Thank you everyone for a wonderful conference. What a terrific venue
NYC is and the accommodations at the Edison Hotel and conference rooms
at HUC were wonderful. Thank you to all of those who organized such a
great conference!

All the best, Rose

There are so many who worked so hard for months. I echo Joyce

It was wonderful to see everyone.

Hi Noreen and colleagues:

Thanks Noreen and colleagues for registering to come to Charleston SC

Marty’s Place is the new vegan restaurant/cafeteria at the College of
Charleston, Program of Jewish Studies.

This is approximately 1 ¼ miles from the Marriott Charleston on
Lockwood Drive, Charleston SC.

There are cabs available. The hotel has a shuttle service that will
take you downtown to the college.

Marty’s Place is a good option for Monday night when we are free to
eat wherever we want. If many of you would like this option, please
let them know in advance so they can be ready to accommodate you.
Also, remember that Monday night is “Movie Night” at the conference.
We are selecting a very good film and/or documentary so it would be
wonderful if you were to come back to the hotel to enjoy this activity.

Looking forward to seeing all of you, most of you, many of you!

Hi Shoshana,

I just registered for the convention. On Monday evening I would like

know it is not within walking distance of the hotel. How long of a cab

[ha-Safran] Princess of Dan novel for young adults and older

2016-03-29 Thread Rose Novil

Nechama Sarah Burgeman has written a fantastic novel, /The Princess
of Dan/ published by Menorah Books and available through Amazon.
Perfect for young adults and older, this story presents two parallel
generations, one in the present and one that lives after the time of
Messiah (Redemption). The premise of the book is to
prepare humanity's consciousness for entering into this next phase of
history.

Reviews: "/T//his is a doubly rich book -- rich with its sense of human
relationships in a scene of cultural change, and rich in Kabbalistic
teachings that give this story of believable people a visionary
dimension. It can be enthusiastically recommended to anyone interested
in spirituality, relations of women and men, and/or the dialogue between
Judaism and universalist culture/."

[ha-Safran] [IACRL] IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program deadline is Friday

2016-02-09 Thread Rose Novil

Please post--this might be of interest to librarians outside of the USA.

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [IACRL] IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program
deadline is Friday

Date: Mon, 8 Feb 2016 22:31:47 +
From: Edwards, Eric A
To: ia...@list.railslibraries.info

   All:

Do you know a promising young librarian from a developing country
who would be interested in a career-development opportunity here in
the U.S.? Encourage the person to apply for a spot in the Jay Jordan
IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program. Up to five
people are selected each year. The program lasts for four weeks and
is centered around OCLC’s headquarters, which is located in Dublin,
Ohio. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about issues
affecting librarianship on a global level, particularly library
operations and management, information technology, and global
cooperative librarianship. Activities will include meeting with
leaders in the field and touring a number of library organizations
(including OCLC) and cultural-heritage institutions. Participants
will also give presentations on issues affecting libraries in their
home countries and will devise practical solutions to the major
challenges currently facing libraries around the world. The
underlying goal of the program is for participants to be able to
take what they have learned and apply it to their own career growth
and to the issues facing libraries and librarianship in their own
   countries.

In addition to being from an eligible country, applicants must have
earned a degree in library and information science within the past
five years and have between three and eight years of professional
experience. For more information about the program, and to view a
video of this past year’s participants describing their experiences
   as Fellows, go to http://www.oclc.org/about/awards.en.html.

   Thank you.

Re: [ha-Safran] Is "Marrano" offensive

2015-10-13 Thread Rose Novil

Hi,
I believe that the current term being used is anusim. At our Sephardic
shul, the term Marrano is taken as offensive so we have been using
Anusim. Hope this is helpful. Rose

*Anusim*(Hebrew: אֲנוּסִים, pronounced [anuˈsim]; singular male, Anús,
Hebrew: אָנוּס pronounced [aˈnus]; singular female, Anusáh, Hebrew: אָנוּסָה
pronounced [anuˈsa], meaning "Coerced [converted Jews]") is a legal
category of Jews in halakha (Jewish law) who were forced to abandon
Judaism against their will, typically ...

I think "marrano" was actually adopted from Arabic into Castillian,
and in the latter referred to pigs and pork. Historically and
etymologically, at least, it's far from complementary. But now? I
don't know.

Off hand I think "Conversos" would be better since it's nominally less
charged, but the improvement is only in slight degrees and there might
be better terms. "Christian converts from Judaism" exists and it seems
to suffice in all but the particulars of time and place. Maybe
"Christian converts from Judaism $z Iberian Peninsula $y 16th
century"? It's awkward, but it hits the particulars without using one
of the more charged terms.

sufficiently offensive that it should be replaced in LCC and LCSH?

Dear fellow librarians,

I will be doing a book talk for the Sephardic Congregation in Chicago

Could you suggest some titles that you would recommend? Looking forward
to hearing the group wisdom.

[ha-Safran] Leo Baeck Insitute year books

2014-07-10 Thread Rose Novil

Hello,
At the Oakton Community College Library, we recently received a donation of
Leo Baeck Institute Year Books. There are 15 volumes (years to follow) of
the year book and there are also two separate volumes. One is titled
Liberty and Letters: the Thoughts of Leopold Zunz and the other is titled
Leopold and Adelheid Zunz: An account in Letters.
While these volumes are not right for our collection, we would really like to
find them a home.
Please contact Rose Novil ( rno...@oakton.edu) if your institution is
interested. Below are the specific yearbooks we have.

19571974 1982 1987
19581975 1983 1988
19591976 1985 1989
19601977 1986 1990

Thank You,

[ha-Safran] Translation sites

2012-07-16 Thread Rose Novil

Hi Everyone,

I hope that all of you are enjoying the summer and not all of you are
having the intense heat that we have had in Chicago! I am
collaborating with one of our computer technology faculty on a research
guide about the new Jewish Studies Concentration at Oakton Community
College beginning this fall.
http://www.oakton.edu/academics/special_programs/jewish_studies/index.php

We are interested in suggestions including web sites that offer
translations from Hebrew-English and English-Hebrew. We would be
interested in Yiddish-English and English-Yiddish. If you know of any
sites that offer phonetic and sound translations and/or actual live
voices speaking, that would be wonderful. We appreciate any of your
suggestions. Thanks so much, Rose
