One year we did Casablanca, and it was a great hit. A large number of the
actors were Holocaust escapees.

We are resurrecting our once popular "Chinese Dinner & a Movie" event this year
on December 22. I am looking for a light, fun film to show at the synagogue
that will appeal to a mostly older crowd of empty-nesters, active retirees and
seniors. Could be a feature film or a documentary; comedy or something in the
"edu-tainment" category; Jewish content but NOT Holocaust; preferably in
English but sub-titles are OK too. In the past we showed Dreaming of a Jewish
Christmas, Fiddler, Dough and Land of Milk & Honey. We also showed The New Jew
during the pandemic and that was a hit so an episode or two from a series could
work as well. We don't want to conflict with our local JCC and Israeli film
festivals so I'm thinking maybe there is an older/classic film that would be
fun to revisit.

Please let me know if you have any "tried & true" suggestions that fit the
above requirements for this event.

Thanks!

Re: [ha-Safran] [EXTERNAL] - book club revamp

2021-03-16 Thread Brown, Joyce J. via Hasafran
I coordinate the book club for my group. Most of the Jewish themed titles come
from the Jewish Book Council recommendations. We are trying to include Jewish
authors not necessarily on any lists (Andrew Gross for example), as well as
different genres – memoir, biography, and some history. We vote on the titles
and it seems to work.

Hi!

My Jewish young professionals book club is looking into ways to diversify our
readings. I have heard of book clubs that assign monthly themes ahead of time
so not all books are about the Holocaust or not all books are 'chicklit.'
(These are the two biggest recurring themes in our club and it has dissuaded a
few long-time members from attending recently while others of course love these
genres.) I am not in charge of the club, just looking at ways to propose some
changes to retain membership. Each month someone chooses a book and leads a
discussion. It's democratic in that way and I want that to stick, but I would
like to hear about book clubs that consider a rotating theme each month in
their picks (maybe more mizrahi/sephardi stories, Jewish history that is not
the Holocaust, etc.)

If you have best practices for diversifying your book club picks, I would love
to know about them.

Thank you,
Danielle

Re: [ha-Safran] [EXTERNAL] - Books dealing with diversity of the Jewish experience

Our book club loved Marra Gad’s book. It was really revealing, and gave us lots
to discuss.

Collective wisdom,

Our synagogue is looking to do a "one synagogue, one book" type of event. They
are looking at a theme of diversity of Jewish experience. Does anyone have any
suggestions? Could be fiction or non-fiction, but preferably something light
enough for summer reading (yes it is June already!). I am interpreting
"diversity" broadly. Marra Gad's Color of Love and Sue Eisenfeld's Wandering
Dixie were both suggested and seem like decent possibilities.

Thank you for any ideas.
