[ha-Safran] Fwd: Paul Hamburg, z'l

2024-04-19 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Thank you for those heartfelt words, Ruth.

I'd like to add my own note about Paul. We met in the mid-90s, when I was
Librarian at the Bureau of Jewish Education (now Jewish Learning Works). At
that time Paul was a 2nd-career MLS student at UC Berkeley, working at the
Holocaust Center in our building. He then moved to Southern California,
where he worked with Adaire Klein (Z''L) at the Holocaust Museum.

One of his passions was Jewish literature. He spoke several languages and
read a dozen or more. I was always appreciative of his ability to range
widely in Jewish literature, a field he loved.

As co-Chairs of the 2005 AJL Conference, Paul and I met weekly during
the year between the 04 meeting in Brooklyn and our gathering here in
Oakland. I found him a full participant. Along with Zachary Baker, we
created a Bay Area program that included full participation of both UC
Berkeley and Stanford. (Those of you in the academic world will appreciate
that this was a significant feat. The program also included several leaders
in the online world, in addition to our usual wide-ranging panels. It
remains a notable achievement in my life, and it sealed our dedication to
each other.

Re: [ha-Safran] Fwd: Zichrono livracha Norman H. Finkelstein

2024-01-09 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Norm's books should be in every Judaica library. As the lovely obit says,
he filled in lots of the gaps in Jewish history (especially Jewish) for
older children and teens. I hadn't heard about his book on Cahan and the
Forward, but now I'm very much looking forward to it.

He attended at least a few of our conferences over the years. I think he
was a speaker in Boston in '06.

Thank you as always, Heidi.

If anyone is interested in the larger issue of cyber-antisemitism, there's
an NGO that is working on the issues. It's *Cyberwell*. Been in business
for a couple of years and is monitoring a variety of issues. They've been
in conversations with a number of the major providers, and have had some
success.

First, thank you, Gail. You've been a light in our corner of the
profession. I haven't been in R so don't know directly, but our
colleagues have referred to you often.

Next, I'd note that you've organized annual"(?) trips out and around from
our conferences. Wherever we've been for the past 20 years at least, there
has been a car going somewhere.

Finally, you've brightened all of our lives during conferences, when you
weren't at the center of their organizations in DC.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-12 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Circulation numbers are quite fungible, as we all know. A significant
amount of current circ in public libraries is now online. So the numbers
there are up, but the physical objects aren't there.

This leads to the broader topic of digitization. We've been dealing with it
for the past 40 years (first with periodicals), but haven't faced it quite
so directly till now. We now have to ask a somewhat different set of
questions, at all levels.

[ha-Safran] Thanks

2022-09-28 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Thanks to those who wrote with suggestions. The book is
Miriam Bat-Ami -- Two Suns in the Sky.
It's a novel about a boy refugee and a local girl.

And I was mistaken. It was a Notable Book that year. See Pinchuk, p. 159.

[ha-Safran] Book citation

2022-09-27 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Some years ago there was a children's novel (maybe for teens) about a girl
and boy. One of them was interned at the Oswego Refugee Detention Camp
during World War II.

I'm now reviewing a new book (non-fiction) about the camp. Can someone
please remind me of the title, author and year. I don't think it was an STA
book.

Thank you.

Thank you, Heidi. It's a wonderful statement.

I'd go further, in fact. We're all ambassadors for Jewish life. Whether
it's history, music, or a dozen other aspects of Jewish life, we represent
what other Jews can learn and therefore can become.

You have been a shining example of that fact through your 20+ years in AJL.

Re: [ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

2022-03-01 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
This thread raises some interesting issues that haven't been noted.

While lots of movies have been transferred to more current formats and
streaming -- and there's an enormous amount of new material available --
there may be some that are not. And some smaller libraries may not have
funding for streaming services. So while there are legitimate reasons to be
current with our technology, there may also be reasons to keep at least a
few "rare" dvd's.

Re: [ha-Safran] Personal libraries

2022-02-09 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
As someone who has both reviewed collections and donated one (about 1500
volumes), I have a thought:
Those of us in academic libraries talk to our Judaica faculty. Where
are their students being placed? Do those young scholars want to add to
their colleges' libraries? There should be a market for Judaica around the
country, to strengthen smaller departments and new Ph.D.'s in their work.
It could benefit the field at large if we knew where the new programs are,
and how we can help them grow and thrive.

[ha-Safran] Museum question

2022-01-06 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
There was an article in the NY Times a couple of Sundays ago about the new
Jewish museum in New Orleans. I went to the website and the place sounds
intriguing.

Has anyone contacted them? What is their relationship with the Southern
Jewish Historical Society (Peggy Pearlstein has been deeply involved with
them)? With some of the other museums (KKBE in Charleston; Atlanta;
Birmingham?

[ha-Safran] New book from Lerner

2021-12-02 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
All --

This week I received Emily Isler's *AfterMath* (CarolRhoda/Lerner) for
review. It's about a 12-year old in a town that has had a mass school
shooting.

I'm still working out what to say in the review. But in light of the
Oxford, Michigan murders, it has added impact. If you have it, you might
consider where it lives on your shelves. Maybe move it to the Adult fiction
section. The publisher says it's for 5th-8th graders. I think that's
problematic (at best).

Re: [ha-Safran] leaving the AJL universe...

2021-10-12 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
I want to repeat the encouragement to remain connected to AJL. My own
experience is that when people are searching for background and history, as
well as current knowledge, it's always good to have a resource. Your work,
Amy, gives you a unique perspective of the region outside Washington, where
many of our members are.

[ha-Safran] New Book

2021-06-22 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
For those who haven't yet heard:
Helene Wecker published "The Golem and the Jinni" several years ago.
It's a magical story, set mostly in New York around 1900.

Her sequel, "The Hidden Palace" has recently been released. I have it on my
tablet, but haven't seen it widely in stores yet. I assume it will be
available everywhere in the next few weeks.

[ha-Safran] Rabbi's library

2020-08-18 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Our Emeritus Rabbi and his wife (Samuel and Judith Broude) passed away this
past winter. We've acquired their library -- about 55 boxes (neatly
packed). I'm now creating a basic inventory for distribution to local
libraries and dealers. I don't think we'll keep very many items ourselves.
There are no papers here. The family is still reviewing them.

Question: should I include all of the paperbacks as well as the
hard-covers? We don't have many in our collection. And I'm not sure they
have much reading value if they're from the 1970s and '80s.

Thoughts? What have you done in this situation? Thanks.

Re: [ha-Safran] 2020 AJL Conference cancelled

2020-03-30 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Thanks for the reminder, Susan.
SARS hit Toronto particularly hard. My recollection is that we had to
change hotels, and we waited until a bit later than usual to do
registration. But the Conference went on and we all had a great time
(including lots of people going to the Shoe Museum nearby). Maybe Steve
Bergson, Gloria Jacobs or someone else on that Committee can remind us
about it.

Re: [ha-Safran] Fwd: AJL 2020 Conference Update: March 25, 2020

2020-03-27 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
As former Co-Chair (2005) and former Conference VP (2006-10), I echo all
the appreciation for our 2020 team. I know how many details there are, and
I'm truly disappointed that the decision had to be made. At the same time,
I applaud the early process.

A follow-up thought:
I know that conferences have gone virtual. I attended one this past
week that had several sessions and Plenaries online. I don't know what the
cost of streaming on Zoom or another platform would be. But I wonder
whether some sessions could be done that way, without breaking the bank.
Would people donate their Registration fees? What would it cost for those
who couldn't go to Chicago (I had another event close in time) but would
happily pay a fee to join online. Could AJL put on a University site --
Northwestern, e.g.?

What a wonderful Choice. Thanks to the committee, and to Elliot.

Zachary is indeed the consummate professional. I served on the Council
while he was President, and co-chaired the 2005 Conference. He was a
critical part of our small working committee.

Congratulations to you, Zachary.

A fine statement, Dina. Thank you for saying what we all know, and putting
it in the context of the unique place YIVO has in the scholarly world. The
expertise we've lost is breathtaking.

Re: [ha-Safran] Leah Adler

2019-05-05 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Leah was a lovely human being.
We spoke every year at conferences and she was always kind.
She served as a member of the Board and Council and lent her voice quietly,
as she did everything, but with authority.

Re: [ha-Safran] RE that 4,000 book Holocaust collection

2019-01-21 Thread Fred Isaac via Hasafran
Andrea and all --

Some years ago I donated a personal (non-Judaica) collection of about 1500
volumes to an academic library. After that, I wrote an essay about the
process; I delivered it as a conference talk (again, not at AJL) and
published it in a specialty journal. It delineates the steps a donor should
take in order to best serve both him/herself and the organization. i think
it would be useful for anyone (Rabbis, academics, etc.) with sizable
libraries they want to donate.
If anyone wants to see it, I can provide it (in hard copy). It's
about 10 pages.
