[ha-Safran] Why do Ashkenazim not eat qitniot on Passover?

2023-03-16 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
The Ashkenazi prohibition against eating QiTNiot

on Pesach began in FRanCe (a reversal of TZaRFat) in the 1200s. This
prohibition constituted a psycholinguistic distancing of oneself from
GoSHeN, the bean-shaped kidney (< qitniot) on an anthropomorphic map of
Aphrodite (Afro-deity). The ancient shin had a dental D/T-sound, e.g., SHoR
= ox was ToR as in Taurus. The gimel often had a K-sound in other
languages, e.g., GaMaL = camel. So, GoSHeN sounded like QTN, as in QiTNiot
= beans. Cotton (Arabic qutn) was exported from Goshen. The Latin genus for
cotton is Gossypium < Goshen. Compare English gossamer = cotton + sea (the
foam you see on the beach). Aphrodite (< Greek αφρός aphros = foam) was a
goddess in Goshen.
The philosophical question is: If one knows the reason for this
prohibition, are they more or less duty-bound to observe it? I don't know
the answer.

Phoenician anthropomorphic maps covered all of the area involved in the
Exodus from Egypt (< Greek hepat- = liver), so they may be an appropriate
topic for discussion at the seder table. If you want a more complete
description of them, you can download these files from my Dropbox.

Hebrew sometimes reverses a word to produce its antonym. In Genesis 42:
23*, *haMaLiTZ = the
interpreter is a *hapax legomenon*
.
It is a reversal of TZeLeM = picture, image. To translate Egyptian
hieroglyphics to any other language is to un-picture.

The sound changes described in *SoundChangeHandOut *file are relevant to
the other topics in this email.
Utilization of these changes facilitates finding cognates of (Hebrew) words
and phrases.

Does your library have PCs or other equipment that patrons can use to view
or download books? If so, the *Internet Archive* offers only 8,652
Hebrew titles. Books published more than 70 years ago can usually be
downloaded. More recent books can be borrowed online when available. Their
Hebrew books are listed at

As a practical matter, this file should have its own webpage that enables
anyone to view or download the file and upload a request to add (or delete)
an organization to (from) the list. Here's a comment I received from an AJL

I think your idea of AJL having a page devoted to this is perfect.
I think it's an idea you should post on Hasafran for AJL to consider.

Can AJL provide such a page?

[ha-Safran] Publishers of Books with Jewish Content

2022-05-19 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
Hello AJLers --

After editing a manuscript for Prof. Shlomo Giora Shoham
 of Tel Aviv University, the
author asked me to find a suitable publisher. A web search for Jewish Book
Publishers turned up the *AJBP* list

maintained by Avotaynu
. That list has
historical value but it is quite out-of-date so I decided to update it.
Let's call the result the "April 2022" list. Here are some statistics.

*Attribute AJBP April 2022*
Total number of entries 50 107
Number of entries on both lists 19 = 38% 19 = 18%
Number of entries dropped 31 = 62%
Number of entries added 88 = 82%
Has a link to the entry's URL 18 = 36% 104 = 97%
Provides email/webmail address28 = 56% 95 = 89%
Has link to Author Guidelines 0 = 0% 57 = 53%

I sent the new list to every organization on it with a request for feedback
and have made all of the very few requested changes. I have not yet decided
where to store the updated list on the web.
I would want there to be no charge for viewing or downloading the list.
I probably should initiate a separate website for it via WordPress or Wix,
for example.

I did store the April 2022 list as a Word file in my Dropbox. You can
download it and treat it as public domain with or without attribution to
me. The URL for downloading it is:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.dropbox.com/s/60csjntg4kl0rle/Publishers*20of*20Jewish*20Books.docx?dl=0__;JSUl!!KGKeukY!xHl6zlG9Bwa8jjgO0SApjkpuHJkHhktl-bVbZDhPM2fN92NrltI_ysYuQl3crtND5SlBKw2BX-f2mNbrqWCMoVM$

Perhaps I should produce updated Excel files of Jewish-book bloggers and
Jewish book clubs.
Do any of you have a list of Jewish book clubs? or Jewish book bloggers?

Best regards and stay well,
Izzy

Author

Over 40 of the best scholars and archaeologists in the field of Ancient
Israel are coming together — virtually — from October 25 to October 28 in
an international online conference, “The Land that I will Show You: Recent
Archaeological and Historical Studies of Ancient Israel.”

In a feast fit for archaeology enthusiasts of all ages, the topics include
updates from top dig directors on their recent excavations in Israel; new
insights into the region’s prehistorical residents; new discoveries in
Jerusalem; science and technology; synagogues and churches; and archaeology
of Roman period Judaism and Christianity.

The arguable main event is a showdown on October 27 between three of the
most influential biblical archaeologists of our era. In a session called
“The United Monarchy between Image and Reality,” Tel Aviv University Prof.
Israel Finkelstein will go head to head with Hebrew University professors
Amihai Mazar and Yosef Garfinkel. Sparks are sure to fly.

popular interest include “Biblical Incenses: Cannabis and Frankincense at
the Judahite Shrine of Arad” with Eran Arie of The Israel Museum,
Jerusalem, and Dvory Namdar, Agricultural Research Organization, Volcani
Center; a series of lectures on Israelite religion and women; and a talk by
University of North Carolina’s Jodi Magness on “The Huqoq Synagogue
Mosaics: Recent Discoveries.”

[ha-Safran] The meaning of ?????? ToTaFoS

2020-08-23 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
Amalia W wrote:
I have very few resources at home to settle an argument on the meaning of
the word ??
in Deuteronomy Chapter 6 verses 4-10. One said that it means a box and
another said that it is ornament (Even Shoshan) .
I said that it is neither, it is how it was taken literally.

I am guessing that the word whose meaning you are seeking is in Deut 6:8,
tet-tet-feh-sof ToTaFoS.
The JPS translation is "frontlets". The customary translation today is
"phylactery", a Greek word φυλακτήριο of unknown origin that is usually
translated as "amulet, talisman". But the question remains: What was the
meaning of the Hebrew word at the time it was first written.

In his Et*ymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language *(for readers of
English), Ernest Klein wrote:
1 band, frontlet-band, 2 PBH phylactery. [Of uncertain origin. Perhaps
formed from taf-feh-taf-feh-vav-sof, from taf-feh-taf-feh , Pi of
nun-taf-feh (=to drop), whence nun-taf-yod-feh-heh (= pendant), cp.
taf-feh-taf-feh-sof.]

The *Online Etymological Dictionary *traces the word "phylactery" to Greek
*phylax* (guardian, watcher, protector) a word of unknown origin... and
says The Custom of wearing it is based on a literal reading of scripture
(in) Deuteronomy 11:18.

I note that Klein uses the spelling with a vav found in Deut 11:18 and not
without a vav as in Deut 6:8.

My own thought is that Hebrew sometimes reverses a word to produce its
antonym. For example:
The parsha (weekly portion of the Torah) Miketz (Genesis 41:1 - 44:17)
describes the travels of Joseph's brothers to Egypt. When they stood before
Joseph, they did not realize he was their brother. One reason is that
Joseph spoke with them through the interpreter, המליץ, haMeiLiTZ as if he
did not understand Hebrew. This word occurs only once (*hapex legomenon*)
in *Tanakh* with this meaning, at Genesis 42:
23. The oral tradition says the
מליץ MeiLiTZ was Menasha, Joseph's older son. Egyptian was written with
hieroglyphics / pictures. The Hebrew root for image

(make
a picture) is צלם TZeLeM. To translate from Egyptian to other languages
is to un-picture, hence, the reversal toמליץ MeiLiTZ.

Deut 6:4-9 begins with the SHeMa3 prayer which is a 5:7:5 haiku in Hebrew,
older than any attested Japanese haiku. Verses 6 and 7 emphasize the
meaningfulness and importance of "these words".
So it is possible that tet-tet-feh is a reversal of peh-tet-tet which means
to prattle, chatter, babble ... that is, to utter meaningless words. So,
perhaps ToTaFoS = important, meaningfui words.

[ha-Safran] The Time Traveler's Wife => Jules Verne

2020-05-06 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
Amalia mentioned "The Time Traveler's Wife". That reminded me that I once
met Jules Verne in Ramat Gan. This was not a trivial accomplishment because
the author died about 3 months before my father was born. The man I met
(who sincerely believed himself to be Jules Verne) adamantly refused to
talk about any of his books, of which I had read more than a few in English
translation. When I told my friends about this meeting, one of them (Mark
Levinson) said the explanation was obvious. Verne was time-traveling and I
met him before he wrote any of the books I had read.

[ha-Safran] Looking for FREE on-line teaching material or apps for conversational Hebrew for adults

2020-01-18 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
These are not instructional materials about teaching Hebrew. They are
topics with a lot of Hebrew language content that should be of value to
anyone studying Hebrew, especially those whose native language is English.

All of the materials in the numbered items are free and you may distribute
the links or files to anyone who would want to receive them.

1. Sound changes in (proto-) Hebrew consonants

Knowing the sound changes that occurred in Western Semitic consonants helps
a student recognize cognates of Hebrew words.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/kw2yvwanac7jhhp/SoundChangeHandOut_2.docx?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/kisl3s4dbmjv0qc/Sound_Changes_slides.pptx
c
?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9cwsdqs3tv4uq27/Sound_Changes.dox?dl=0

It seems the aleph originally had a Mediterranean CHS and Northern GHT-sound.
It lost that sound and moved from the end to the beginning of Hebrew nouns
under the influence of Aramaic which used aleph as a suffix for the
definite article. For example, the 2nd word in Tanakh, bet-resh-aleph,
sounded like B-R-GHT, cognate with English "brought (forth)".

My first linguistic discovery was the ancient W-sound of the Hebrew het.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0jhlbuwjoh1pb5l/het_W_parallels.docx?dl=0

*

It lost that sound, probably under the influence of Greek which had already
lost the W-sound of its 6th letter (now called digamma). The het had a KS =
X sound when the Greeks and Romans controlled the area.

The previous KS-sound of the het + the ancient CHS-sound of the aleph
explains why the Rashi-script aleph looks like a het + chupchik.

2 - Idioms formed via phono-semantic matching (PSM)

These idioms usually represent disguised code-switching, so well disguised
that neither the speaker / writer nor the listener / reader realize that a
switch has occurred.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d247l8wejcdvw1c/Idioms_via_PSM.pptx?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sqbbsipjovkih26/idiom_Formation_pics.docx?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5bmhhljrhweftfg/SHeTZeF%20QeTZeF_2.docx?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6mltrna6hlq3htz/ForgetMeNot.docx?dl=0

3 - Words and idioms formed by reversal

https://www.dropbox.com/s/u1mn920bficdk5k/Reversals2.pptx?dl=0

NaTZiV MeLakH "pillar of salt" is the reversal of a Phoenician euphemism
kHaLaM BoTZeN "bastion of strength / health" for a stroke or thrombosis (<
trauma + BoTZ = mud). The modern Hebrew term is SHaVaTZ = due to / caused
by + mud. Lot's wife became "mudstruck", paralyzed, unable to move as if
stuck in the mud. The words "looked backwards from behind (him)" are a
not-so-subtle hint that we need to pronounce / read the Hebrew phrase
backwards to understand it.

4 - Anthropomorphic maps

Anthropomorphic maps were generated by configuring the gigantic virtual
body of a god or goddess over the area to be mapped. The name of each part
of that body became the name of the area under that part. This produced a
mental image whose toponyms indicated the approximate location, direction,
and size of each area in the map.

This is an adults only item because the Phoenician maps of Hermes (whose
navel was at Mt. Hermon) and Aphrodite (Afro-deity, who gave her name to
Africa) are quite risque. They are literally connected at Sinai (with an
intentionally missing aleph between the nun and yod and therefore cognate
with the English noun "snatch") which contains the Desert of Zin (his
"zaiyin" = weapon, a euphemism for the male member).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/yxlvvgdcdadzep3/Anthropomorphic_Maps_3.pptx?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ksjxfos5myl6e1w/Anthropomorphic_Maps_3.docx?dl=0

On similar American Indian maps, the male and female bodies are always a
discrete / discreet distance apart.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ravvjibss9llncl/BlackfootMaps.doc?dl=0

I learned this mapping concept from Dan Moonhawk Alford
 (deceased) and Stan Knowlton
.
I
was able to match the body parts and toponyms in West Asia and North Africa
because Hebrew and Phoenician are both Western Semitic languages with a
similar lexicon.

For unbelievable but genuine folk etymologies for the same toponyms, see
this file.

[ha-Safran] Klein's etymological English language dictionary of Hebrew words

2019-06-24 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
Today's Balashon blog at
*http://www.balashon.com/*
tells us that Klein's English dictionary of Hebrew etymologies has been put
online by Sefaria at
*https://www.sefaria.org.il/Klein_Dictionary?lang=bi
*
You will have to "register" to use this dictionary at
*https://www.sefaria.org.il/register?next=%2FKlein_Dictionary%252C_%25D7%2595%25D6%25B7%25D7%25A1%25D6%25B8%25D6%25BC%25D7%25AA%3Flang%3Dbi

*
but registration is free.

Klein can be very useful when teaching English words that have Hebrew
origins or cognates.
For example, the word "faucet" has an unknown origin in the *Online
Etymological Dictionary* at
*https://www.etymonline.com/word/faucet
 *

But if you know that the consonantal Hebrew letter vav had an F/Ph-sound,
you can connect "faucet" to Hebrew vav-samekh-tof *וסת* = to regulate.
The same letters represent the Hebrew word for menstruation for which Klein
does *not* know the origin. But now that you know the vav had an
F/Ph-sound, you can trace it to Greek *phasis* = phase of the moon.

You can see a more complete list of Hebrew letter ancient sounds at

[ha-Safran] Unique Holocaust documentary

2019-04-30 Thread Israel Cohen via Hasafran
forwarded by Izzy

*From:* do...@kantercompany.com
*Sent:* 21 April 2019
*Subject:* Unique Holocaust documentary - Kindly reply

Dear friends and colleagues,

Kindly let me know if you would be willing to share news about our new
documentary, *The Presence of Their Absence*, on your Facebook pages, in
your newsletters, or directly with your students and followers.

I believe it generates strong discussion on the new oral tradition of adult
children of Holocaust survivors. Few of their stories have ever been
told. It’s an honor for me to be at the forefront of this story tradition
that belongs uniquely to them.

*The Presence of Their Absence* follows a son of survivors on a journey to
trace his inherited trauma. Armed with only scant clues from his late
parents, Fred Zaidman ventures into the unknown to tell his story for this
first time.

With helpers in Poland, Israel, Germany, and an unlikely source – a Baptist
minister in Atlanta who guides us through a cemetery in Poland - Fred finds
his roots in the ashes of the Shoah, unshackles his pain and reconstructs
his future.

Yad Vashem has called The Presence of Their Absence “a film for the ages”.
We are delighted it has just come to Digital HD on iTunes and your other
platforms:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/the-presence-of-their-absence/id1449946652

https://www.amazon.com/Presence-Their-Absence-Fred-Zaidman/dp/B07P1C57FL.

You may also order a DVD on our website:
https://thepresenceoftheirabsence.com/ and for a scholastic version for
projecting onto large screens:
http://logtv.com/storefront/product/the-presence-of-their-absence/.

I am attaching the press release from our distributor, Virgil Films
Entertainment, as well.

We are available for interviews about the genesis of the project. Although
we are in Los Angeles, director Donna Kanter and film subject Fred Zaidman
would be available to join you for a screening and discussion with
attendees.

We plan to bring the film east and abroad (Italy, Poland, Germany, Israel)
in August, to New York and the Northeast in the Fall, and to the South in
November.

Feel free to contact me at my email address or phone numbers also listed
below.

With gratitude, Chag Pesach sameach, and a joyous Easter.
