Re: [ha-Safran] Keep older encyclopedia?

2013-09-26 Thread Jeannine Davidson
Hi All,
I bought a personal copy at a book sale years ago for pennies. I have since
then used it with book discussions that have themes of Pre-World War II or the
Holocaust. (ie In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson) Some of the entries are
frightening given the hindsight and what came to pass.

Given that so many people think so highly about this Encyclopedia (I, btw, do
to!), I’d like to let everyone know that we have excellent, fully searchable,
copy/pastable, printable edition of available for either offline or online use
for individuals and synagogues.

That 1939 encyclopedia is quite special. It describes many European Jewish
communities before the Holocaust that n longer exist today. I definitely
recommend that you keep it.

When I coordinated the Temple Beth Shalom library in Spokane, WA, the custodian
found a copy of that encyclopedia. I looked through it and realized what a
treasure it was.

Dear Hasafranim,

I am recataloging our reference area and can't decide whether or not to keep a
10 vol set of The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia from 1939. It's in pretty good
shape and doesn't take up too much space, but is never touched and we have a
complete set of the 1977 Encyclopaedia Judaica. Yet some librarians keep older
reference works for invaluable photos and perspective. Any thoughts?

Hello,

We are thinking of changes some of the class novels our students read about the
Holocaust. Here are the novels students read now:

4th Jacob's Rescue

5th Number of the Stars

6th Devil's Arithmetic

7th The Wave

8th Night

We are considering changing to Diary of Anne Frank for seventh grade and Shadow
on the Mountain for sixth. If you have any suggestions, I would be very
interested.

Thank you,

Re: [ha-Safran] CE/BCE vs BC/AD

2012-07-25 Thread Jeannine Davidson
I have noticed recently that more scientific, historical, and archeological
journals, as well as newspaper articles, and art history books adopting the BCE
and CE designation. It is an excellent development of scholarship in the
correct direction.

Admittedly, CE/BCE is built on Christian terms, but I think they are still
more religion-neutral than the previous practice of using BC and AD.

The alternative would be to use years as constructed by Orthodox Jews.
These would not be understandable by any outside of that community. Plus,
they would not agree with the Muslim understanding of time. From what I can
reckon, the use of the commonly-understood numbers for time plus CE or BCE
is the most religion-neutral way of describing time.

It appears I have already lost this bet with RDA, so this is probably
whistling in the wind. ;-)
