[ha-Safran] new judaica title in Turkish on Turkey

2024-09-28 Thread RIFAT BALI via Hasafran
Dear safranim

Please note our new title

Istanbul’s Jewish Bookstores: Monuments to a Bygone Era, 60 p 9786256124028..
Price USD 25.- plus postage

This short study narrates the history of three bookstores of Istanbul owned
by Turkish Jews, two by Sephardis one by an Ashkenazi, which have
disappeared a long time ago. One was involved in publishing and selling
Turkish books, one in selling German titles and the last one dealt with
rare and antiquarian titles. This book is a reminiscence of a by-gone
multicultural Istanbul where Turkish Jews, Sephardi and Ashkenazi,
contributed to the cultural life of the city.

This research draws from *Şalom*, the longest-published Turkish-Jewish
newspaper since 1947, to trace the communication strategies of *Şalom* as a
form of minority media. It offers a multilayered analysis of the
newspaper's front pages and İzel Rozental's editorial cartoon corner,
"Tünelin Ucu"(End of the Tunnel). The content and historical discourse
analysis of the selected number of front pages shed light on various
intervention and communication strategies used by* Şalom* during four
marking periods in the history of the Turkish-Jewish minority. It is argued
that while the content and the tone of the news on the front pages are
mediated by the political and social context, the editorial cartoons of
"Tünelin Ucu" constitute a significant space to claim oppositional position
through the critique of local and international politics. Thus, the
editorial cartoons form a dialogic relationship with the front-page news of
minority media create different channels and unique politics of
representation. Editorial cartoons carry the potential of turning minority
newspaper into an active agent questioning the status quo and paving the
way to put forward the criticism

[ha-Safran] new title on Ashkenazis in the Ottoman Empire

2022-11-23 Thread RIFAT BALI via Hasafran
Dear Safranim

I would like to announce our following new title:

Sarah Zaides,* Tevye’s Ottoman Daughter: Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews at the
End of Empire,* Libra Kitap, İstanbul, 2022, 218 p., 978-625-8472-45-5

Price: $ 50.- plus postage payment by credit card. Text of back cover is
below.

Kind regards

In existing scholarship on Jewish subjects of the Russian Empire, there
were three typical fates available to Russia’s Jews on the eve of the
Bolshevik Revolution: they could remain in the shtetl, leave for a new life
in America, or participate in the Russian Revolution. Tevye’s Ottoman
Daughter traces a fourth path, following the saga of Ashkenazi Jews who
instead crossed the Black Sea to join their Sephardic coreligionists in the
Ottoman capital of Constantinople and later Istanbul, or who joined
agricultural farming communities in the Western Aegean sponsored by the
Baron Maurice de Hirsch’s Jewish Colonization Association. There, they
considered, and reconsidered, the possibilities open to them, including
eventual migration to Palestine, Western Europe, North America, and
Argentina. Others stayed and forged a new life as an Ashkenazi minority in
Istanbul, creating new organizations, places of worship, and political
practices. These Russian Jewish migrants give us insight into the ethnic,
religious, and political challenges and aspirations twilight years of the
Ottoman Empire on the brink of Turkish statehood.

[ha-Safran] new book on Jews of Izmir (Smyrna)

2022-03-29 Thread RIFAT BALI via Hasafran
Dear Safranim

We would like to bring to your attention the following title

Leah Bornstein-Makovetsky, *Jews in the Economic Life of Constantinople and
Smyrna in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries (1700-1820)*, Libra
Kitap, İstanbul, 2022, 388 p.. 978-625-8472-23-3

Price: $ 45.- plus postage.
Payment by credit card.
If interested please contact us.
Back cover text.
The book consists of ten chapters that are based mainly on new sources. The
chapters discuss the economic activities of Jews and non-Jews in
Constantinople and Smyrna during the long eighteenth century (1700-1820).
The chapters also contain information relating to Salonica. The primary
material for the volume was the Levant Company's official correspondence
exchanged between its administration and employees, political authorities
in England and the Sublime Porte. This work is based also on archival
research of Jewish sources, mainly the Responsa literature, in order to
understand the various topics under discussion. Jews frequently appear in
these studies due to their place in local and international trade and
because of the close ties between Jewish brokers and European merchants.
The ten chapters of the book are based on undisclosed documentation and
deal mainly with the Jews of Constantinople and secondarily also with the
Jews of Smyrna, with slight reference also to the Jews of Salonica. The
purpose of the research is to point out the deep involvement of the Jews in
these cities in trade and money lending, and to study the connections of
Jewish brokers, merchants, and Sarrafs in the above cities with the British
merchants in the period under discussion.

From the introduction: “The synagogues of Turkey, which had not gone

[ha-Safran] new publication on Ottoman Jews in English

2019-11-24 Thread RIFAT BALI via Hasafran
Dear Safranim

We would like to bing to your attention our following publication:

Leah Bornstein-Makovetsky, *Protestant Missionaries to the Jewish
Communities of Istanbul, Salonika and Izmir 1820-1914,* Libra Kitap,
İstanbul, 2019, 386 p., ISBN: 9786057884596

*Back cover*
The book discusses the extensive evangelical, educational, medical and
philanthropic activities of three Protestant missionary organizations in
Jewish society in Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century up to the
First World War. The study concentrates on the three large Jewish
communities of Istanbul, Salonika and Izmir. It covers many aspects of
Jewish life, such as the legal and social status of Jews in Ottoman Empire,
the traditional and modern education, intra-communal bitter disputes, the
process of secularization, class affiliation, family life and status of
women. The focus of the research is on the missionaries’ achievements and
failure. Leah Bornstein Makovetsky emphasizes the Jewish communities
response to the missionaries' various activities and examines the ways in
which the Jewish leadership fought against any Christian influence on
Jewish society in the course of decades in which far-reaching political,
social and religious changes have taken place both in the Ottoman Empire
and in Ottoman Jewish society. The book shows that protestant missionaries
arrived in the Ottoman Empire with firm convictions and grandiose plans,
and foremost to lead to conversion of many Jews. At the same time the
research considers the question of whether the Protestant mission had any
real chance of success in its work among the Jews of Istanbul, Salonika and
Izmir. The data and most of the information cited in the book are drawn
largely from missionary reports and journals, and from Jewish sources,
especially Responsa literature and Jewish Journals.

[ha-Safran] new publication in english on Turkey Jews

2019-05-08 Thread RIFAT BALI via Hasafran
Dear Safranim

Please note our new publication.

C.M. Kösemen, *Memories and Stories of Bodrum's Jewish Community*, Libra
Kitap, İstanbul, 2019, 195 p., ISBN: 9786057884176

Some may know Bodrum as a pleasant vacation spot in Southwestern Turkey.
Few, however, would know this town as the home of a small but influential
Jewish community that thrived until the mid-20th century. In this book,
artist and researcher C. M. Kösemen uses historic sources and interviews to
flesh out the first comprehensive overview of this little-known Sephardic
community. Here you will find compelling stories and poignant memories; of
ancient Jewish settlements in the remote corners of the Bodrum peninsula;
of pleasant family relations between Turks and Jews; of wartime hardships
and near-escapes; of people like Janet Akyüz Mattei, who went on to become
one of the world’s greatest astrophysicists; of Abraham Galante the
historian; and more… Illustrated with detailed black-and-white photographs
and annotated with footnotes that explain local nuances, this book also
contains a touristic itinerary of Judaic sites in the vicinity of Bodrum.

[ha-Safran] New Judaica publication in English

2018-08-09 Thread RIFAT BALI
Dear Safranim,

Please note our new publication:

C.M. Kosemen, *A Karakas Speaks: Interview wit a Member of Turkey's
Crypto-Judaic "Dönme" Community, *2018, 148 p., ISBN: 9786052380581
US$ 50.00 + postage

"Since the late 20th century, academic interest in the crypto-Judaic group
known as the Dönmes has grown and intensified. Most studies resulting from
this interest have concentrated on the Dönmes’ place in a world of
intersecting identities, and on the nature of their secret religion. In
this process, however, narratives by actual members of this community have
been few and far-between. This work, based on a series of interviews with a
member of the Karakaş group – one of the three main Dönme sects - aims to
fill that gap. Complete with introducing chapters on the history of the
Dönmes, and in particular the Karakaş group; richly annotated with
footnotes that explain local nuances and provide additional resources; this
book will appeal both to specialist workers, as well as general readers
interested in this curious chapter at the intersection of Ottoman, Judaic
and contemporary Turkish history. Previously-unpublished intra-communal
religious documents, calendars and partial genealogies of the Karakaş sect
are also reproduced in this volume. "

[ha-Safran] New Judaica title in English on Turkey

2018-04-10 Thread RIFAT BALI
Dear Safranim

Please note our new release:

Roysi Ojalvo Kamayor, *Turkey's Jewish Heritage Revised: Architectural
Conservation and the Politics of Memory,* Libra Kitap, İstanbul, 2018, 139
p., ISBN: 9786052380383

This research traces the histories of the Ahrida and Mayor Synagogues in
Istanbul, and the Great Synagogue in Edirne against the background of
interrelated questions on architecture, identity, memory/ history, power,
and cultural difference. Established in the 15th, 17th and 19th centuries
respectively, all three buildings were left idle when their neighborhoods
were abandoned by Jews in the mid-20th century. Following the 1980s however
- and after several decades of decay - they were selected from among
Turkey's numerous crumbling synagogues to be the showcases of the country’s
Jewish past. Having numerous times been ‘sites of memory' within their
active lifetimes, they were again transformed into sites of memory by
restoration projects under the forces of national and international
politics, heritage industry, tourism, and others. This research considers
the buildings as long-standing sites of power, difference, and negotiation,
in which memories collided and histories were constructed. It discusses in
comparative fashion how the buildings were instrumentalized for the
representation of the past at different moments in Ottoman and Turkish
history and critically examines the discourses and practices that
surrounded their restoration projects in the post-1980s.

Ben Sperer, *Under Turkish Skies – A Family History 1876-1960,* Libra
Kitap, İstanbul, 2017, 127 p., ISBN: 978-605-9022-94-1

This is a review of Ben Sperer’s years in Turkey before he left the country
to take up residence in Canada. In an effort to place his own story in its
proper context, the author preceded it by a description of his parent’s
lives. It is an interesting story reflecting the memories of a colourful
life of an Ashkenazi Jew in a society rich in tradition and history going
back generations. It is against this background that the author describes
the ups and downs, the tragedies and successes, as well as the ordinary
day-to-day events of his life in Turkey.

[ha-Safran] new title in English from Turkey

2017-01-31 Thread RIFAT BALI
Dear Safranim

Greetings from Istanbul. Please note our new title:

Siren Bora with contribution by C.M. Kösemen, *The Bodrum Jewish Cemetery,*
Libra Kitap, İstanbul, 2016, 118 p., ISBN: 9786059022903 hardback

Tombstones have many memories to share about the past. For these reasons,
they must be made to speak, and their sayings must be carefully recorded…"

Known today mainly as a holiday destination, the Aegean town of Bodrum also
hosted a small but important Jewish community in its past. This book
catalogues the only remaining physical traces of this community in a small,
neglected cemetery.

Written by Siren Bora and translated and photographed by C. M. Kösemen,
this study includes detailed images of all surviving tombstones in the
Bodrum Jewish Cemetery, translations of every legible epitaph and provides
useful background information on the history of Bodrum's Jews, Jewish
funerary traditions, the details of epitaph texts and more.

[ha-Safran] new Ottoman/Turkish Judaica title

2016-04-18 Thread RIFAT BALI
Dear Safranim

Please note our forthcoming title which will be available mid/end April:

Cengiz Sisman, *Transcending Diaspora: Studies on Sabbateanism and Dönmes*,
Libra Kitap, İstanbul, 2016, 260 p., ISBN: 9786059022699

Price : $ 50.- plus postage. Payment by credit card and/or paypal. For
paypal payment we will reflect paypal fees on the invoice. If interested
please send us your orders.

Back cover text:

This volume contains nine separate yet interconnected articles on the
Ottoman-Jewish messianic Sabbatean movement and the Dönmes in early modern
and modern times. The articles are linked by three common issues: 1- How
did the Dönmes survive their enigmatic identity among the Jews, Christians
and Muslims throughout the centuries; 2- How did the outside world perceive
and treat them? And 3-How did the dialectical relationship between Dönme
and the Others transform Dönme identity over time?

At the heart of the Dönme self-preservation over centuries stands a crucial
and yet idiosyncratic belief with regards to the Diaspora and the
Holy/Promised Land. They radically re-conceptualized the notion of the Holy
Land, and transcended the painful idea of being away from the “home.”
According to this belief, any land –say Salonica, Istanbul or Izmir- on
which the Dönme steps transforms its character and turns into the Holy
Land. With this new reinterpretation, the new Holy Land could be—and
was—considered a new ontological abode. It is not clear whether this idea
was conceived during the time of Sabbatai Sevi, but it is certain that it
has been utilized by later Dönme generations in order to engender genuine
survival mechanisms and mental comfort in the lands in which they lived.

The author is an Assistant Professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern History
at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

kind regards

Evanescent Happiness: Ottoman Jews Encounter Modernity - The Case of Lea
Mitrani and Joseph Niego (1863-1923)
Levi, Amalia Skarlatou
İstanbul, 2015 - 274 pages ISBN - 9786059022446
This book aims to be a collective biography of Joseph Niego and Lea
Mitrani, two Ottoman Jews, whose lives spanned a sixty-year period of
profound changes for Ottoman Jewry. Born in Edirne, Joseph and Lea were
educated in the schools of the Alliance Israélite Universelle.
Subsequently, they were sent to Paris in order to be trained as teachers
and be sent back to help “regenerate” Ottoman Jews through a Western-style
education. After their marriage, Joseph was appointed director of the
agricultural school “Mikveh Israel,” established by the Alliance in the
outskirts of Jaffa, where the family would reside for twelve years. Their
time in an agricultural school and contact with Zionism and the Jewish
pioneers in late nineteenth-century Palestine would define their lives as a
married couple and as Jews in the vortex of modernization and nationalism.
While Joseph would thrive professionally, Lea would gradually lose control
of her life.

*Kohen, Roz *

İstanbul, 2015 - Libra Kitap

English -
Judeo Spanish
 - 369
pages

ISBN – 9786059022347

*Jewish Constantinople portrays Jewish life during the transition from the
Ottoman Empire to the modern Republic of Turkey. It spans the two
generations prior to the one depicted in Jewish İstanbul. The
semi-biographical vignettes feature the Kohen, Benshoam, Levi and Romano
family ancestors. The book includes photographs from the Kohen family
archives. These were the last generations to grow up speaking
Judeo-Spanish. They strove to preserve their native tongue until the
changes brought by the two World Wars overwhelmed their efforts. Through
the passionate retelling of the previous generation’s stories and the use
of colorful Judeo-Spanish proverbs, they sought to preserve not only the
language but the cultural history it embodied.*

The present volume consists of a selection of articles by scholars on the

Israeli-Palestian conflict, the bursts of anti-Semitism which result from
these tensions are some of the many aspects studied in this volume. Others
aspects such as the cultural life and the cultural heritage of a
demographically dwindling community are also studied. This book is
indispensable for the general readership and scholars who would like to
grasp and understand better the reality of a very small community living in
a country which for the last two decades has been going through a
transformation from a so-called secular society into one where Islamist and
conservative values are dominant. Collection of articles 7 in French, 6 in
English.

[ha-Safran] New publication in English on Sabbateans

2014-08-04 Thread RIFAT BALI
Dear Safranim

Please note our new publication:

C.M. Kosemen, *Osman Hasan and the Tombstone Photographs of the Dönmes,*
Libra Kitap, İstanbul, 2014, 527 p., ISBN. 9786054326976

Back cover text:

"This is really a remarkable work, and will surely interest and delight
many people who would otherwise never have known about the existence of the
Donmeh. In a way, this volume has give a new life to one of the most
remarkable and enigmatic groups ever to emerge in Ottoman Thessaloniki.
What a lovely book..."

Mark Mazover, Ira D. Wallach Professor of History, Columbia University,
Author of* Salonica, City of Ghosts: Christians, Muslims and Jews 1430-1950*
.

Almost a century ago, massive political and demographic changes in the
Balkans swept the members of the crypto-Jewish sects known collectively as
the Dönme from their homeland in Salonica to Istanbul and other parts of
Anatolia. While appearing to be Muslim, in their private life the Dönme
held a set of syncretic beliefs based on Sufi Islam, Jewish mystical texts
such as the Kabbalah, and their own, unique traditions. In their last gasp
of group cultural autonomy, the Dönme buried their dead in often very
unique graves in different cemetaries throughout Istanbul. Most Dönme
tombs differed from traditional Muslim practice by featuring the portraits
of the deceased. Osman Hasan was a Dönme artist who created most of the
tombstoneportraits found in in these cemeteries. With a superior skill of
portraiture and a mixed media technique that combined photographs with
painting, he captured evocative portraits from the members of his community.

"Jak Kamhi’s memoir offers one a candid glimpse into the private life and
times of a man whose career and achievements have not just been limited to
the business world, but have likewise spanned the fields of public
diplomacy and international relations. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to
state that Jak Bey has been a key player in the shaping and implementation
of Turkish foreign policy and international relations throughout most of
the past half century. He has served, and continues to serve, as one of his
country’s foremost champions in the international arena. His contributions
to Turkish-American, Turkish-French, Turkish-EU and Turkish-Israeli
relations speak volumes for themselves.

To those who know him well, among whom I am honored to count myself, the
revelations contained in ‘What I’ve Seen, What I’ve Experienced’ will come
as no surprise. The portrait which emerges from their pages is one of a
loving son, husband and father, a successful innovator and entrepreneur in
the business world, a dedicated native son of Turkey who has given
generously of his time and fortune on behalf of the interests of his
beloved homeland."

The story that unfolds in his memoir is first and foremost a human
one. Marked
by highs and lows as all such human sagas, its resounding message is one of
dedication and perseverance. Indeed, as these memoirs were about to go to
press, Jak’s world (and those of all his family and friends) was shaken by
the tragic death of his firstborn son, Hayati. The day after the funeral
Jak Bey was in his Profilo office rewriting those sections of his memoir
referring to his son."

Back cover text:

The intense autobiography of a cosmopolitan Jew born in Istanbul at the
beginning of the 20th century, a time when people from all over the world
were converging upon the city, enticed by the allure and diversity of its
cultural milieu. The flavour and perfume of this vibrant metropolis
pervades the account of his lively youth during which he was educated at
local German and English schools.

He went on to travel throughout Europe during the 1920s settling in Vienna
and later in Italy. With the advent of World War II, Victor moved to London
and was engaged by the British Intelligence Corps, where his undercover
work took him back again to Istanbul and also to Cairo. The contrasts of
these years of espionage and his fulfilling familial life as an antiques
dealer in Milan are recounted in this engaging memoir in which the author’s
broad-minded and cultivated humanity radiates through every page.

*Back Cover*

The official line that successive Turkish regimes have frequently repeated
and which has firmly established itself in both Turkish and foreign public
opinion is that the Republic of Turkey is one of those rare countries in
which antisemitism has never taken root, and in which Jews have thus lived
for centuries within a tolerant atmosphere of peace and tranquility, but it
simply isn’t true. Along with antisemitism are the conspiracy theories in
which the “Jew” or the “Zionist” feature as the main actors that are widely
seen throughout Turkish society. In fact, this state of affairs is not
only pervasive but has even become “normal” to the point of banality, so
much so that it tends to draw no reaction from either the country’s
intellectuals or politicians. This book contains a collection of author’s
published articles on the subject—a subject that has received no serious
treatment in Turkey, and as such attempts to fill the gaping hole in our
knowledge of this widespread yet rarely discussed phenomenon and, as such,
stands as an indispensible source for those interested in Turkey and
antisemitism.
