Re: [ha-Safran] question for Day School Yeshiva librarians- authors for 8th graders

2023-03-01 Thread Noreen Wachs via Hasafran
Hi Esther,
When I was librarian of the Ramaz Middle School, I recommended to in 7th or
8th graders the book, Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters First 100 Years
by the Delaney sisters and Amy Hill Hearth. It is the true story of two
African-American sisters whose parents were slaves. They moved to NY and
one became a doctor and one a dentist. Both lived to become 100 years old.
It is a nice story and accessible to young adults.
I also recommended Agathe Christie for mystery lovers. There are many adult
books that are appropriate for this age group.
Thanks for being the best librarian for all my grandchildren at RYNJ!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Leah Adler

Dear colleagues,

I'm very sad to report that Leah Adler, Head Librarian of Hebraica-Judaica at
Yeshiva University, died this weekend after an illness that she managed quietly
and successfully until recently. The funeral will be in Israel, and the flight
to Israel is today. As plans for a memorial at the Gottesman Library of
Hebraica-Judaica materialize, we'll send out a notice.

Throughout her illness, rather than talk about herself and her physical
discomfort, Leah expressed concern for others--about the effect of her absence
on their work loads. In the workplace, Leah was always disarmingly candid and
honest; she never hesitated to bring up important issues, regardless of how
challenging those issues were.

After decades of service, Leah seems inseparable from the history of Yeshiva
University Libraries. We all share in mourning her loss. Let us all support
one another as we grieve.

Subject: [ha-Safran] I am retiring!!

Dear Colleagues,
I want to share with all of you that I am retiring as librarian at Yavneh
Academy in Paramus, NJ as of the end of this school year. I have been here for
22 years and worked in the field for over 35 years. This decision is totally
my choice, and I am excited to plan the next part of my life which will include
taking classes, volunteer work, learning, more family and grandchildren time,
and AJL.
Sadly, the school is not replacing me with a professional. The technology
department will be absorbing the library space and program, although it has
become quite clear that it will not be continuing in anywhere near a similar
way. It saddens me that our excellent, current, and expansive collection of
Judaica and general studies will probably fade away. Many teachers have
approached me to express their disappointment in the school's decision. As
seems to be in many cases, I don't think the administration realizes how
important the role of the library is in our educational process.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the conference in Boston since
school ends on June 20. It is important to me to finish my job and leave in
the right way.
Thank you all for your help over the years, your encouragement and ideas, and
your ongoing support. I look forward to continuing to work with AJL and all of
you, a very special group of colleagues and friends.

There are very few middle school biographies available about the well- known
Israeli's listed below. The only Middle School book I have is a book about
Ben-Yehudah by Dvorah Omer called, "Rebirth: The Story of Eliezer Ben-Yehudah
and the Modern Hebrew Language." This is an old book published by JPS in 1972.
The rest of the biographies in my collection are adult books.

Dear Safranim,
Can anyone recommend some free educational apps for grades 5-8 that we could
download to ipads that we have in our library. Thank you so much and Shana Tova.

Re: [ha-Safran] retirement

2015-02-25 Thread Noreen Wachs
Dear Pearl,
I can only echo what others have said. It was a pleasure working with you when
I was on the Council and you were the President of AJL. Remember the NYC
transit strike when we had our mid-winter meetings and you had to sleep in the
city? You were cool under pressure!
May you have good health and nachat from your children and grandchildren during
your retirement.

Subject: [ha-Safran] retirement

Dear Friends,
As many of you may have already heard, I will be retiring from my position as
Dean of Libraries at Yeshiva University at the end of this academic year.
My experience at Yeshiva has been an extremely rewarding professional journey;
one from which I derived a great deal of personal satisfaction. Along with a
wonderful group of librarians and support personnel, I had the opportunity to
move the YU libraries forward and to provide the student and faculty community
with the best that we could offer. I have had the pleasure of working with
many of you at AJL in various capacities and I expect I will continue to be
involved in the years to come.

A committee has been formed to search for my replacement.

[ha-Safran] question on Sefer HaHinnuch

2015-01-29 Thread Noreen Wachs
Dear Colleagues,
A rabbi in my school says that there is a mistake in the Hebrew in several
editions of the Sefer HaHinnuch that I have in my library. We have
ספר החינוך על תריג מצוות מנוקדת
And the English-Hebrew version of Sefer HaHinnuch: The Book of Mitzvah
Education
In mitzvah כד 24 in the paragraph משרשי מצוה the paragraph ends with the words
אין בו טרח רב but the teacher in our school says it should say יש בו טרח רב
Which is the correct version? Thank you so much.

[ha-Safran] book purchase from England

2013-10-25 Thread Noreen Wachs
Dear Safranim,

Is there a simple way of ordering a book that is published in great
Britain and not widely available here? The book I am interested in
ordering, is Yair Lapids' book about his father called 'Memories After
My Death. I could only find used copies of that book. Thanks.
