[ha-Safran] Wikidata workshop: there is still time to register

Dear all,

Just a gentle reminder that we are meeting Wednesday! There's still time to
register.

Please join us next Wednesday, May 26, between 12:30-2:00 pm EST
(9:30-11:00 AM PT or 7:30-9:00 pm in Israel) for the *Wikidata Beginners'
Workshop.* The workshop will be led by Neil M. Frau-Cortes (University of
Maryland Libraries), chair of the AJL Cataloging Committee and Sarah Hovde
(UMD Libraries).

Wikidata is a free, open, structured data platform that anyone can edit. At
the same time, it offers enough granularity and connectivity to be used for
authority management. Today more and more libraries are considering
Wikidata as an environment for the creation of linked data entities,
particularly for digital and special collections. In this workshop you will
learn the basics of entity creation and will have the opportunity to start
editing records with the help of our instructors.

This session is sponsored by AJL's RAS Division and is members-only. All
AJL members are welcome.

*Note:*  *Please register in advance.* *For those that wish to participate
in the hands-on session, please create a Wikidata account

prior
to the workshop. Bring two examples of personal names you want to
establish, preferably somebody not already established in Wikidata or a
person whose Wikidata record is very basic. Please have a short biography
of the person, preferably from an online source such as a finding aid.*

[ha-Safran] AJL RAS Cataloging Committee minutes available

Dear all,

Last March 3, 2021 the AJL RAS Cataloging Committee held its Winter
meeting, which was very well attended. Many thanks to the members of the
committee and to all those who participated online.

In spite of our best efforts, the recording of the meeting is unusable due
to the internet issues that the East Coast experienced on that day. The
minutes, however, are available and reflect the contents accurately. If

[ha-Safran] This Sunday -- Mapathon: Crowdsourcing the AJL Map Platform

Dear all,

This is a reminder that this Sunday, February 21, 11am PT / 2pm ET / 9pm
Israel time, we are holding the event *Mapathon: Crowdsourcing the AJL Map
Platform*. We are very excited about this session and there is still time
for you to sign up here

.

AJL aims to map institutions with Jewish collections to promote the
visibility and accessibility of such material. AJL's Directory Committee
has been working hard to make this happen. After collecting initial data
from libraries and archives, we're ready for the next phase of this project
through a community event that aims to crowdsource our database. First, our
wonderful intern, Yahm Reichart, will present a visualization prototype of
the initial data to give everyone an idea of what this project entails.
Next, we'd like to ask all of you to help us make sure that your collection
is in our database. We're especially excited to have information about
lesser known libraries and archives, such as those found in synagogues,
schools, historical societies, or museums. This will be a fun event where
we get your input about the project so far and attendees will get to share
details about the places they work or volunteer. We look forward to seeing
you and learning about your collections!

This event is sponsored by AJL's RAS & SSCPL Divisions. All members and
non-members are welcome.

By the way, if you are interested but have a schedule conflict, we still
appreciate your contribution to the database, when you have a minute.

[ha-Safran] Internship for a library student

Dear all,

The Directory taskforce of the AJL is offering an internship for a library
student.  AJL wants to create a directory of Judaica libraries, archives
and museums whose public face will be a visualization of the data in map
format, faceted and searchable. The idea is that users could discover
Judaica collections held in their area, an information that is not often
aggregated in a single resource.

The task of the intern will be to perform some data cleanup/enrichment and
build a map visualization. Knowledge of Excel, Open Refine and any data
visualization tools are preferred. This is a time limited, unpaid

[ha-Safran] AJL Directory project - your help is needed

It's been so nice to "see" many of you at the conference! For those who
asked (and for those who missed the presentation too) this is a quick
reminder of what we are doing.

We are aiming for a new interface for the AJL directory that is also a
useful tool to locate library and archive collections, no matter how small.

[ha-Safran] Help build our AJL directory!

Dear Safranim,

It was great to see some of you this afternoon. I wanted to email the whole
list about the project I mentioned, particularly for those who didn't
attend.

Our small Directory taskforce (Michelle, Amalia, Dina, and myself) has been
brainstorming about the best way of creating an interactive AJL directory.
The idea is to gather information about all library and archive collections
of Jewish content, both from members of our association and beyond, and not
limited to the US. Once we get  a certain amount of data we would like to
display the directory online in an interactive way whose details are still
to be refined. For instance, we could have a map where people could zoom
into a particular geographical area, and click on the names of libraries
and archives to find more details. This would be very helpful for people to
find libraries close by or discover what hidden gems are in their own
area's archives. It will also facilitate networking between institutions.

To that effect we prepared this form

As you can see, it lets you introduce data about the scope, subjects,
languages of your collections, digitization projects, and many other
details. Of course not all of the fields may apply to all institutions, but
we wanted to get a picture as detailed as possible.

In the future we will also analyze how this integrates with existing
similar directories around the world.

This was going to be introduced at the Conference, in the framework of a

database. Since at this moment there is no conference, but we are all home

[ha-Safran] Catalan nusach siddur

After almost 3 years of research, Dr. Idan Pérez, director of the
Department of Rare Books at the National Library of Israel, has edited and
published the *Sidur Catalunya*. The *Sidur* is based on six manuscripts
from the 14th-16th centuries and constitutes the recovery of the
ancient *Nussach
Catalunya*, the *nussach* of the *Tefillah* used by the Jews in Catalonia,
Valencia and Mallorca during the Middle Ages (at the time known as the
*Rishonim* period). The *Sidur* also includes commentaries, *halachot* and
*minhaguim* that were compiled by a disciple of *Rabbenu Yona Girondi* at
the *Bet Midrash* of Barcelona.

In a vast introduction, the author tells us about the origin of the *Sidur*
and the evolution of the different *nussachim* known today. The author also
details the research carried out including the description of the
manuscripts used as the basis of the *Sidur *as well as a list of
characteristics that define the *Nussach Catalunya* and a list of the
*piyuttim* included in the *Sidur*. One of the chapters of the introduction
deals with the graphic representation of the Name of God, which is
represented in the *Sidur Catalunya* by a special symbol, as represented in
the medieval manuscripts. It also includes a list of *chachamim* that are
mentioned in the commentary, including *Gueonim* from Sura, Pumbedita,
Qairouan, *chahmei Catalunya*, France, Provence and *Sefarad*. The author
concludes the introduction with a historical study of the Jews of Catalonia
that goes from their arrival to the Iberian Peninsula, the flourishing of
the *Torah* centers of Barcelona and Girona, and following the footprints
of the different diasporas of the Jewish communities who fled Catalonia
after the 1391 riots and the expulsion of 1492. The study focuses mainly on
the Catalan Jewish communities of Italy, the Ottoman Empire and North
Africa (Algeria). Photographs of the manuscripts and different editions of
the *Machzor le-Yamim Noraim* that were published in Saloniki under the
name *"Machzor le-nussach Barcelona minhag Catalunya"* are included; a map
of the Catalan Countries is also included.

Description of the *Sidur*:

The *Sidur* includes the prayers for the common days, *Shabbat*,
festivities, Passover *Haggadah*, *Azharot* for *Shavuot*, *Hoshaanot* for
*Sukkot* and *Yom Aravah* (*Hoshaanah Rabbah*), fasts, *Yamim Noraim*,
*tefillot* and *berachot* for different events in the life of the person,
*baqashot* and *halachot* for the festivities, etc.

Of great importance are a series of *baqashot* composed by *chachmei
Catalunya*, published for the first time, including one by *Rabbi Moshe ben
Nachman (Ramban)*, one by *Rabbi Shlomo ben Adret (Rashba)* and one by *Rabbenu
Zerachya ha-Levi*.
