Re: [ha-Safran] Resources on Jews during European Exploration

2015-08-25 Thread Chavah Carp
Michelle,

I highly recommend a book called "Atlas of Jewish History' by Martin Gilbert.
Although it is set up as an Atlas there is a wealth of information on Jewish
settlement, migration and movement. It is also a great way to teach map reading
skills and children of all ages, especially 3rd and 4th graders love the
interactive lesson of learning through reading these excellent maps. I have
used this book often which was recently reprinted. Chavah

I agree that although the Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean is an excellent
book the reading level and content is far more suitable to middle and high
school. Although if you can hold of the following book, "The Jewish
Traveler: Hadassah Magazine's Guide to the World's Jewish Communities ad
Sights" 1994, edited by Alan M. Tigay you will find great info of Jews
across Europe and even current times information.

I believe the most favorable term that is most used now is Anusim. In hebrew it
mesns coerced (converted Jews by force). That is my $.02. Rabbi Chavah

Re: [ha-Safran] Cuban stories

2015-11-10 Thread Chavah Carp
Tropical Secrets: Holcsust Refugees in Cuba. Written in poetry is a dialogue
between two people Danielle and Paloma. He was escaping Nazi Germany and his
ship is turned away from New York and it was sent to Cuba.
It's a short book and it's written in poetry form but I think it might be
useful for your purposes. Chavsh
