It isn't every day that archiving makes news in publications aimed at the

[ha-Safran] Need Help Cataloging Synagogue Library

2020-07-08 Thread Association of Jewish Libraries via Hasafran
*Shalom AJLers,*

*I received the following request for help in cataloging a synagogue
library. Please respond directly to either Adam or Phillip.*

*Let's show them Down Under that we are the leading authority on Judaic
librarianship,*

*Jackie*

Shalom Jackie -
Thank you for getting back to me so promptly. To answer your questions:
1. The library belongs to the synagogue and survives from donations from
people's personal library.
The content is historical, fictional and non-fictional, Judaism, Shoah,
Shalom Aleichem, etc.
Approximately between 1,000 and 2,000 books, classed primarily as "Adult"
and "Children".

2. Please feel free to post my email to your membership, as what I require
is a reference file that will expedite the catalogue processing of the
books. Approx 500 are yet to be classified, so trying to automate as much
as possible.
Any assistance re online searches, best library software to use, etc. might
also come from the forum.
I really appreciate the effort you have gone to.
I have taken the liberty to cc Phillip Zavelsky ,
who is the driver behind this library effort.
All the best and Shabbat Shalom from Australia,
Adam

Shalom Adam,

Jewish IT guy doing this on my own time. They are using EXCEL on an
antiquated system, and manually use "A Classification System for Libraries
of Judaica". Is there a CSV file I can download to assist them in
cataloguing in a quicker manner,e.g. "Lookups"? I will do all the computer
work - I just need the reference file to do this. Please advise - as I am
doing this for free.

[ha-Safran] Private Judaica Library Giveway near Boston

2020-05-19 Thread Association of Jewish Libraries via Hasafran
*Shalom,*

*Please respond to Mr. Townsend directly to his email: **w...@alum.mit.ede I
am not sure if he would be willing to give a portion of the collection to
one institution and some other titles to another. The important thing is
that we don't leave behind any books that should be placed in a geniza if
they are not acquired. Mr. Towsend is aware of the need to place items in a
geniza, but he is not qualified to decide which ones.*

My dad, John T. Townsend, was an ordained Episcopalian minister who became
an expert in ancient biblical languages and translations from different
points in time (where, for example, there were subtle differences in
grammar that helped date the original scrolls).

We joked that he was a closet Jew. He bragged that 11 of his doctoral
students converted to Judiasiam after taking his courses. (I was told this
story by the rector of his church who didn't think that was something
to brag about.) We lived in Israel for a year when I was 6 years old (I
can still beg for ice cream in hebrew) in 1967 (just before the war). My
dad sharpened his knowledge of Hebrew there. Later in his career, he was
also interested in supporting better Jewish-Christian relations. So, while
most of his books relate to his research in Judaism, some may be on
Jewish-Christian relations.

I went over to his house today to take some photographs to give you a rough
gage of the condition of the books as well as to measure the linear shelf
length of the entire collection since my ~10,000 number was a
back-of-envelope guess. It turns out that there are 453 feet of books. I
took some photos and uploaded them to my company website, which you can
retrieve as a zip file at https://web.barrett.com/temp/Townsend_Library.zip

[ha-Safran] Free Book of Short Stories

2020-05-01 Thread Association of Jewish Libraries via Hasafran
Shalom,

While I seem to only be busier working from home, some people are searching
for free reading materials.
I received this book offer from Larry Lefkowitz

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/937372

He shared with me the following:
The stories are traditional as a well as modern. A retelling of the
creation of the golem of Prague, A man so caught up in a discussion of
Torah on a Jerusalem bus that he follows them off the bus in order not to
lose the thread, forgets his baskets for Shabbat and just makes it home in
time for Shabbat. A story about a piano-tuner in Vienna before World War
Two who ignores a warning to leave in time but years later is discovered in
Israel when his tuning theme is heard by the man who warned him to leave.

[ha-Safran] Help with Weine Classification System

2019-10-27 Thread Association of Jewish Libraries via Hasafran
*I received the following question via our website, please reply to Martin
directly.*

Dear Sir or Madam,

As a volunteer member, I am trying to catalog about 400 books, all on
Jewish related subjects, donated to the library of Temple B’nai Torah,
Bellevue, WA. I have read through the “Weine Classification Scheme and
Relative Index”, 9th edition, enough to believe I might take 40 years to
get though this stack! Does an on-line index exist such that I could get
the Weine Classification by referencing a book title or number, perhaps an
ISBN? I would appreciate your suggestions. I am not a librarian by
training..

Sincerely,

Hello –

I am looking for a place to donate a wide variety of books—from prayer
books in Hebrew to novels by authors such as Chaim Potok and Philip Roth.
Some of the books are rather old and likely out of print.

I am located in Bergen County and would be happy to drop them off in this
vicinity.

Do you know of any libraries or organizations that accept donations of used
books?

Thank you for your assistance –

Karen Karlin
