[ha-Safran] Emergency Preparedness

2013-06-04 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Y'all,

In Israel last week I participated in a nationwide drill for emergency
preparedness right in the middle of a brit milah. I decided that between
that and the drills run here at American Jewish University that I would
incorporate a discussion on personal safety at my session in Houston on
emergency preparedness for regular library disasters.

If you won't be joining me at the AJL 47th Annual Conference, please take
the time to watch the following YouTube video, which was made in Houston,
and start the discussion at your library as to what you would do if you were
attacked.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VcSwejU2D0

Today, librarians are saving lives as well as books.

Be safe,

[ha-Safran] Need Books in Romanian, Swahili & Amharic

2013-03-25 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Le-Kulam,

There are children and teens who spend approximately 6 weeks in a special
home recovering from open heart surgery at Wolfson Hospital in Holon,
Israel. They need to be entertained until they are strong enough to fly back
to Africa, Eastern Europe and South America. What better way to to entertain
them than with the gift of reading.

If you send me Romanian, Swahili or Amharic books in any condition, I will
make sure that they get to the children. If you are in already in Israel,
email me and I'll send you the address of the home off list. If you have a
suggestion as to where I can get some children's books in African languages,
than please email me directly as well.

These surgeries are performed under the auspices of Save a Child's Heart.
You may have read about this organization in the book Sabrina: the girl with
a hole in her heart that was previously reviewed in our newsletter.

During this Festival of Freedom, let's give these children, who've just
received the freedom to live, something worth living for...reading.

Hag Sameah,

Jackie

[ha-Safran] Book on Brandeis Bardin Institute

2012-12-18 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Le-Kulam,

Please see the information below on how to order the new book on the history
of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute and how it influenced Jewish life in
Southern California. We hope you'll add a copy to your library's collection.

History of the Brandeis-Bardin Institute
Preserved for Future Generations

There is an extraordinary place in the hills of Simi Valley,
California where Jews of all ages and from around the world come for
self-exploration and discovery of their own distinct voice and identity
relative to Judaism. It is one of the most impactful institutions ever to
appear on the landscape of American Jewish life.
If you were fortunate enough to have had this experience, or even
if you have not, the recently published The Brandeis-Bardin Institute: A
Living History is a must read. The story begins in the 1930’s when the
fortuitous connection between Dr. Shlomo Bardin and United States Supreme
Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis led Dr. Bardin to create an innovative
summer program whose purpose was to arouse a spark in college students that
would awaken a positive attitude toward their Jewish culture and tradition.
It goes on to chronicle the evolution and dynamic history of the
Institute from its humble beginnings through the creation of such notable
programs as Camp Alonim for young children and House of the Book, a pioneer
in adult Jewish education.
Each chapter follows in chronological order and is filled with
vibrant and amusing historical photos, and intertwined in the narrative are
contributions of artists, scholars, and supporters, all of whom felt deeply
connected to the Institute.
This book is a labor of love born out of the dedication of four
women whose lives were indelibly marked by their many decades of involvement
with the Institute. To ensure that the institution’s history would not be
lost, they founded the Brandeis-Bardin History Project, and within it a
committee to oversee the writing of the book. All four founders--Ms. Rita
Chotiner, Ms. Elaine Gill, Ms. Mickey Wapner, and Ms. Betty Weiner--served
on the committee and invited educator Dr. Bruce Powell, a longtime
participant and scholar of Dr. Bardin’s methodology, to join them.
The author, Jenna Leventhal, is the coordinator of research
efforts at the Boston History and Innovation Collaborative. Her work in
public history includes documenting histories of nonprofit organizations,
developing museum exhibits, and producing historical documentaries.
Copies are available for purchase by calling 805.582.4450 or
ajula.edu/bbihistory.

Have a winter break,

Jackie

[ha-Safran] Pictures from Convention in Pasadena

2012-07-17 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Fellow Convention Attendees,

I hope that everyone had a chance to visit the Exhibit Hall during our last
conference in Pasadena. I somehow forgot to take pictures in that area, but
some of my exhibitors wanted to know if there were any pictures of the
exhibit hall.

If you happen to have any pictures, could you please forward them to me at
ajladmana...@gmail.com, I would really appreciate any pictures you might
have.

I look forward to seeing you all next year in Houston.

Enjoy your summer,

Jackie

2012-07-06 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Le-Kulam,

It was great seeing many of you in Pasadena last month. I saw this article
about one of our sessions in our local paper, The Jewish Journal and thought
you might enjoy reading it if you missed that session. There were so many
interesting sessions it was hard to choose.

[ha-Safran] Emergency Preparedness

2012-06-26 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom!

I hope that all of my fellow AJL members are safe and dry following the
flooding in the South and the fires in the West. To that end, I am emailing
you all a reminder to pull out those "Pocket Response Plan for Collections"
you prepared at the AJL Convention in Seattle. You need to review the plan,
update any information that might be out of date and review the procedures
with your fellow staff members.

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, go to WESTPAS' web page
http://westpas.org/course_docs.html and download the document. If you have
any questions as to how to fill this out, you can contact either myself or
WESTPAS.

The best time to prepare for a disaster is before it happens. Don't be
caught unprepared!

Wishing you a safe summer,

Jackie

Re: [ha-Safran] Webinars that don't stink?

2012-05-22 Thread Jackie
I agree with Heidi, I listened to a webinar today that was worse than going to
the dentist. I could have learned the information I needed in 20 minutes but
instead I almost spent 2 hours bored to tears had I not been simultaneously
busy with convention emailing;)
