that would become historical records of what happened
during Freedom Summer in 1964 and beyond. A fascinating discussion for
anyone who is interested in photography, journalism, and/or the Civil
Rights Movement.
