[ha-Safran] Holocaust memoir

2012-08-20 Thread Riva Berleant
A memoir suited to the age group--and good for adults too (I enjoyed it)--
is Esther Hautzig's THE ENDLESS STEPPE. Esther at eleven, with
her family, was deported from Vilna to Siberia. as Nazis and
Red Army clashed. It is a story of
their survival despite the cold, the living conditions, and forced labor.
Best wishes

[ha-Safran] Judaica subject headings

2012-09-29 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues - I'be begun to organize a small synagogue library, about 1500
volumes. I've decided on Weine classification and will use
Librarything for cataloguing. I am now
exploring subject heading guides. I'd like any advice
based on experience. What do you use? How detailed need the subject
headings be? Is broad and basic better? Should I take them right
from LC records? Anything you can tell me is welcome.

Re: [ha-Safran] synagogue library budget question

2013-02-11 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues,
I have sad answers to some of the questions that have been on the list.
I run the library as a volunteer. I'm professionally qualified. I still pay my
synagogue dues. If I didn't do it, no one would. The budget is minimal. I
bring my own computer. We don't have the money to automate, so I am going
to use LibraryThing. Any more questions?
Meanwhile, I have one: How can I get more people to use the
library?
It's good to be part of the dedicated bunch.

[ha-Safran] LibraryThing query

2013-03-19 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues - I just spent a lot of time exploring the LibraryThing site.
I don't have any other choice for a catalog except making one by hand,
which is no longer a real choice. Before I click the button, perhaps
you can tell me what I can't find on the site:

1. Can I enter a Weine classification number?
2. Is there a place for an accession number?
3. Can I put in my own subject headings?

Is there anything you think I ought to know?

Thank you.

[ha-Safran] help with LibraryThing

2013-05-22 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues,
Once again I ask for your indispensable help with LibraryThing.
I am trying to decide how best to explain it to our potential
library users so that they will use it. I am also puzzled about
how the catalog becomes public and yet bars users from changing the
entries.
My computer automatically puts me into a cataloguing mode and
I can't seem to find out how an outsider accesses and uses the catalog.
Thanks in advance.

2. a recent, comprehensive book on antisemitism.

[ha-Safran] Belfer's After the Fire

2017-01-13 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues - I've just been ordering JCB award-winning books, one of which is
Lauren Belfer's
After the Fire. It has also gotten good reviews elsewhere. The story revolves
around the discovery
of an unknown Bach cantata in manuscript, with an antisemitic libretto.
In 2014 Yale U.P. published a book called Tainted Glory: Anti-Judaism in
Handel's Messiah, by
musicologist Michael Marissen (who isn't Jewish). Marissen also wrote a book on
anti-Judaism in
Bach's St. John Passion. So Belfer's premise is solid, even though
antisemitism and anti-Judaism
are not quite the same phenomenon.
But here's more that's interesting: Lauren Belfer and Michael Marissen are
wife and husband.
Both books are excellent and both are coming into our synagogue library.

Hello Colleagues.
Can anyone tell me how to change the information in my listing

Thank you.

[ha-Safran] US Jewish girlhood

2024-06-11 Thread Riva Berleant via Hasafran
Hello colleagues.
A reader who missed her own Jewish girlhood is looking for all kinds of
material on growing up a Jewish girl in the U.S. in the last half of the
twentieth century: Memoirs, novels, biographies, research works in history,
sociology, anthropology etc. are all welcome. Please send your suggestions
directly to me.
Thank you.
