[ha-Safran] JBI Posting

2023-01-09 Thread Livia Thompson via Hasafran
Good morning. This is what I would like to have posted if you agree:

My name is Livia Thompson, and I am the president of JBI (Jewish Braille
Institute). While we serve a national, even international patron base, we are
located in New York City. We are new members of JBI and delighted to join such
a wonderful group. I wanted to (re) introduce you all to JBI and to share some
of our work with you. At the end, you will also see some questions that I
have. I am also happy at any time to answer questions about who we are and
what we do.

Since 1931, JBI has been helping blind, visually impaired, and reading disabled
individuals of all ages and backgrounds to participate fully in Jewish life and
learning. The JBI Library provides books, periodicals, liturgical materials and
more in Braille, Audio, and Large Print formats, all free of charge and
delivered to patrons' doorsteps worldwide.

JBI is an essential resource for students with visual impairment or print
disability who are trying to obtain a Jewish education, participate in holiday
celebrations, learn Hebrew, become Bar/Bat Mitzvah and be active participants
in the Jewish community. Parents, grandparents and educators turn to JBI to
produce printed textbooks, other educational materials, Torah and Haftorah
portions for Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration and much more into Braille, Audio, or
Large Print format on a customized, as requested basis.

Today, there is a growing population of older adults faced with age-related
vision diseases such as macular degeneration, for whom Jewish interest Talking
Books and periodicals and Large Print materials can restore the lifelong
pleasure of "reading" and enable them to stay connected to their communities
and heritage. We also provide bi-monthly compilations of magazine and
newspaper articles, and a cultural series, a wide variety of Haggadahs and
other liturgical materials, and Jewish calendars. All of this in multiple
formats and languages and can be sent to our patrons free of charge.

JBI is thrilled to be partnering with PJ
Library to create accessible versions of children's books celebrating Jewish culture
and values in Braille, Large Print and Audio formats. This collaboration will
make possible the inclusion of visually impaired and print disabled children in
the PJ Library program and provide a means for visually impaired parents and
grandparents to read to their sighted children/grandchildren. Families can
order a print version with Braille transparency overlaying the text, or with
Large Print or Audio accompaniment. Whatever the need, this program makes
cross-generational reading together possible through different accessibility
options.

For more information about any of JBI's free services, please contact me or
anyone can call 1-800-433-1531 or visit
https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.jbilibrary.org__;!!KGKeukY!xcXjO5PohhhDzizDYam6CANcZbwVPhBqTHBAIkJzPYoKBDRJYkOnhqXTE54at_8dkcUdVUJrQnH35BjOaJNJbOrv8dPPZhlb5Mcl5c0$

. JBI's librarians will be happy to help.

We are also very interested in hearing from you about any patrons you have
tried to serve who are blind, visually impaired or print disabled, and what
specific materials and books you think would be most helpful to them, and any
other feedback and input you can give us about what you think, from your
vantage point, would be most useful for us to concentrate on. Many thanks for
any advice and suggestions. We also welcome lists of children's books that you
think we should be recording, brailling, or developing a large print format for.

JBI would be interested in setting up a zoom meeting to go over these
questions, answer any questions you have, and share more about us. If there is
any interest, we will find a time for our librarian will be part of the
discussion.

Thank you all very much in advance,

Livia
