Bruchie, thank you very much for this lovely and moving tribute to Rachail
Kurtz A"H. Rachail was a consummate librarian: knowledgeable, and always
happy to generously share that knowledge in the kindest way. She was a
wonderful mentor, and she is sorely missed.

Than you so much for such an informative AJL Conference.
I would like to acknowledge the “Petira”, passing, of one of our own- Rachail
Kurtz- this past January. She was an active member of AJL and NYMA for many
years and I felt that a mention of both her warm personality and a small
sampling of her accomplishments was warranted.

Rachail Kurtz was the head librarian at Yeshivah of Flatbush HS, after having
been librarian at the Magen David Yeshivah elementary school. As a high school
librarian she led book clubs, coached teams, instituted new programs, planned
and executed school wide Book Day, and helped plan and organize their stunning
new library.
On a personal level, Rachail was my roommate and often fellow presenter at AJL
conferences, my partner at workshops, my erstwhile leader as chairperson of AJL
Accreditation Committee, my predecessor as NYMA Reference Workshop Chair, my
professional “sister” librarian, my sounding board, my colleague, my confidant,
and, always, my friend. Rachail was calm and considerate to a fault, genuine,
kind, fine- as well as brilliant, amazingly competent, productive, innovative,
hard working and excellent at her job. But most of all, she loved her family.
Her children were the most important thing to her- everything from their
schooling, to their
shidduchim, to making the house beautiful for all of them,— and she doted on
the grandchildren. So add to all the attributes- she was an exemplary mother
and grandmother and no doubt wife.
She was an exemplary person. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

[ha-Safran] 47th Anniversary of Mivtsa Yonatan, Flora Photos and Happy Birthday America

2023-06-27 Thread Jacob Richman via Hasafran
Hi Everyone!

On June 27 1976, an Air France flight from Tel-Aviv to Paris via Athens
was hijacked and forced to land in Entebbe, Uganda.
The Jewish passengers were separated and held hostage in demand
to release many terrorists held in Israeli prisons.
After much debate, the Israeli government sent an elite commando unit
to raid the airfield and release the hostages. The commando unit,
aircraft crews and the rescued hostages landed in Israel on July 4, 1976.
Yonatan Netanyahu, the commander of the first aircraft´s Sayeret Matkal rescue
unit,
was shot and killed while helping hostages return to the aircraft.

"Operation Entebbe" was later named "Operation Yonatan" in honor
of Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Netanyahu z"l.

I created a page with images, newspaper headlines, videos
and articles about the historic Israeli rescue.
jr.co.il/mivtsa-yonatan.htm

May the memory of Yoni Netanyahu be for a blessing,
--
Today, I took a long walk in Ma'ale Adumim
and took photos of flora. I posted them at:
jr.co.il/ma/pic/2023/ma1533.htm
Enjoy the photos!
--
In honor of the United States of America Independence Day,
I created a page with 13 unique videos and 10 cool USA maps.

Enjoy!

Please share the pages. Thank you!

Happy 4th of July! Happy Birthday America!
Happy Entebbe Day!

[ha-Safran] Upcoming AJL Virtual Events

2023-06-27 Thread Paula Breger via Hasafran
Books About Books: The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf with Dr. Marat Grinberg
Wednesday, July 19, 2023
10:00 am PT / 1:00 pm ET / 8:00 pm Israel Time

The study of Soviet Jewish culture and collective psyche presents a fascinating
yet still little-known subject of inquiry. Frequently subject to quotas and
varying degrees of discrimination, Soviet Jews still participated fully within
the larger society. Most were secular, with Russian as their native or primary
tongue, and with no or very little knowledge of Judaic practice, which the
state firmly opposed. Without spaces to gather or material culture to hold on
to, cultural memory, practices, and thought were formed and disseminated on the
page, often “between the lines.” In this environment, where Judaism had been
all but destroyed and a public Jewish presence routinely delegitimized, reading
provided many Soviet Jews with an entry to communal memory and identity. Marat
Grinberg’s talk, based on his recent book, The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf: Jewish
Culture and Identity Between the Lines, will explore the texts that Soviet Jews
kept in their home libraries, from historical fiction to translations from
German, Yiddish, and Hebrew to Russian novels with subterranean context to
science fiction, and help to uncover the originality and central dimensions of
Soviet Jewishness.

This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is open to members only.
All members are welcome.

Dear, Dear Racheli,

A bit belatedly, but I would like to congratulate you on your very
well-deserved recognition by AJL. The session in which you spoke was one of
only two that I could get into the Zooms, and I am grateful for that. You
spoke very movingly. I well remember your
first years at the conferences and knew that your contributions would be
excellent and they have been. Kol ha-kavod and may you go from strength to

With all good wishes and MAZAL TOV,

Yours,

while following your interesting mailing list for quite a while, today I would
