[ha-Safran] The Kar-Ben Publishing AJL Conference Scholarship

I am delighted to announce that Esther Schnaidman is the 2024 Kar Ben
Publishing AJL Conference Scholarship recipient. The Kar-Ben Scholarship,
funded by Kar-Ben Publishing in honor of founders Judye Groner and Madeline
Wikler, awards a scholarship for AJL conference attendance to an AJL member
who demonstrates dedication to Jewish children’s literature and library
services.



Esther has spent over 20 years as the School Media Specialist and Librarian
at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey. In this position she has
increased the library collection, created a library curriculum, and brought
programs to the school. Additionally she has earned her school library
Advanced Accreditation from AJL. In the words of committee member Aviva
Rosenberg "She's doing things other schools and librarians aren't, she's
definitely going above and beyond". In addition to her work at her school,
Esther has helped facilitate roundtables for AJL, presented at conferences,
and is a consistent and thoughtful reviewer for *AJL News and Reviews*.

Fred,

Unfortunately no, the San Diego conference will not be recorded. Recording
in-person conferences is cost prohibitive. This is one of the reasons we've
switched to an online conference every other year.

Re: [ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

When I was at a Center library 10 years ago I got rid of all the VHS's.
People were just not using them, and most people even 10 years ago didn't
have a VHS player.

Currently I'm a public librarian and we do not have any VHS's, we have
plenty of DVDs that circulate and actually plenty of audio CDs that
circulate as well. I wouldn't get rid of those as quickly as the VHS's.

[ha-Safran] Mazel Tov!

Now that she's gone through most of her congratulatory emails in the past
two weeks, and will actually see this one, I would like to wish a hearty
mazel tov to my friend Susan Kusel on her Sydney Taylor book award winning
book The Passover Guest.

Susan is a past chair of the committee herself and an active member of AJL
and it is so exciting to see her peers recognize her work. I'm so excited
for her and to see that shiny gold seal on her book. Mazel Tov Susan!!

[ha-Safran] Name that title

Hi all,

I had a patron looking for a book that is supposedly fiction with the word
"faith" in the title. It's (again, supposedly) about a Jewish family in New
Jersey, and the daughter starts to take an interest in the Shabbos Goy, so
the dad sends her away.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

[ha-Safran] Openings on the Sydney Taylor Committee

Happy Monday all!

The Sydney Taylor Book Award committee has three open spaces coming up for
the 2022 and 2023 award years. Committee members chosen will serve from
January 2021 through the June 2023 AJL conference. Committee members will
read 120+ picture books, Middle Grade and YA of Jewish content and score
them. Committee members will also attend all AJL conferences during their
term, and all meetings called by the committee chair.

You do not need to be an AJL member to apply, however being a committee
member is contingent upon AJL membership.

Baltimore County Public Libraries offers Kanopy. Apparently (unsurprisingly) 
usage went WAY up  when the branches closed for COVID.

Kanopy is very expensive and it is probably better for the mainstream type of 
things.  I did not rely on it for Jewish/Israel Studies that much.  Our film 
studies faculty come from a multitude of departments, disciplines, and programs 
and use both documentaries and motion pictures.  We used to subscribe but had 
to cancel their services because of the cost. The decision to subscribe to it 
was not well-vetted in the first place.  When we canceled - it created a lot of 
issues with confusion, access, etc.

on library listservs.  We don't put the individual titles in the catalog,

Subject: [ha-Safran] Unwanted donations

What do people do with unwanted donations? I have a box of all-Hebrew (to the 
point where I can't even tell you what they are) books someone dropped outside 
the library door. No name. there is an 11 volume Hebrew dictionary (we have one 
on the shelf) but many of the others are a mystery.

Books that are donated that we already have or do not wish to add to our 
collection, I do put on a cart for free or donation. When those have been there 
a month or more, I move them to the local public library's sale cart, or the 
geniza if necessary, or the trash.

I've requested (and posted numerous signs) that people call or email first, and 
then bring the books, but that hasn't helped.

Applications being accepted through November 15th, 2019.

The Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee has multiple positions available for the 
upcoming year.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of Judaic 
children’s literature, experienced in writing critical reviews, willing and 
able to read and review over 120 books during the course of a year, and able to 
meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend the annual conference and committee 
meetings, and to participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking 
at the Committee’s annual presentation.  The term of membership on the 
Committee is two years.

Membership on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and 
intellectually challenging. It also requires a substantial commitment in terms 
of time and energy.

Members must be able to submit reviews electronically and correspond with the 
committee members through regular e-mail.  Familiarity with Google Docs is 
helpful but not required.

?Speaking as a public librarian I'm horrified what this woman said that. I know 
I've had my share of frustrations with patrons but it would never occur to me 
to say such a horrible thing to anyone. Your curt reply was totally warranted 
and she clearly has no value in good customer service.

It was lousy of her, but I do believe she is the aberration, not the norm. I've 
been using my local public library (LAPL/Westchester branch) extensively since 
my retirement, and the staff is always kind, welcoming, and friendly. So the 
hell with her - I'm glad you put her in her place :)

I was at the nearby public library and politely asked a librarian to help me 
print out a color attachment from an Email, which contained a forthcoming 
article I wrote for a journal.  I've been retired from our profession for quite 
a few years now, and admit my computer skills are not the best.  After she 
finished sending the article to a color printer, she said in a most 
condescending and haughty manner: "I guarantee you weren't paying attention to 
how I did this."  She was totally wrong, as I was paying very close attention, 
to her navigating the computer's prompts.  She wasn't expecting my curt reply: 
"I'm a retired library director, and I would have never talked to a patron like 
that."  It is no secret that that the people in our profession still have a 
less than positive image.  It is librarians such as the one I unfortunately 
encountered today who cause that to be the case.  If others on Hasafran want to 
comment about this, I would like to read their postings.
