Re: [ha-Safran] Baruch Dayan HaEmet - Jean Lettofsky's passing

2023-11-02 Thread Cheryl Banks via Hasafran
Merrily, Susan, Shoshanah I want to applaud your reflections on the
powerful Jewish women (and men) who were also my heroes and guides when I
joined AJL in the 80's. What a group of dedicated, loving, elegant,
intelligent, and giving people, whose devotion to Judaism and to Jewish
learning was instrumental in guiding my evolution as a Judaica librarian,
and who motivated me to get involved with the national organization. I
feel like everyone is gone too soon, yet much time has passed since those
days.

May Jean's memory, and all of theirs, be for a blessing.

Re: [ha-Safran] The 2020 AJL Conference has been cancelled

2020-03-26 Thread Cheryl Banks via Hasafran
A real shout-out is owed to Rachel Kamin and Marcie Eskin, the local Chairs
of the Chicago conference, who have been working so hard, day and night, to
create a fabulous meeting. As the past chair of the conference, I know how
hard it is to do, and with the help of a small committee in Chicago, and
the national team, these two women have put the lion's share of work into
this. So bravo and yasher koach to Rachel and Marcie, to get the
recognition that they deserve.

[ha-Safran] Jewish Children's books in Spanish??

2017-01-17 Thread Cheryl Banks
Hello all:

I am going to Cuba in a few weeks, and I would like to bring some Spanish
Jewish children's books to the Jewish community there. Does anyone know of
a good vendor for such books, preferably in the U.S.? I know that Alba will
have some in Espania, but I was hoping for some a little closer. For
example, do Kar-Ben books get translated?

Thanks! You can write me off list, to not clutter inboxes.

[ha-Safran] Encyclopedia Judaica

2016-02-12 Thread Cheryl Banks
Anyone know where I might find a good home for the 1972 Encyclopedia
Judaica? I've tried International Prisoners advocate groups. I was
thinking if anyone knew of a small shul or school opening, without the
basics, we could send them there. The thought of "recycling" the paper
makes me nauseous.

Re: [ha-Safran] holocaust book suggestion

2012-08-22 Thread Cheryl Banks
With all due respect, the Boy in the Striped Pajamas is pretty well
recognized as being an inappropriate representation of the Holocaust. It
is aimed, first of all, at younger readers, but it is so unrealistic as to
be discouraged by most Holocaust experts and educators.

That being said, has anyone suggested an obvious book -- Night, by Elie
Wiesel? That should be a standard, in my opinion.
