A friend is looking for a book about the Torah portions of the week that is
unique.
Each portion is written by a different Jewish person to his/her knowledge.  She
remembers one commentary was written by an architect..  She bought it about ten
years ago and used it as a gift and would like to get another copy.
Does that ring a bell to anyone?
Thanks in advance,
Happy new year loazi!

[ha-Safran] Books Needed for the Emerging Jewish communities in Nigeria

2023-12-28 Thread Rachel Kamin via Hasafran
PLEASE SEE MESSAGE BELOW FROM RABBI HOWARD GORIN AND RESPOND TO HIM DIRECTLY AT
hdgori...@gmail.com:

Are you looking to deaccession or downsize your library? The emerging Jewish
communities in Nigeria would welcome your books.

* Basic Judaism / Introductions to Judaism (practices, values, history,
etc.)

*   Chumashim (Hebrew/English) - Artscroll/Stone, Etz Hayim, UJR, Hertz -
the JPS Torah Commentary

*   Chumash with Rashi (Hebrew/English)

*   Torah Commentaries - e.g., Artson's Bedtime Torah, Frankel's The Five
Books of Miriam

*   Siddurim (ArtScroll is preferred)

* Tanakhim (Hebrew/English or English only)

* Soncino Press - Tanakh, Talmud, Midrash, Zohar

* Overviews of World Jewish History (histories of specific communities
are not as useful)

*   Kittzur Shulchan Arukh (Hebrew/English); books on the 613 Mitzvot;
books on minhagim; etc.

* Musar - Mesilat Yesharim, Orchot Tzaddikim, etc. - and Jewish ethics

* Books on Israel and Zionism

* Books to counter missionaries' arguments

The intended recipients are earnest but their Hebrew knowledge, for the most
part, is still developing. Their outlook is what we might call Orthodox.

2023-12-28 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
Thank you all for the responses to a book on Parashot ha Shavua written by
a variety of authors including architects, musicians, etc.

I was delighted that one of you found the book for my friend. It is called*
Unscrolled: 54 Writers and Artists Wrestle with the Torah* by Roger Bennett.

Again, thank you to all that replied.

2023-12-28 Thread Barry Dov Walfish via Hasafran
Dear Safranim,

I would like to bring to your attention the Karaite Press of the Karaite
Jews of America, which has been producing original works and translations
of medieval and early modern Karaitica for the last couple of decades. Here
is the website:
TheKaraitePress.com
. I would encourage you to
support this noble enterprise by adding these titles to your collections.
The books are reasonably priced and deserve to be in libraries.
The most recent books are currently on sale in a bundle for 33% off. (See
screenshot). You just need to click on any one of those books and the
bundle will display.
For more details, please be in touch with Shawn Lichaa, who runs the press:
i...@thekaraitepress.com.
All the best for 2024,
Barry
