Re: [ha-Safran] question for Day School Yeshiva librarians- authors for 8th graders
Hi Esther, When I was librarian of the Ramaz Middle School, I recommended to in 7th or 8th graders the book, Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters First 100 Years by the Delaney sisters and Amy Hill Hearth. It is the true story of two African-American sisters whose parents were slaves. They moved to NY and one became a doctor and one a dentist. Both lived to become 100 years old. It is a nice story and accessible to young adults. I also recommended Agathe Christie for mystery lovers. There are many adult books that are appropriate for this age group. The funeral will be in Israel, and the flight to Israel is today. As plans for a memorial at the Gottesman Library of Hebraica-Judaica materialize, we'll send out a notice. Throughout her illness, rather than talk about herself and her physical discomfort, Leah expressed concern for others--about the effect of her absence on their work loads. In the workplace, Leah was always disarmingly candid and honest; she never hesitated to bring up important issues, regardless of how challenging those issues were. After decades of service, Leah seems inseparable from the history of Yeshiva University Libraries. We all share in mourning her loss. Dear Colleagues, I want to share with all of you that I am retiring as librarian at Yavneh Academy in Paramus, NJ as of the end of this school year. I have been here for 22 years and worked in the field for over 35 years. This decision is totally my choice, and I am excited to plan the next part of my life which will include taking classes, volunteer work, learning, more family and grandchildren time, and AJL. Sadly, the school is not replacing me with a professional. The technology department will be absorbing the library space and program, although it has become quite clear that it will not be continuing in anywhere near a similar way. It saddens me that our excellent, current, and expansive collection of Judaica and general studies will probably fade away. Many teachers have approached me to express their disappointment in the school's decision. As seems to be in many cases, I don't think the administration realizes how important the role of the library is in our educational process. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the conference in Boston since school ends on June 20. It is important to me to finish my job and leave in the right way. Thank you all for your help over the years, your encouragement and ideas, and your ongoing support. I look forward to continuing to work with AJL and all of you, a very special group of colleagues and friends. [ha-Safran] book purchase from England
Dear Safranim, Is there a simple way of ordering a book that is published in great Britain and not widely available here? The book I am interested in ordering, is Yair Lapids' book about his father called 'Memories After My Death. I could only find used copies of that book. Thanks.
